Monsanto Company is facing a new product liability claim from an Alabama woman, alleging that due to regular use of Roundup weedkiller, she developed non Hodgkin’s lymphoma while the company failed to warn her that the product was potentially carcinogenic.
Plaintiff Debra M. opted to file the Roundup lawsuit after discovering the main ingredient of the weedkiller may induce cancer. Debra claims she was diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to Roundup in 2016, alleging she had used Roundup on a regular basis beginning in 1990.
Debra says she continued using Roundup until 2017, when she discovered that glyphosate could have contributed to her cancer development.
According to her Roundup lawsuit, Debra used the weedkiller on a regular basis for typical purposes. During each of those sessions, Debra followed all safety instructions and had no reasons to be wary of potential non Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to Roundup. The product label allegedly does not contain any language indicating risk for cancer development, nor did the company disclose this information, she claims.
Overview of Roundup Cancer Correlation
Monsanto Company has been marketing Roundup since its release in the 1970s, selling it to primarily farmers, gardeners, and agricultural companies trying to keep their yards free of weeds. The main ingredient glyphosate, which is a broad spectrum herbicide, specifically targets and kills weeds and grasses that interfere with the crops’ growth.
Glyphosate does this by targeting organisms with the 5-enolpyruvylshikimic acid-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase enzyme, inhibiting it and ultimately causing the weed to die.
Roundup is a highly popular product, with approximately 250 million pounds used every year across the United states on commercial properties. However, the popularity of this product has allegedly resulted in numerous cases of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to Roundup along with other cancers including but not limited to:
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Skin Tumors
- Pancreatic Islet Cell Tumors
- Chromosomal Damage
- DNA Damage
- Other Cancers
Glyphosate and several other pesticides were classified as probable carcinogens in a report released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in March 2015. The report was released after researchers analyzed the results of three different studies from three different studies, each finding a correlation of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to Roundup.
Researchers began investigating the link between glyphosate and cancer after noticing a number of farmers had developed non Hodgkin’s lymphoma after being exposed. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had suspected a correlation in the 1980s, with the Monsanto Company being allegedly aware of the investigation.
Since her diagnosis, Debra says she has had to contend with her disease and the life altering changes it came with. Debra is filing this Roundup lawsuit against Monsanto Company alleging the company either knew or should have known about their product’s carcinogenic properties.
Debra states she would not have used the popular weedkiller if she had known about the risk of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to Roundup.
