A Texas woman recently filed a Roundup cancer lawsuit against agricultural giant Monsanto, alleging that its Roundup product led to her diagnosis with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
The plaintiff, Carolyn D., began using Roundup decades ago, and has continued to use it on a regular basis. Roundup products came with safety and precautionary warning labels, and Carolyn followed these instructions for her decades-long usage of the weedkiller.
Unfortunately, Carolyn was eventually diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Carolyn filed this Roundup cancer lawsuit to allege that her CLL was directly caused by her long-term exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup products.
The Roundup cancer lawsuit claims that the injuries Carolyn suffered after being exposed to Roundup were avoidable, but she and thousands of others like her have suffered due to actions and inactions by Monsanto.
This Roundup cancer lawsuit and others like it claim that Monsanto has long misrepresented Roundup as safe. Certain common taglines in Roundup advertisements included “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic” to animals, the Roundup cancer lawsuit claims. Carolyn alleges these safety claims are simply not true. The New York Attorney General actually filed a lawsuit against Monsanto for these kinds of statements, claiming they deceived customers about the actual safety of the product.
The Roundup cancer lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, design defect, failure to warn, and breach of implied warranties.
Roundup Cancer Basics
Monsanto’s popular weedkiller Roundup has been linked with a number of types of Roundup cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Farm workers and even home gardeners are among the most at risk of any Roundup side effects. A number of farm workers and home gardeners have filed lawsuits against Monsanto with allegations of Roundup cancer, claiming that they were diagnosed with one of several kinds of cancer after using Roundup.
According to plaintiffs in these actions, studies published in the U.S., Canada, and Sweden have indicated a Roundup cancer link since as far back as 2001. The Environmental Protection Agency had even begun to suspect a Roundup cancer connection since the 1980s. Plus, a recent report published in March 2015 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) conclude that glyphosate is linked with cancer. Glyphosate is known as the active ingredient in Roundup.
Types of Roundup Cancer
Types of Roundup cancer that have so far been linked with the weedkiller include the following:
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Other Cancers
Other side effects include skin tumors, pancreatic islet cell tumors, chromosomal damage, and DNA damage.
