Who is Conair Corp?

Conair Corp is a large brand selling a variety of small appliances and personal care products. In the 1960s, the brand put itself on the map when they manufactured the Conair pistol grip hair dryer. According to the company’s website, the Conair Yellowbird hair dryer “remains one of the most respected and recognized blow dryers in the industry.”

In addition to their iconic Conair hair dryer products, Conair Corp also owns various other subsidiaries such as Cuisinart, a kitchen small appliance brand which was acquired by Conair in 1989. “Today the revolution continues, with the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and technology delivering new and better products year after year,” the brand states. But not all products are perfect, according to recent claims.

Why is Your Hair Dryer Sparking?

In February 2018, one woman’s Facebook post went viral after she posted a video of her new hair dryer becoming a “blow torch” the first time she used it. “Talk about a bad hair day!” the woman wrote, noting that she got a small burn from the dryer.

Although this is a dramatic example of a hair dryer fire, the problem may be more common than consumers assume. This is why there are hair dryer safety standards.

How is Conair Responding to Reports of Defective Dryers?

Current complaints with the Infiniti Pro Hair Dryer Series 259Y are not the first. Conair has had issues before with their Infiniti Pro Hair Dryer Series.

In 2013, Conair hair dryers were recalled by Conair Corp. due to concerns that the dryers can spark and pose a burn or fire hazard. The recall was reportedly prompted by 19 consumer reports of sparks, including one report involving a fire and property damage and three reports of minor burn injuries resulting in medical attention.

According to Conair’s recall announcement, the heater coils found in the dryer’s barrel can create an electrical short if they come into contact with adjacent coils. This electrical short can reportedly lead to small, hot coils projecting out of the dryer.

Around 570,000 units of the Infiniti PRO by Conair Hair Dryer were included in the recall. Individuals who purchased the recalled products were encouraged to stop using the hair dryers and contact Conair for a free replacement.

Previous Conair Class Action Settlements

Although Conair Corp announced a recall of the sparking dryers, the company still faced legal action over the issue. A 2013 Conair hair dryer class action lawsuit was filed in August 2013, alleging that the Infiniti PRO hair dryer caught fire while the plaintiff was drying her hair. According to the claimant, she had only owned the product for 10 months before she was faced with this defect.

The Conair class action claimed that the hair dryer defect stemmed from defectively designed heating coils and electrical cords. The plaintiff alleged that these defects resulted in the hair dryers spontaneously bursting into flames with no warning. Although Conair did not admit any wrongdoing in 2013, the company agreed to settle the claims against them via legal settlement. Under the Conair class action lawsuit settlement, individuals who purchased the Infiniti PRO hair dryers were able to collect cash payments of $5.
