Walmart lawsuits overview:

  • Who: A trio of lawsuits have recently been filed against Walmart.
  • Why: Allegations against Walmart revolve around fraudulent money transfers, defective touchscreen tablet devices and discrimination against shoppers.
  • Where: Nationwide.

Complaints have recently been launched against Walmart over claims revolving around fraudulent money transfers, defective touchscreen tablet devices and discrimination against shoppers.

The lawsuits were preceded by an agreement between Walmart and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) that allowed the agency to secure nearly $4 million in remission from an alleged Walmart gift card scam.

Walmart responsible for fraudulent money transfers made using its services, class action alleges

A class action lawsuit was filed against Walmart earlier this month by a consumer arguing the company bears responsibility for fraudulent money transfers that occurred within its retail store locations.

The consumer argues Walmart has policies in place that make it easier for fraud to occur during its money transfer process, including by failing to deny payouts to individuals who are suspected of committing fraud.

Walmart is accused of being “well aware” that a number of popular scams — including lottery scams and other mass-marketing fraud — induce individuals to use Walmart’s money transfer services to send money to both domestic and international fraud rings.

“Walmart has continued processing fraud-induced money transfers at its stores — funding telemarketing and other scams — without adopting policies and practices that effectively detect and prevent these transfers,” the Walmart class action states.

Walmart allegedly sold defective 2019-2021 model Onn Surf and Pro tablets

A class action lawsuit was filed against Walmart last month by a consumer arguing the company sold 2019-2021 model Onn Surf and Pro tablets that are allegedly prone to cracking and/or breaking under a normal amount of pressure

Walmart is accused of being aware of the alleged defect with the Onn Surf and Pro tablets, but ultimately failing to remedy the issue and refusing to repair the devices free of charge.

“As a result of Walmart’s unfair, deceptive and fraudulent business practices, owners of the class devices, including Plaintiff, have suffered an ascertainable loss of money, property and/or value,” the Walmart class action argues.

Walmart accused of using asset protection procedures to single out customers based on race

A lawsuit was filed against Walmart earlier this month by a consumer arguing the company’s asset protection policies and procedures are designed to single out and discriminate against shoppers based on their race.

The consumer claims Walmart’s asset protection procedures are “disproportionately applied” to “African Americans versus similarly situated white shoppers,” arguing they were discriminated against based on their race.

Walmart is accused of detaining the consumer, an African American woman named Marshae Jackson, while she was attempting to purchase items using the store’s self-checkout services.

“Since the incident … coupled with the court appearances, Marshae Jackson suffered from great mental and physical stress, and continues to suffer today,” the Walmart lawsuit states.

DOJ secures nearly $4 million for remission program to refund consumers defrauded by Walmart gift card scams

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) was able to secure nearly $4 million in remissions from Walmart in April that the company agreed to pay as a result of a gift card scam

The Walmart remission program will compensate consumers who purchased a Walmart gift card between April 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017.

Starting in 2015, consumers were induced by fraudsters — who could be posing as loved ones in trouble or a legitimate company or government agency — to purchase Walmart gift cards ranging in value from $500 to $1,000.

Walmart froze balances of gift cards suspected to have been part of the fraudulent scheme in 2016 and 2017, funds the DOJ had been seeking in order to refund consumers.

Quick note. I worked for Walmart about 10 years and to end my career with this awful company, I experienced gaslighting, harassed, personal favoritism and discriminated against was in the picture. I was a major asset for the company working with a title of customer service associate, however I worked all over the store when needed. Prior to my leaving, the store manager was being transferred and with my leaving the store the numbers for the success of that store plummeted making it look like the manager leaving, was the reason for the decline in sales and she was a super manager when she was at that store. One particular employee worked with her causing me to leave due to demoralization. She’s been noted to have done this to other employees at other stores. Bottom line, employees in general, are mistreated horrifically at this company. I wish they could pay for my mistreatment that to this day still affects me considerably. I have been away from the company about 3 or 4 years. Trying to forgive but can’t. Just venting mostly but I’m sure there have been other attempts for lawsuits from other people however its hard to prove. As I mentioned before there is one employee still there that was forced to gaslight me and much more.

It was so embarrassing and it was so unnecessary and I could do something about it I would

Yes I was totally harassed by Walmart employees. I was stoped on my way out. They took my picture even though I refused to. I won’t ever shop there again! They treated me like a criminal. I payed for all my items. Showed them receipt. I know I was totally profiled based on my race.

  4. Leanna Burgan says:

I was discriminated against by a bunch of 19 year old emo girls who worked there. I never stole from there but harrashed me from the min I pulled in the parking lot.
