LA county jailA website has been established to inform Class Members of their rights under a proposed $53 million L.A. jail strip search class action settlement.

If approved this settlement will end claims that the Los Angeles County Jail violated female inmates’ constitutional rights by conducting humiliating and degrading strip searches at the County Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, Calif.

Female inmates claimed that they were subjected to strip searches and body cavity inspections in groups with no individual privacy, and were subjected to demeaning language during these searches.

Under the terms of the proposed settlement deal, L.A. County will pay $53 million into a settlement fund. From that fund, named plaintiffs will receive $10,000 each, for a total of $90,000.

Up to $3 million will be used to help L.A. County develop better practices. The $3 million will fund contracts between the County of Los Angeles and the Moss Group and the Center for Gender and Justice “for the purpose of helping Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department develop gender-responsive and trauma-informed practices, programming, and services.”

Attorneys for Class Members have requested up to one third of the settlement fund, plus reimbursement for their legal fees.

The remaining amount, estimated just under $31 million, will be distributed among Class Members, based on the number of strip or visual body cavity searches each Class Member was subjected to.

Allegedly, the most invasive searches occurred before July 2011, so Class Members who were subjected to a strip search before that time may be eligible for more compensation.

Inmates who were subjected to strip searches at a temperature of 70 degrees or less may also be eligible for more compensation.

Per the terms of the proposed L.A. County strip search class action lawsuit, no Class Member will receive less than $200.

Additionally, the L.A. county class action settlement also notes that the minimum payment will only be applied if there are an unexpectedly high number of claims made.

The proposed settlement deal has not yet been approved. The Lynwood strip search class action settlement website notes that no judgement has been made on the claims brought forward, and L.A. County does not accept liability. The L.A. County strip search class action settlement deal has been made to avoid the costs and risks of continuing litigation.

The Lynwood strip search class action settlement states that a preliminary approval hearing has been set for Aug. 12, 2019. It goes on to note that if the settlement deal does receive preliminary approval, notices will be sent to Class Members and the website will be updated with details on how Class Members can participate in the settlement deal.

Those that believe that they are a Class Member can submit their information to be contacted by Class counsel. No Claim Form is available yet.

Class Members can also call 1-855-233-1237 or email info@LynwoodStripSearch.com for more information.

The inmates are represented by Barrett S. Litt and Lindsay Battles of Kaye McClane Bednarski & Litt, Donald Cook Attorney at Law, Colleen Flynn of the Law Office of Colleen Flynn, and Cynthia Anderson-Barker of the Law Offices of Cynthia Anderson-Barker.

The Lynwood Strip Search Class Action Lawsuit is Mary Amador, et al. v. Sheriff Leroy D. Baca, et al., Case No. 2:10-cv-01649-SVW-JEM, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

  7. Yvette Giordano says:

Has anyone gotten there check yet?

    1. Chankla says:

No no checks I heard that their is a time limit on these checks meaning that if we don’t claim or cash it or receive it then it goes back as in claimed money so if like 6 months or like 8 months we don’t receive our checks and no one does nothing about it like go to the original court where this was settled then all our checks now get void out and sent back to the pool of money for everyone but us and then when the time runs out their going to blame us saying we knew about the checks but did nothing about it so I don’t know about you but their is all ready two of us going to the court to find out what’s going on so I can just sit their and keep hoping and waiting or jump on the band wagon figure of speech and let’ meet at the court and do something about it not only that but what they paid us is wrong too so hear is my number 562 5138242 if u are tired of the lies and want what’s yours let’s go together we can all meet up their I don’t know about you but I had enough of their lies and by the way now their saying July it’s up to you

    2. Rose Deleon says:

    3. Rose Deleon says:

I’m still waiting ladies idk it’s definitely not right. I still have nightmares about those cops the way they treated us and yes I froze my ass off too 3am it’s crazy this happened several times. My mental health is gone downhill. I’m having such a hard time. No one should ever have to be subject the humiliation!!! my heart goes out to each and everyone of you ladies subject to the humiliation that we were subject to God bless you all

    4. Melissa Bryant says:

Last January around the end of the month I received the first of apparently 3 checks in the next 2 -3 years. I am still waiting for the 2023 check. Feels like a lot of waiting around for a settlement done and approved. Why is it taking so long when initially the contract stated that the checks would be issued by January of each year?!?’

  8. Chankla says:

Wow sit down for this one now they are saying December late December wow

  9. Chankla says:

Hear one for you now they are saying at the very end of April like the last day of April and get this then they say not for sure but maybe but maybe not they say their not sure when maybe 7 months from now wow their stroking us

    1. Mari says:

Yes we need to not waste any more time and take action NOW. I just saw they now posted late may 2023. I was looking thru court documents on their strip search site and one thing said the administrator, as in charge of the payments, had gotten extra money like a lot more than anyone of us by saying they needed more time in Nov 2021…and then 4,000$ each month that payments were delayed. It’s in the court documents. I’m not sure if they r still getting paid for being late or exactly what it meant…

      1. Mari says:

So how do we take action? Who do we contact? I wanna know who in the court system makes sure money is accounted for. It’s a huge settlement. And if the firm had that Washington state address do we contact someone in that state? If LA already made their payment for this year when did they make it? Let’s find out everything we can. I’m posting an email on here. skindarella@gmail.com cuz, ladies, those bitches better have our money.

      2. Shelly Sabo says:

Well that’s something we need to look into that cuz that means they owe us 1,200 to 1,600 per person as of today. I hope that’s true. And the IRS holding and having you come in person to verify your identity, were being put on hold there. So it would have been nice to get my CK in January like they said. I hope it true then be late more $ for all of us.

      3. Jr says:

Yes by law late payments are subject to penalty. I’m with this

      4. Toni says:

How do u file lawsuit on this

    2. Mari says:

    3. Tonnette Hernandez says:

I’m reading that some ladies received 3000 and 4000 on the first check
Why did I only get 89 dollars

      1. Shelly Sabo says:

Probably because they were arrested more than you or they went to court more times than you there are a lot of reasons

  10. Chankla says:

Still no checks tolled you and don’t plan on getting it
