woman loading clothes into Samsung washer modelLarge home appliances should have a life span of between eight and 10 years. However, owners of certain Samsung washer models have experienced a much shorter product life, frustrating customers and causing them to wonder if Samsung is treating them fairly.

The owners of certain Samsung washer models have reported rust stains on their clothing even as early as just two years after purchase. One Fontana, Calif. man, Eddie Macias, purchased a Samsung washer and suffered this fate.

According to NBC Los Angeles, Eddie says the Samsung washer he purchased began ruining his clothes with rust stains after only two years. The manufacturer refuses to replace it, he says.

“All my clothes are getting stained. I can’t even use the machine any more,” Macias adds. He says that he has to go to his mother’s home to wash his clothes. He also stated that he feels like he didn’t get the high-quality Samsung washer that he paid around $600 for, but instead that he bought a “very expensive eyesore.”

Rust in Top-Loading Washing Machines

Apparently, there is a rusty, red stain or growth growing across his Samsung washer near the bleach dispenser area. This rust spreads to his clothes, he says, and stains them. However, he argues, this should not be the case because this washing machine is only two years old.

According to Macias, Samsung has claimed that the problem with these certain Samsung washer models is “cosmetic” and does not affect the functionality of the appliance.

Other consumers seem to be having a similar problem with their Samsung washer models. The problem seems to lie with Samsung washer models that are top-loading. These Samsung washer models have been marketed as gentle on clothes as well as resistant to rust, damage and chipping.

But, like Macias, many customers claim that rust can occur in their Samsung washers soon after they purchase them.

Voluntary Samsung Washer Recall

In November 2017, Samsung issued a voluntary recall of their top-loading Samsung washer models. Even so, customers say, Samsung does not acknowledge the rust problem and their repair workers will not fix the problem with these Samsung washer models.

The recall, Samsung says, is for Samsung washer models manufactured between March 2011 and October 2016. Samsung says that the voluntary recall is due to customers reporting problems with washer drums. Allegedly, washer drums in these Samsung washer models lose balance, which triggers excessive vibrations. In these cases, if bulky items such as bedding were being washed,  the top of the washer could separate from the body of the machine.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Samsung regarding the rust problem.  The lead plaintiff claims that in 2013 she purchased a Samsung washer, then found rust about a year after she bought it. Within four years, she says, the Samsung washing machine was so rusty that her clothes would no longer be cleaned. In fact, she claims, her clothes were damaged and she had to clean her clothes elsewhere.

Like Macias, the plaintiff was allegedly told by Samsung repair technicians that the rust was only cosmetic and that it didn’t affect the functionality of the machine.

If you have purchased one of the problematic top-loading Samsung washer models manufactured between March 2011 and October 2016 that has developed rust which makes it unable to wash clothes, you may be eligible for compensation.

Mine is rusting as well. Just waiting until the lid breaks off completely for being rusted out. I have never seen a washer do this before.

Rust pieces falling into washer when lid is lifted.

  2. yunuen says:

After 2 years of purchasing a Samsung top loader it has rust around the rim where the clorox is placed and other areas. It also has issues with the spin cycle. I have reached out to Samsung about the loud noise it makes when spinning. They statard it was part of a recall and will be sending out a technician.

Samsung washer model WA48H7400AW/A2 — MAJOR Rusting the around the bleach dispenser , soap dispense around the top (around the window) and under the rim where water enters We have never seen a washer rust before. Especially a YOUNG washer. It is now beginning to harm clothing and laundry.

It is disgusting that this happens to YOUNG washers. Our Washer has SEVERAL large areas of growing rust. It actually started around the ‘viewing window’ rim. The washer was less then a year! We thought it was DIRT.. but from where? Nope not dirt RUST, the next rust showed up above the SOAP dispenser when the dispenser started showing brown spots along the track when we opened it to add soap. Took the dispenser out and cleaned that ‘ceiling’ and all we got was rust colored paper towel. the Bleach dispenser was next (we don’t use bleach) and then the rim where the water comes out to fill the washer…… it is disgusting. We are READY TO put it on the side of a busy road with magic marker saying “SAMSUNG LEMON_ WASHER DO NOT BUY. Samsung either used poor or poorly prepared metals , paints or prep .. but they did this to CUT CORNERS …. and we are paying the price. Who can afford a new washer after buying what you thought was at least an 8-10 year investment in cleaning .

How do you become a part of the class action lawsuit for the rust issue?

  4. Sue Kendig says:

We have the same issue! I constantly see pieces of peeled off rust IN the detergent/softener dispenser. I remove the dispenser from time to time to clean the dirty gunk that accumulates, but of course that does not address the rust issue. The rust must be forming on the underside of the machine above the dispenser. It gets into the dispenser and then into the wash tub and on our clothing. On a related note, we have also had several repairs on our Samsung refrigerator. The repair tech said Samsung’s large appliances have numerous issues and they should stick to manufacturing electronic devices. I told him I also have a Samsung washer and dryer – he said I can count on needing repairs on those at some point, too! My washer is out of warranty, but the rust has been an issue for quite some time and is only getting worse. We had researched and made a point of purchasing what we thought were the best in appliances in order to get quality and durable products. Samsung has not performed – never again!

We stand united . This is wrong on so many levels ….

  5. Zachary Heinfeld says:

Same here I, I’m sure this number is in the thousands as these were sold at the big box stores. When will this lawsuit start. Samsung should have bought back these problematic washers long ago.

  6. Charlene Johnson says:

My Samsung washing machine has rust in the washing machine basket after I wash clothes at time. The technician came out and addressed the unsafe washing machine top issue recall. However, he did not address the rust issue.

  8. Sharon Taylor says:

We purchased our Samsung top loading washer in February 2013. A repairman fixed the shaking, then we had another repair because the bracket that holds the water pump broke. We’ve had an ongoing problem where after the wash is finished, the clothes have pieces of what looks like rust all over them. The drum also has pieces of rust in the bottom after the wash. I’ve called twice today and haven’t gotten an answer to my problem. Don’t know where this rust is coming from. Hoses and screen all checked. Any ideas?

    1. Gale Webber says:

Check under the rim just inside….mine is all Rusty and paint is peeling.

    2. JK Burke says:

Open the soap dispenser – pull it out – take a cloth or paper towel and wipe the ‘ceiling ‘ of the area where the dispenser goes ! VOILA RUST. the RIM where the water enters the tub … VOILA RUST, the window area VOILA rust, the bleach dispenser Huge and growing rust. Isn’t it disgusting that so many of us are in the same boat and have closing and laundry being ruined after we purchased , what we thought, would be a great washing machine….. it is IS A LEMON

  9. Richard Womack says:

Samsung’s top of the line washer that is rusting from the inside out. Obviously untreated metal on the inside, so there is no fix. Contacting Samsung with the washer still under warranty we were told their warranty does not cover rust or any resulting damage. So they refused to do anything. Now the entire top of the washer is rusting away possibly creating a safety hazard.

    1. Roberta says:

      So is mine

    2. Jerry Mosenson says:

Our Samsung washer is also rusting and they will not do anything for us. We were told washer is over a year old so out of warranty. It is ruining all our clothes.

  10. Sherry Dale says:

My Samsung doesn’t work correctly, it goes off balance easily, so you are forced to do small loads. It is a known defect but the great people at sears doesn’t honor their warranties. Will never buy a Samsung or shop at sears again.
