woman loading clothes into Samsung washer modelLarge home appliances should have a life span of between eight and 10 years. However, owners of certain Samsung washer models have experienced a much shorter product life, frustrating customers and causing them to wonder if Samsung is treating them fairly.

The owners of certain Samsung washer models have reported rust stains on their clothing even as early as just two years after purchase. One Fontana, Calif. man, Eddie Macias, purchased a Samsung washer and suffered this fate.

According to NBC Los Angeles, Eddie says the Samsung washer he purchased began ruining his clothes with rust stains after only two years. The manufacturer refuses to replace it, he says.

“All my clothes are getting stained. I can’t even use the machine any more,” Macias adds. He says that he has to go to his mother’s home to wash his clothes. He also stated that he feels like he didn’t get the high-quality Samsung washer that he paid around $600 for, but instead that he bought a “very expensive eyesore.”

Rust in Top-Loading Washing Machines

Apparently, there is a rusty, red stain or growth growing across his Samsung washer near the bleach dispenser area. This rust spreads to his clothes, he says, and stains them. However, he argues, this should not be the case because this washing machine is only two years old.

According to Macias, Samsung has claimed that the problem with these certain Samsung washer models is “cosmetic” and does not affect the functionality of the appliance.

Other consumers seem to be having a similar problem with their Samsung washer models. The problem seems to lie with Samsung washer models that are top-loading. These Samsung washer models have been marketed as gentle on clothes as well as resistant to rust, damage and chipping.

But, like Macias, many customers claim that rust can occur in their Samsung washers soon after they purchase them.

Voluntary Samsung Washer Recall

In November 2017, Samsung issued a voluntary recall of their top-loading Samsung washer models. Even so, customers say, Samsung does not acknowledge the rust problem and their repair workers will not fix the problem with these Samsung washer models.

The recall, Samsung says, is for Samsung washer models manufactured between March 2011 and October 2016. Samsung says that the voluntary recall is due to customers reporting problems with washer drums. Allegedly, washer drums in these Samsung washer models lose balance, which triggers excessive vibrations. In these cases, if bulky items such as bedding were being washed,  the top of the washer could separate from the body of the machine.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Samsung regarding the rust problem.  The lead plaintiff claims that in 2013 she purchased a Samsung washer, then found rust about a year after she bought it. Within four years, she says, the Samsung washing machine was so rusty that her clothes would no longer be cleaned. In fact, she claims, her clothes were damaged and she had to clean her clothes elsewhere.

Like Macias, the plaintiff was allegedly told by Samsung repair technicians that the rust was only cosmetic and that it didn’t affect the functionality of the machine.

If you have purchased one of the problematic top-loading Samsung washer models manufactured between March 2011 and October 2016 that has developed rust which makes it unable to wash clothes, you may be eligible for compensation.

I also have the rust issue on my washer. I did have Samsung send someone out a year or two ago for the drum issue too. I’ve been going back and forth with a Samsung rep thru messages about my problem. They’ve asked me for pictures of the rust problem at least 3 times now and I”ve sent the pics 3 times. Now today I get this response:
“We are asking for this information for the technician. The cost to replace the Top Cover and labor will be covered. If the rust issue is not found on the Top Cover, the service center will provide an out-of-warranty estimate”
An OUT OF WARRANTY ESTIMATE?????? Their machine is defective, it’s rusting, it had a drum issue, I’ve had to replace the modulator cap twice (nibs break on it very easily) AND the machine is not cheap. I’m definitely in for a class action lawsuit!!!!!!

is there a class action I can join?

  2. Paulette Duggan says:

My Samsung washer is now 8 years or so old and it’s been rusting around the bleach dispenser for the last 5 years. Now to date I’m getting pieces of rust in the detergent dispenser and figure the cheap paint job that was done on this appliance is degrading in that area.
I haven’t seen rust on my clothing YET but I’m sure if I’m patient enough that will come to fruition. How much of a joke is it that we can’t buy something for such a ridiculous amount of money and not have it last more than a few years??
Samsung, you as a company, should be ashamed of the cheesy products you’re selling.. It’s not like you don’t make enough money that you can’t produce something that’s really worth buying.

I have the same. Not covered..Bullshit!!!!.

      1. Terrrt says:

Samsung top load washer is rusting inside above the detergent and softener dispenser and the small blue ball were the bleach is dispensed. While washing it makes a sound as if there is something in the load drumming on the drum. Samsung will not cover either. My last Samsung top load washer was recalled…now the new rust problem is with the replacement top load washer. Hoe can I join the class action

        1. Carolina Daino says:

Mine also, calling them was a waste.

  5. Jennifer Redd says:

I have the same rust issue when you pull out the soap dispenser. Just had chunks of rusted paint fall in soap dispenser while prepping a load. I’ve had several clothes ruined in the last 2 years not realizing it was a rust issue. Purchased this machine in 2014. Very frustrated and will make conscious decision to not purchase Samsung Products any more.

  6. Deirdre Wells says:

I bought a Samsung top loader November 25th 2016. Also bought a 5 year warranty through Home Depot. Top of washer is falling apart from rust. Pieces in my soap dispenser that have ruined items of clothing. They say it’s cosmetic. If your clothes come out with more stains than when they went it that’s a major functionality issue. Biggest rippoff ever!! Samsung won’t take responsibility nor will Home Depot who claims their warranties have 50% cosmetic coverage. I’ll NEVER purchase Samsung again. Now going to Apple phone as well.

  7. Lisa Lee says:

We have had balance issues and now the rust stain has become a rust hole

  8. Ed says:

Had this issue for a number of years. Had repairman out for the recall issue last year and he informed me there was nothing that can be done

  9. Ruby E Williams says:

I have a Samsung washer also it has rust all over both inside and outside making it impossible to use my washer, It’s a shame to pay for something only to have problems with it.

  10. Ralph Buxton says:

    Also have rust problem.

    1. Theresa Emmerling says:
