Skechers Shape-Ups Class Action
By Sarah Pierce

Sketchers Shape-upsYou’ve seen the commercials for Skechers “Shape-ups” shoes, where people such as former NFL quarterback Joe Montana claim wearing the rocker-bottom shoes gets them in shape “without setting foot in a gym.” But are these shoes really all they’re cracked up to be? Not according to a federal class action lawsuit, which claims that not only does Skechers falsely advertise the health benefits of its Shape-Ups shoes, but that the shoes can actually cause injury.

Skechers claims in its advertisements that wearing Shape-Ups can result in noticeable physiological improvements, including weight loss, firmer and stronger muscles, reduced cellulite, improved circulation, and improved posture. These claims, Skechers says, are based on results shown in four clinical studies. According to the class action lawsuit, however, these claims are false.

“Shape-ups provide no health benefit to users beyond what any other ordinary sneaker provides. Worse, Shape-ups have actually injured some consumers,” the lawsuit says. “[Skechers’] false and misleading advertising campaign has allowed it to reap millions of dollars of profit at the expense of the consumers it has mislead.”

The lawsuit alleges the four clinical studies Skechers uses as evidence of Shape-ups’ health benefits are “medically, statistically and scientifically unsound,” and that they are “nothing more than marketing tools.” Studies on Shape-ups and similarly designed rocker-bottom shoes performed by objective third parties have found these types of shoes do not have the benefits that Skechers claims.

“Not only do Shape-ups not provide the benefits as claimed, they have significant drawbacks which Skechers has omitted from its advertising.” The class action lawsuit cites several doctors’ comments published in news reports that state rocker-bottom shoes such as Shape-ups can cause injuries, because they change the person’s walk or gait and are unstable for users who have flat feet or those who have pre-existing difficulties maintaining their balance. They also allegedly can cause injuries in areas that are responsible for maintaining balance, such as the hamstring or ankle.

If certified, the class action lawsuit will seek damages and refunds for consumers who purchased Shape-ups. A copy of the Skechers Shape-ups Class Action Lawsuit can be read here.

I can’t believe this! I love my Shape ups for work. I’m on my feet for up to 14 hours a day and they are the only shoes I’ve found that don’t hurt my feet and back by the end of the day. Now that they’ve discontinued them I’m buying as many as I can before they all run out. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I run out. Bummed!

This is ridiculous. I bought a pair of the Sketcher’s Tone-ups because I liked them not for any other reason and they’re fine. LADIES try working out if you want to tone up.

Between the damn lawyers and people just being dishonest and wanting money, it’s no wonder why our country is where it is. This should be thrown out of court.

  5. Rebecca says:

I am looking to buy another pair…my third pair…they work wonders…for me my cellulite is gone…my butt is amazing and my legs are toned….so I don’t understand why they didn’t work for others

I have been wearing shapers every day on my job. I finally got a bone spur in my heel and have been laid up with a brace on my foot for months. While I do not attribute the shapers to my bone spur, I would like to know where to get a refund as I do not need additional problems with my legs, knees, or back. They clearly are not a good shoe to wear and seem to be causing a lot of problems for the consumer.

Ok I want in on this! I got my shape ups 2 yeas ago. I have a bad back and thought I would gain some strength walking in these sketchers. I have had other sketchers and loved them! Well after filling the directions that the DVD instructed. I have had my ankle turn over! Now I have tassel tunnel in both feet. I have lost my balance so many times! I feel they made my back condition worse! And after walking in the the pain and weakness in my feet and legs were unbearable not to mention my lower back. I just could not take it any more! I was at the tanger outlets. There was a sketcher outlet I went in and got there new memory foam walking shoe. What a difference in weight and feels better. But I hope I don’t have permeant damage from using those others work out sketchers. When I took off the old pair my feet were numb! I put the new ones on and could not even feel my feet hardly for hours.. Can I send the old pair back for a refund? I can’t ware them? I say we mail them all back! Let them deal with them….

  8. Windon says:

I too purchased a pair of the Skechers. I was only able to wear them for a short period because I experienced severe pain in both feet. I stopped wearing them. I still have pain and occasional swelling in my left foot. I received a DVD when I purchased mine. I still have them along with the box and receipt. I also submitted a claim within the proper time frame. I kept a copy of my claim and the date that I filed it as proof. I hope to hear something soon.
