An Arkansas couple recently filed a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, alleging serious Nexium long term side effects.

The plaintiff, Jill J., says she began taking the medication Nexium in 2011 to treat her heartburn at the direction of her doctor. She continued this usage for several years, through 2017.

However, Jill alleges that she was not adequately warned about the Nexium long term side effects associated with the heartburn medication. Indeed, as a result of her ingestion to the drug over these years, Jill was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, her lawsuit alleges.

Her alleged Nexium long term side effects also include pain and suffering. As a result, she claims she has also endured economic loss and emotional distress.

Despite the risk of Nexium long term side effects like chronic kidney disease linked with Nexium, Jill claims that she was not given adequate warning about these risks. Had she been properly warned, she claims, she would have been able to choose a safer alternative.

Jill filed her Nexium long term side effects lawsuit on multiple counts, including defective design, failure to warn, breach of express warranty, and punitive damages. Jill’s spouse, Arthur, also filed on one count of loss of consortium because of the Nexium long term side effects his wife has suffered.

Nexium (also sold under its generic name, esomeprazole magnesium) is a kind of heartburn drug known as a proton pump inhibitor, or PPI. Nexium is a PPI manufactured by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. PPIs like Nexium work to treat heartburn by reducing the gastric acid in a person’s stomach.

PPIs are some of the most widely used medications in the United States. Indeed, in the year 2013 alone, more than 15 million Americans were prescribed PPI medications. Nexium has become one of the more popular PPI options for heartburn treatment.
