The makers of Roundup face a lawsuit alleging that the active ingredient in its weed killer product is linked to an increased risk of cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Monsanto Company, a multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri face the alleged contentions.
The plaintiffs filing the alleged Roundup lymphoma lawsuit assert that they had suffered damages because of the defendant’s “negligent and wrongful conduct” in its manufacturing, distributing and selling of the Roundup herbicide and the active ingredient, glyphosate.
“Roundup and/or glyphosate is defective, dangerous to human health, unfit and unsuitable to be marketed and sold in commerce, and lacked proper warnings and directions as to the dangers associated with its use,” the Roundup lymphoma lawsuit states.
Plaintiff Laurie M. a resident of Ohio, alleged she purchased the Roundup product or other “Monsanto glyphosate-containing product” between 2013 and 2016, and was later diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2015.
By the same token, plaintiff Robert H., also an Ohio resident, purchased the Roundup product or other “Monsanto glyphosate-containing product” between 2006 and 2016, and was also diagnosed with non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2015.
Thirteen more plaintiffs had similarly used the Roundup product or other “Monsanto glyphosate-containing product” and were also diagnosed with non- Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
According to the Roundup lymphoma lawsuit, the weed killer has been linked to several other adverse side effects not limited to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. These adverse side effects also include leukemia, bone cancer, skin tumors, renal cell carcinoma, B-cell lymphoma, DNA damage, chromosomal damage, pancreatic islet cell tumors and other cancers.
Several reports have been released that have shown and concluded that the active ingredient, glyphosate, in Roundup, or other glyphosate containing products are linked to cancer.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, released a report in 2015 linking a risk of cancer to pesticides such as glyphosate.
A U.S. study, published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal similarly discussed the associated cancer risks involved with pesticides. They concluded that glyphosate was a likely carcinogen, and that it was “associated with increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma] incidence.”
The plaintiffs filing the Roundup Lymphoma lawsuit allege that the active ingredient in Roundup and other “Monsanto glyphosate-containing products” led to them to a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The Roundup lymphoma lawsuit alleges that Monsanto had falsely advertised the safety of its product. According to the lawsuit, the defendant committed “scientific fraud” to keep the pesticide on the market. Moreover, they also allege that the defendants violated further federal regulations.
According to the Roundup lymphoma lawsuit, federal regulations were violated particularly by “holding secret ex parte meetings and conversations with certain EPA employees to collude in a strategy to re-register glyphosate and to quash investigations into the carcinogenicity of glyphosate by other federal agencies such as the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.”
The Roundup lymphoma lawsuit contends that, “for nearly 40 years, farms across the world have used Roundup without knowing of the dangers its use poses.”
The Roundup Lymphoma Lawsuit is Case No. 4:17-cv-01593, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, Eastern Division.
