Chase Zelle glitch class action lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Ronald Stoll filed a class action lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase Bank and Early Warning Services LLC d/b/a Zellpay.com.
  • Why: Stoll claims Chase customers were deprived access to their funds on June 1 after being double debited for without limitation payments authorized by Zelle, due to a service malfunction with the peer-to-peer payment platform that he claims was caused by negligence.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in New York federal court.

Chase Bank customers were subjected to double debits of payments from their accounts on or about June 1 due to a service malfunction on the peer-to-peer payment network, Zelle Network at Chase, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Ronald Stoll claims Chase customers, in addition to being deprived access to funds that were rightfully theirs, were unable to obtain information about the true status of their account balances due to extended wait times.

Stoll argues Chase customers ultimately suffered “financial hardship, bounced checks, charges, general confusion and emotional and mental distress” on account of Chase and Zelle’s allegedly unlawful and negligent conduct.

“Defendant was aware that its customers depended upon the proper functioning of Zelle and regularly used Zelle for fundamental transactions, such as rent payments,” the Chase class action states.

Stoll wants to represent a nationwide class and New York subclass of Chase customers whose accounts were affected by the service malfunction involving Zelle on June 1, 2023.

Duplicate debits from Chase bank accounts reversed on or about June 2, says class action

Stoll argues that himself and other Chase customers began noticing on June 1 that without limitation payments they had authorized to be made on Zelle had been twice-debited from their Chase accounts.

“Upon information and belief, as a result of the Service Malfunction, numerous Chase customers began complaining of missing funds and unexpected negative balances,” the Chase class action states.

The duplicate debits from the Chase accounts were ultimately reversed on or about June 2, according to the Chase class action.

Stoll claims Chase and Zelle are guilty of breach of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, breach of contract, and negligence, and of violating New York General Business Law

Plaintiff is demanding a jury trial and requesting declaratory and injunctive relief along with an award of  actual, nominal, consequential, punitive, and treble damages for himself and all class members.

A separate class action lawsuit was filed against Chase and Zelle last month by a consumer arguing the companies failed to adequately protect and reimburse their customers from and after instances of Zelle fraud.

The plaintiff is represented by Peretz Bronstein of Bronstein, Gewirtz & Grossman, LLC.

The Chase Zelle glitch class action lawsuit is Stoll, et al. v. JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. D/B/A Chase Bank, et al., Case No. 1:23-cv-04149, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Chase charged me double payment of 1160.00 they said it was Zelle and that I would have to contact Zelle I wasn’t able to purchase anything and my bank out was overdraft and on negative -900.00. I couldn’t buy anything because of this issue .

  2. Philippe Saint says:

On April 5th I opened a second bank account with JPMorganChase with money that I had received from her friends and family members following my mother’s funeral. I already had an account since Fall of 2007. On April 7th, Chase locked both of my checking accounts. The following week I tried to resolve the matter by visiting 2 Chase locations and speaking with 8 phone representatives. On April 14th 2023, 2 weeks after my mother Burial, I visited the location where I had opened the second account. I was invited into a banker’s office where I sat waiting to gain back access to my accounts. After 2 hrs of wait, the bank manager told me they would not give me access to my accounts, I was arrested for refusing to leave unless Chase close both my bank accounts. More than 2 dozen police officers were present for my arrest. In the process Philadelphia PD shot me 3 times with a taser gun. I was jailed for 14 hrs and did not get medical assistance after asking for it 8 times. I was released without seeing a lawyer or a judge.

I subsequently had to visit the ER twice and still suffer from injuries from that day. Under pressure from my lawyer Chase released my funds 9 weeks later.

After 5 months of repeated court appearances and subpoenas to Chase and Philadelphia PD my charges of defiant trespassing were withdrawn. Chase still has not explained why my funds were locked and accounts suspended. I still don’t understand why I was tased or jailed in hypothermic conditions. I now suffer from permanent physical back injuries and trigeminal neuropathic pain for requesting to close my own accounts. I just want justice.
