Audi, VW class action lawsuit overview:
- Who: Plaintiff Julie Kimball has filed a class action lawsuit against Volkswagen and Audi.
- Why: The Volkswagen and Audi class action lawsuit alleges the automakers concealed a turbocharger defect in some of their vehicles.
- Where: The lawsuit was filed in New Jersey federal court.
Audi and Volkswagen concealed a turbocharger defect in some of their vehicles, according to a class action lawsuit filed June 21 in New Jersey federal court.
Plaintiff Julie Kimball says she leased a 2010 Audi A4 in 2009 and purchased the vehicle when the lease expired. In 2019, her Audi allegedly experienced the turbocharger defect. She says she paid about $3,000 to diagnose the issue and replace the turbocharger.
Turbocharger defect manifests after warranty expires, VW, Audi class action lawsuit says
The Audi and VW class action lawsuit alleges the turbocharger defect affects the following Volkswagen and Audi 1.8L and 2.0L vehicles:
- 2012-2014 VW Beetles
- 2009-2012 VW CC
- 2009-2012 VW Eos
- 2008-2012 VW GTI
- 2008-2014 VW Jetta
- 2008-2010 VW Passat
- 2009-2014 VW Tiguan
- 2008-2012 Audi A3
- 2009-2013 Audi A4
- 2009-2013 Audi A5
- 2012 Audi A6
- 2009-2012 Audi TT
- 2011-2012 Audi Q5
The engines in these vehicles reportedly have an exhaust gas turbocharger with a vacuum-operated internal wastegate that harnesses the exhaust gases to spin an axial turbine and compressor, supplying pre-compressed air to the engine cylinders for combustion when fuel is injected.
“When functioning properly, the class engine turbocharger increases torque and horsepower of class engines on demand,” the Audi class action lawsuit says.
However, the exhaust manifold and turbine side of the turbochargers allegedly create vibrations that can prematurely wear out the wastegate, causing it to become nonfunctional.
The VW turbocharger defect manifests shortly after the limited powertrain warranties expire, the Audi and VW class action lawsuit asserts.
VW, Audi class action lawsuit says automakers knew of turbocharger defect but concealed from consumers
Kimball says Audi and VW were aware of the turbocharger defect based on pre-production testing, design failure mode analysis, consumer complaints, warranty and replacement data from dealerships and other information available to the automakers. Despite this knowledge, they allegedly concealed the turbocharger defect from consumers.
In 2017, Volkswagen and Audi faced allegations that they concealed an engine defect that caused engine failure and required owners to pay hundreds of dollars to fix.

Hey there and i do have VW Jetta and it got issues in the transmission and everything! How to take an action over this settlement!
Please help me the Audi dealership has my q5 right now and r not helping to fix issues just keep sending repair bills for issues!!!
My 2011 A5 has significantly lost power when I step on the gas. It hesitates before it takes off. It sounds like a problem with the Turbo to me so I’d like to be included in this suit. I bought the car because it has such good pick up and go it made me feel safe driving. It is a low miles vehicle for the year with only 62,000 miles on it. I’ve just discovered I have the failed piston rings that were previously involved in a class action suit and I’m trying to decide whether I fix the car or trash it. The piston rings and the water pump which were both defects that I now have to fix and both had settled suits. Also, related spark plugs that got trashed by the leaking oil from piston rings is going to cost with all the other problems > 9K to fix after I negotiated with the dealer. Now I see that the car also was involved in a Timing Chain and a Transmission class action suit that settled already so I’m not sure its worth fixing this car. I’m interested in any and all suits related to this car to recoup some of my investment in it.
I have a 2012 VW Eos that is consuming high amounts of oil. It had zero oil in just 3000 miles after an oil change. The VW dealer said it’s normal (according to VW) to use a quart in 1000 miles, but my regular mechanic said VW knows about this engine manfunction and that the only real solution is to replace the engine, at a cost of almost $10,000! I’d like to know if this is related, because there are a lot of people complaining about this issue online. I’d like to know how to become a part of this lawsuit

I have a 2014 Audi A4 ( that supposedly) is not on the list but is currently in for timing correlation and the turbo. Hard to believe it to be a coincidence here!!!
Recently took the car out for a car event. I was on the freeway trying to get to 60mph and as soon as I hit 60 my car start’s shaking making a horrible rattling noise including going on Limp mode. The EPC, Traction and CEL all turned on. Pulled over immediately so now im wondering if I qualify for this because I barely drive the car. Going to have the motor checked in a couple days.
Car is a 2013 Jetta GLI. With a little under 75k miles on it.
Same thing happened to mine 2008 Audi a4
I would love to join this Class Action Lawsuit regarding the failing turbos. Had the same issue on a 2013 Tiguan, in which the turbo failed due to a “Faulty Wastegate” at ~75k miles. I was quoted $4,200 to repair the issue and refused “relief/goodwill” refunds, though the issue seems to be known as a common one. I kept chat transcripts, quotes, and all receipts.

I have a 2013 Audi A6. 2 days ago my MIL light came on out of the blue while I was driving home from work and I noticed my car would shake while idle. I made an appointment the next day to take it to Audi. I asked my dad to drive it for me and he followed me to Audi. When we got there he mentioned that he could tell it was loosing power coming down the road and at the last red light it could hardly take off once the light turned green. I got the call today that it needs a new engine and turbocharger $16,000
Just experienced the same thing with our 2013 Audi. Perfectly fine one day, then rough idle and lose of power. Now we’re being told we need a new engine.
2014 vw Jetta with the 1.8t. EPC light and idle issues all the time. Scared the car is going to give out at any moment but I can’t put any more money into it. I’ve been to several Different mechanics to diagnose the problem but no one seems to have a concrete answer. Owning this car has been hell.
