A brand of 100% organic tampons are unraveling inside users’ bodies, causing some to have to seek medical attention to get bits of cotton removed, a new nationwide class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Kimberley Manson filed the class action complaint against company ALYK Inc. in a New York federal court last Wednesday, alleging the company’s LOLA tampons don’t have a protective coating to stop them from shedding inside consumers, Law360 reports.

She alleges the issue has affected dozens of consumers at least, with the complaint including examples of 30 reviews pulled from the company’s website detailing how the tampons have fallen apart inside people.

Manson says the issue can lead to vaginal infections, irritation and injury, and she is looking to represent a nationwide Class of consumers who have used the tampons, plus a New York Subclass.

She’s seeking not only damages for affected customers, but also a recall of the tampons.

“The defect is a nuisance that no reasonable consumer would expect to incur when using a tampon,” the class action lawsuit reportedly says.  “Moreover, it is an unacceptable safety hazard requiring a prompt recall.”

Mason says she bought the LOLA tampons from Walmart in February. When she was removing one of the tampons, she says it disintegrated and unraveled, leaving behind pieces of cotton inside her and causing “burning sensations”.

She says LOLA has been made aware of the faulty tampon design, but hasn’t done anything about it. Reviews included in the class action complaint includes examples of women having to seek medical assistance to get the tampon pieces out of their vaginas.

Despite the LOLA tampons purporting to be “gynecologist-approved,” Mason says the products are not safe and she would not have bought them had she known they would disintegrate inside her.

The alleged defect affects all LOLA sanitary products, Mason alleges, because all of the tampons lack a protective outer coating.

She’s suing for violations of New York General Business Law, breach of warranty, fraud, unjust enrichment and negligent misrepresentation.

Class action lawsuits against tampon manufacturers can sometimes end in payments to consumers. Last year, a $7 million class action settlement was announced that ended allegations that U by Kotex tampons could unravel or come apart when inserted into women’s bodies.

  1. Alyssa L says:

I have a complex cyst on my ovary and endometrial hyperplasia. I bleed for over a month sometimes 2 months. I purchased these tampons because they are “organic” and they have unraveled several times as I attempt to pull them out. At first I thought I wasn’t going to be able to get it out and I panicked! I also thought, “oh maybe it’s because it wasn’t saturated enough?” But no. It would happen even when I would bleed through the tampon. I kept using them because I didn’t want to keep using non organic tampons and those were the only ones I could find that were “organic”. Come to find out they aren’t 100% organic and multiple people are having the same issue with them falling apart while inside! I have receipts of the hundreds of dollars I have spent. I go through 4-5 boxes of tampons for 1 period. I don’t use pads because the amount that I bleed is insane and I don’t want to sit in it while at work and at home. I hope they fix this problem asap!

  2. Jennifer Mckinnish says:

This has happened to me as well it was not only painful to remove but invoked fear that I could not get it out . I now wear pads

  3. Jessica says:

Wow, I see alot of people had the same issue. The tampons I used since I started my period were discontinued so I had to start shopping around. I tried lola, the super plus and super hurt me for some reason, so I tried a regular and when I went to pull it out, it unraveled inside of me. I have cotton bits inside of me, its painful and has a burning type sensation. You can definitely add me to this lawsuit. Women should have products they feel comfortable with and don’t have to worry about getting infections. This is so unacceptable. As long as I have had my period, this has never happened to me again. Cheap products for an expensive price for something women need.

  4. Jay says:

Please, add me. This has happened to me, too.

  5. Tracie Fullington says:

    Pease add me to this

  6. Lucia Silva says:

I switched to this brand a month ago. For the past month I have been experiencing vaginal discomfort. I am unable to have sex with husband comfortably and I had my period twice this month.

  7. Kristen Wonder says:

I had to go to the ER to get a Lola tampon out that got stuck in my cervix because the string had come off inside of me.

I spent hours at home trying to get it out with the help of an advice nurse and when I couldn’t, spent 4 hours in the ER waiting for an incredibly embarrassing procedure to remove it.

I’ve used a reusable period cup since.

    1. Tracie says:

I don’t blame you for using the period cup they are more safer to use than tampons i think i love period cups

  8. Tina says:

I have had irregular period and pain in ovaries after using these tampons

  9. Taylor Jacobs says:

Tampons fall apart inside me and leave little pieces impossible to get out. I’ve been having UTI/BV/yeast infection like symptoms since I started using them.

  10. Morgan P says:

These tampons caused damage to my reproductive system . It caused so much damage I just had a very bad ectopic pregnancy emergency surgery 2 days ago!!!
