Analysts are struggling to estimate the potential cost of pending lawsuits and possible settlements regarding allegations linking Bayer’s popular weedkiller Roundup to cancer.
Bayer May Lose Billions Over Roundup Cancer Allegations
Current estimates on the total cost to Bayer from cancer victim lawsuits and settlements regarding Roundup range from $2 to $20 billion. If Bayer wins the majority of the Roundup cases against the company, they may only need to pay out a small amount in settlements and legal fees.
However, due to the sheer number of pending lawsuits against the corporation, as well as the evidence linking Roundup to certain types of cancer, many experts believe this scenario to be unlikely.
There are currently approximately 11,000 pending cases against Bayer regarding Roundup cancer allegations. Additionally, since acquiring Monsanto in 2018, Bayer’s stock value has plummeted by approximately $38 billion.
According to some analysts, the average cost of settlement cases may come to around $500,000 apiece. This could mean a total payout from Bayer of around $6-7 billion. However, other analysts estimate the total cost to be much higher.
For instance, in one single case from May 2019, an Alameda County jury awarded a California couple $2 billion in damages for their Roundup-related cancer diagnoses. The married couple in their 60s and 70s claim that approximately 30 years of exposure to Roundup used for residential landscaping caused their diagnoses of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
According to CBS News, the jury in the Roundup lawsuit agreed and awarded each of them $1 billion, as well as an additional $55 million to the couple for their pain and suffering.
Roundup Cancer Allegations
According to the victims in many of the Bayer Roundup lawsuits, the popular weedkiller is to blame for their diagnoses of cancers including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide in the United States and possibly around the world.
Roundup and glyphosate have been used by commercial crop growers, farmers, home gardeners, landscapers, groundskeepers, and homeowners since the 1970s for the control of weeds and unwanted plants.
Although the Environmental Protection Agency claims that the chemical has not been proven to cause cancer in humans, public health advocates, environmental groups, and alleged victims claim that exposure to the chemical over years can lead to major health concerns.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that starts in white blood cells, has been associated with long term exposure to the weedkiller spray. In contrast to the EPA’s stance, in 2015 the World Health Organization officially classified glyphosate as being “probably carcinogenic” to humans, NBC News reports.
If you developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or another cancer after years of exposure to Roundup weed killing spray or other glyphosate-based weed killers, you may be eligible to hire a qualified attorney and file a class action lawsuit to pursue compensation and accountability.
Victims who file lawsuits against Bayer concerning Roundup may be able to collect millions of dollars in damages for their injuries, medical expenses, and pain and suffering.
If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Roundup as a farm worker or home gardener, you may have a legal claim. Legal migrant farm workers may also seek help. Learn more by filling out the form on this page for a FREE case evaluation.
