Roundup Monsanto cancer woman gardeningA Louisiana woman recently filed a lawsuit against Monsanto, alleging the developed lymphoma from Roundup use over several decades.

The plaintiff, Shirley H., says she used the popular weedkiller Roundup for home landscaping from around 1980 to 2017, and was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in June 2014. It wasn’t until Shirley became aware of the risk of lymphoma from Roundup use after the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s evaluation of glyphosate was published in 2015 that she learned of the possibility that her lymphoma was caused by her Roundup use.

She decided to file a lawsuit against Monsanto, claiming that the company knew but failed to warn the public about the risks of lymphoma from Roundup use. The lawsuit further claims that Monsanto went so far as to actively conceal the link between Roundup and B-cell lymphoma and the risk this link poses to patients.

Shirley filed this lymphoma from Roundup lawsuit on multiple counts, including design defect, failure to warn, negligence, and breach of express and implied warranties.

This lawsuit, along with countless others like it, alleges that Monsanto has continued to misrepresent the use of Roundup as safe, despite knowing of the link between Roundup and a number of cancers, including lymphoma. Indeed, Monsanto has used the taglines “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic” to describe its product, when the actual risk is much greater. The New York Attorney General actually filed a lawsuit against Monsanto for making these kinds of statements, claiming they deceived customers about the actual safety of the product.

Background of Roundup Cancer

Monsanto’s popular weedkiller Roundup has been linked with a number of types of Roundup cancer, including B-cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL).

Farm workers and even home gardeners like Shirley are among the most at risk of any Roundup side effects, given the common use of the product in these capacities. A number of farm workers and home gardeners have filed lawsuits against Monsanto with allegations of Roundup cancer, claiming that they were diagnosed with one of several kinds of cancer after using Roundup.

The Environmental Protection Agency began to suspect a Roundup cancer connection since the 1980s.  The report that tipped Shirley off to the risk of lymphoma from Roundup use was published in March 2015 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), concluding that glyphosate is linked with cancer. Glyphosate is known as the active ingredient in Roundup.

Cancers Linked with Roundup Use

Types of Roundup cancer that have so far been linked with the weedkiller include the following:

  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • Multiple Myeloma
  • B-cell Lymphoma
  • Bone Cancer
  • Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
  • Other Cancers
