hodgkins lymphomaPlaintiff Judith J. has filed a Monsanto lawsuit in Arizona federal court against the makers of Roundup, claiming that she allegedly acquired non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma because of Roundup exposure.

According to the Monsanto lawsuit, Judith, now a resident of Phoenix, Ariz., was exposed to Roundup in Illinois between 1985 and 1997, and again in Arizona between 2000 and 2017.

According to her Monsanto lawsuit, she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in September 2003.

The Monsanto Company, manufacturers of Roundup, are headquartered in St. Louis, Mo. According to their website, they are a “global modern agriculture company” who “develop products and tools to help farmers around the world grow crops while using energy, water, and land more efficiently.”

Roundup and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Facts

According to the Monsanto lawsuit, the plaintiff claims that the active ingredient, glyphosate, is what had caused her to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The American Cancer Society says non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer that begins with lymphocytes, or the body’s the white blood cells that are a part of the immune system.

According to the Extension Toxicology Network, they state that glyphosate is “a broad spectrum, non-selective systemic herbicide. It is useful on essentially all annual and perennial plants including grasses, sedges, broad-leaved weeds and wood plants.”

However, a study stated by the Network had compared the effects of Glyphosate and Roundup in fish. According to the study, they had found that glyphosate was non-toxic to fish, but “Roundup was more toxic to fish that was glyphosate” alone.

According to the Monsanto lawsuit, moreover, they allege that glyphosate is linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. They cite a report by the IARC (the International Agency for Research on Cancer, an agency of the World Health Organization) that revealed concerns about multiple herbicides, including glyphosate.

According to the Monsanto lawsuit, the IARC working group announced glyphosate as a Group 2A herbicide, meaning that it is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Additionally, Judith’s Monsanto lawsuit maintains that, “The IARC Working Group concluded that the cancers most associated with glyphosate exposure are non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other haematopoietic cancers, including lymphocytic lymphoma/chronic lymphocytic leukemia, B-cell lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.”

The Monsanto lawsuit maintains that the company continued to represent the product as safe to the environment and to humans. According to the Monsanto lawsuit, they contend that the company still marketed glyphosate-based herbicides and had continued to claim that its products, including Roundup, “create no unreasonable risks to human health or to the environment.”

According to the Monsanto lawsuit, it is unfair and misleading to continue having the Monsanto company represent Roundup as a safe product for use. The plaintiff asks of Monsanto to stop representing the Roundup product as safe.

The Monsanto Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-02421-DMF, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.
