A Michigan woman recently filed a hernia mesh removal lawsuit against Atrium, alleging her mesh implant caused serious complications, including infection and hernia mesh removal.
The plaintiff, Debra B., was implanted with a hernia mesh device on Dec. 3, 2013, to help repair a hernia she had suffered. Unfortunately, Debra soon began experiencing serious side effects, which she alleges were a direct result of the hernia mesh device being defective. She says she began experiencing pain in the area of the hernia mesh, and an infection was discovered.
These side effects forced her to undergo hernia mesh removal to get rid of the device and alleviate the symptoms.
The hernia mesh removal occurred on April 6, 2014, around four months after the initial implantation of the device. The specific device used was the Atrium C-Qur TacShield.
Debra filed her hernia mesh removal lawsuit on Jan. 8, 2018, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire. The lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, design and manufacturing defect, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, constructive fraud, and negligent infliction of emotional distress, among others.
Debra and many others in a similar situation have turned to litigation over these complications, which may in some cases cause long-lasting or permanent injuries. Pursuing a hernia mesh side effects lawsuit could offer a method of gaining compensation for the pain and suffering caused by these complications.
Basics of Hernia Mesh
Hernia mesh is a device used to reinforce a weak area or patch a hole caused by a hernia. The specific device involved in this lawsuit is an Atrium C-Qur TacShield. Atrium C-Qur devices are a popular option for hernia repair. Though these devices are undoubtedly popular, a growing number of patients who have been implanted with hernia mesh are reporting serious side effects associated with their implants. Many are forced to undergo hernia mesh removal to alleviate complications.
Hernia Mesh Complications
Side effects linked to a hernia mesh device include:
- Chronic pain
- Hernia recurrence
- Rejection of the mesh
- Infection
- Device migration
- Scarring
- Inflammation
- Organ adhesion
- Erosion
- Tissue and nerve damage
- Death
Hernia mesh side effects like device migration can lead to more dangerous problems like infection, adhesion, and device failure. Some side effects have required patients to undergo hernia mesh removal in revision surgery. Of course, any additional surgery will add the further risk of infection and other complications, as well as additional medical expenses.
For some, symptoms may not appear up to several years after their hernia mesh was implanted.
Filing a Hernia Mesh Lawsuit
If you or someone you love has suffered from hernia mesh side effects after undergoing hernia repair, even months or years after the fact, you may be able to file a hernia mesh lawsuit. While filing a hernia mesh lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by these side effects, it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.
