Neutrogena sunscreen cancer lawsuit overview:

  • Who: Kathy McCathie filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson.
  • Why: McCathie claims Johnson & Johnson manufactured and sold Neutrogena sunscreen that caused her to develop cancer because the product is contaminated with benzene, a known human carcinogen.
  • Where: The lawsuit was filed in Georgia state court.

Johnson & Johnson manufactured and sold Neutrogena sunscreen contaminated with unsafe levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene, causing a woman in Georgia to develop cancer, a new lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Kathy McCathie claims she developed cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma, after using Neutrogena sunscreen products that she says she didn’t know were contaminated with benzene

McCathie argues she was “unable to reasonably limit her exposure” to benzene since the presence of the “dangerous chemical” in the Neutrogena products was not disclosed to her.

“Defendants had the duty to ensure their products’ safety, and in turn owed Plaintiff a duty not to cause an unreasonable risk of injury,” the Neutrogena sunscreen cancer lawsuit states.

Johnson & Johnson recalls Neutrogena sunscreen products over benzene contamination

Johnson & Johnson issued a recall in July 2021 for a number of its Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreen products after testing by Valisure, an independent analytical pharmacy, determined they contained unsafe levels of benzene, according to the Neutrogena sunscreen cancer lawsuit.

Instead of disclosing the benzene contamination, Johnson & Johnson allegedly “provided consumers with false and misleading information about their products’ safety and efficacy despite their knowledge of the dangers,” the lawsuit states.

McCathie claims Johnson & Johnson marketed the Neutrogena sunscreen product as a way to protect against melanoma, calling this a “negative propaganda campaign” that actually “created a greater risk of cancer among the products’ users.”

She accuses Neutrogena of negligence and misrepresentation, among other things, demands a jury trial and requests an award of compensatory and punitive damages.

In related news, a pair of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against Neutrogena in December, arguing the company sold skin firming cream containing the cancer-causing chemical benzophenone

  1. Vicki Hammond says:

I had a spot appear in sept/Oct of 2019. Had a car accident years earlier and thought it to have become irritated due to that accident. Went to see a dermatologist and was told it was BCC. I used Neutrogena sunscreen for years to protect from from just the thing I now have. I was diagnosed with locally advanced basal cell carcinoma and now have paranasal tumors and tumors that will travel to my brain and cause death. My cancer is “uncurable and inoperable” as told to me by 2 oncologist. It sad to me that J&J knew of the cancer causing ingredients in their sunscreen and chose to do nothing about it. I have never been told Neutrogena caused my BCC but after much research I have concluded it more than likely is the case. Thanks Johnson & Johnson

I just don’t want to use sunscreen that has a cancer causing agent in it. Sign me up for class action against Nuetrogina! By the way, I’m really sorry that happened to the users of nuetrogina sunscreen. I have purchased 4 bottles of it in the last couple years and don’t even like it.

I was diagnosed with acute myleiod leukemia in April 2020 at 29 yrs old. Healthy & zero family history of cancer. I live in South Florida, beach, boat & pool on the weekends. I religiously sprayed sunscreen on my body throughout the day to prevent melanoma. I did almost a year worth of chemo & also received a stem cell transplant. I would love to be represented by a law firm after what I went through.
