Update:

  • A judge dismissed a class action lawsuit over an alleged Samsung refrigerator defect in a New Jersey federal court late last month.
  • The plaintiffs claimed Samsung sold refrigerators with defective French-door external dispensers allegedly prone to leaking, slushing over, freezing and excessive noise.
  • The class action, first filed in 2017, had previously been in mediation for more than a year following a judge’s order in 2019 and prior to a scheduled court hearing in May 2021.

(April 27, 2021)

After being in mediation for more than a year, the class action lawsuit claiming Samsung refrigerators suffer from an ice tray defect continues to be negotiated.

In their 2017 class action lawsuit, lead plaintiffs Ronald and Debra Bianchi claimed that a defect in Samsung refrigerators with French door external dispensers causes a number of problems, including leaks, slush, over freezing, and excessive fan noise.

In 2019, U.S. District Court Judge Claire C. Cecchi ordered the parties to mediation in a bid to help them resolve the claims in the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit. Though the parties are still mediating, a court hearing has been scheduled for May 4, 2021, and Samsung has submitted a response to the complaint.

Top Class Actions reached out to class counsel who confirmed that the parties are still mediating.

The nationwide class action lawsuit and alleged Samsung refrigerator defects potentially affect thousands of consumers. Top Class Actions will continue to monitor developments in the litigation.

The Bianchis alleged in their Samsung ice maker class action lawsuit that thousands of consumers have been subject to leaky refrigerators. The units at issue include residential refrigerators with a French door external dispenser built-in.

The allegedly affected models are: RF23HCEDB, RF23HCEDT, RFH23HSESB, RF23HTEDB, RF23J9011, RF24FSEDB, RF25HMEDB, RF263BEAE, RF263TEAE, RF26J7500, RF28HDEDB, RF28HDEDT, RF28HFEDB, RF28HFEDT, RF28HFPDB, RF30HDEDT, RF31FMEDB, RF31FMESB, RF323TEDB, RF32FMQDB, RF34H9950 and RF34H9960 in all colors.

The plaintiffs claimed that the defective ice makers lead to not only leaks out of the fridge, but inside as well. In addition, consumers complain that the ice bucket becomes stuck, possibly due to a clogged drain from the defect.

The class action lawsuit claims that the manufacturer has refused to address the alleged defect. Indeed, Samsung has fought the allegations, filing a motion to dismiss the class action prior to mediation in 2019 and again denying the allegations in court documents filed in February of this year.

Have the Samsung French door refrigerator (model RF18HFENBSR/AA) but do not have a ice maker. However I have notice water sitting in the crisper draw and underneath it. I was told to take the back panels off and look at the corals but I do not feel like that is something I feel comfortable doing. It has not gotten to the point I am losing food.
I tried unplugging it for 48 hours to see would it defrost but only to have it start dripping water again with a week.
This is RIDICUOUS this refrigerator cost to mush money.

  3. Chris Hack says:

We purchased a house with brand new Samsung appliances including a French door model with lower freezer with internal ice maker. The unit was purchased by the builder and the warranty was registered in June 2023. The power to the house was off until we moved in November 2023. The refrigerator worked fine for two months and then the first sign of issues was ice maker was not dispensing ice. Soon after the freezer warmed up and then the top stopped cooling. Within 48 hours the total cooling system stopped. Samsung sent an authorized repair technician who stated the entire system needs replacement. We are now stuck with a refrigerator hoping Samsung will make it right.

Have the Samsung French door refrigerator (model RF28N9780SR) and have been blow drying the ice maker now at least once a week due to ice buildup. It doesn’t take a genius to see that the ice chute is too narrow for the ice to fall into the tray so they keep building up. Poor design and Samsung won’t step up and own their design flaw. Never buying Samsung again and recommending no one else too either.

  5. Cynthia Cawthon says:

Yes!!! I have been on my husband since he bought this refrigerator the ice would just spew out then it freezes up and doesn’t make ice at all. He is constantly blow drying the unit because it seems to over freeze. Worse fridge ever!!!!!! I’ve hated the I’ve maker from day 1.

  6. Lenora Salandi says:

Same problem – the ice maker stopped working, we had to buy a new one and pay someone to install it. Very, very disappointed in Samsung as we have a whole house filled with their products and all have Galaxy phones. Shame on you, Samsung, for treating loyal customers so poorly.

  7. Debra G. Akers says:

We purchased French door refrigerator, it was purchased in good faith, I have lost food, ice maker quit long time ago leaks into drawers and gets water under and in drawers. The fridge itself is all froze up. Only time I can keep things cool is in the cold winter weather. It got into the upper 40s and fifty’s and already heating up. The below freezer is the only that works. I wish I had a dollar for every time I defrosted it. It was at its worst when I lost my husband 3 years ago. It’s has gotten to the point I am going to have to replace it, but I don’t know where I’ll get the money. It half way made ice a cooled till warranty was out. I need help with this whole mess. I’m in my 70s and am lost.. Is there any help out there?!

  8. Mark Yates says:

My icemaker chute opens and closes constantly and water has begun leaking into the refrigerator from the icemaker. Issue has been escalated to top tier at Samsung. I’ve read that other are experiencing the same issues and Samsung refuses to fix.

  9. MISTY COOK says:

Mine will over flow with water and freeze the bottle drawer, and the ice container will be frozen solid. If the judge would read online this is a recurring problem with Samsungs. They need to stick to phones and not Applicance’s.

  10. Terry Nerat says:

I have a Samsung french doors with freezer drawers on the bottom. Been having alot of issues with the ice maker. I had a repair guy come over and installed a new ice maker and still having issues with it. Model RF28HDEDBSR/AA, SERIAL NO: 06EC438F4030348.
