Despite thousands of pending lawsuits against Bayer filed by plaintiffs who claim that the agricultural company’s glyphosate weed killer Roundup caused them to develop health problems including cancer, Bayer continues to deny that the product is dangerous to humans.
Bayer Launches Campaign to Defend Roundup
Bayer spokespeople have been speaking with reporters across the country as part of a company effort to defend the safety of its glyphosate weed killer products.
One physician associated with Bayer spoke about the results of previous lawsuits against the company that resulted in massive wins and payouts for victims of cancer allegedly caused by Roundup. Dr. S. Eliza Dunn claims that these juries sided with the plaintiffs because they felt badly for people with cancer, rather than due to the presented evidence. Dunn is Bayer’s medical sciences and outreach lead. According to her, “There’s nothing wrong with this product in terms of safety and causing cancer. We stand by this product because it is safe and effective and really critical to agriculture.”
Roundup was originally produced by Monsanto, which was purchased by Bayer for $52 billion in 2018. Since the purchase, Bayer’s share price has dropped by more than 40 percent due to the controversy over Roundup. In 2018, Bayer announced that the company was cutting approximately 10 percent of its workforce, or around 12,000 jobs worldwide.
In April 2019, Bayer’s chief executive Werner Baumann lost a shareholder confidence vote. The company has also lost multiple lawsuits filed by plaintiffs claiming that Bayer knew Roundup had the ability to cause cancer in people and suppressed this information from the public. More than 42,000 lawsuits are currently pending against the company by plaintiffs who claim they have been harmed by the weed killer.
Alleged Roundup and Glyphosate Dangers
Following research conducted by the World Health Organization in 2015, glyphosate has been classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” According to victims who have hired Roundup weed killer lawyers and won multi-million dollar lawsuits against Bayer, exposure to glyphosate may result in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a serious form of cancer. It is likely that glyphosate health side effects are caused by long-term exposure to the chemical weed killer, and it may take many years before these dangerous side effects are recognized and diagnosed.
Due to the suspected dangers of glyphosate and Roundup, many countries, states, and cities have banned the use of the chemical. France and Austria have banned most glyphosate products, and Germany has stated that the country will ban glyphosate by the end of 2023. Additionally, many U.S. cities including Miami and Seattle have banned the weed killer.
