Monsanto Company is facing a new Roundup lawsuit from an Alabama couple alleging the weedkiller caused the husband to develop cancer. The couple filed the Roundup lawsuit after discovering Monsanto Company either knew or should have known about a correlation between cancer and Roundup’s main ingredient, glyphosate.
Plaintiff couple Larry G. and Sue G. are conjointly filing this Roundup lawsuit, alleging the weedkiller was the direct cause of Larry’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Larry says he was exposed to Roundup on a regular basis since 1978 when he began work as a peanut farmer, and even more so beginning in 1997 when he began his own hobby farm.
Larry says he used Roundup to ward of weeds, and he claims he had no reason to believe there were any dangerous health effects. According to the Roundup lawsuit, Larry had used the weedkiller on a regular basis between 1997 to 2005 on his 15 acre farm and had followed all instructions provided on the product’s label.
As a result of this regular exposure, Larry says, he developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was diagnosed with the disease in 2007. Larry has since had to contend with many harsh treatments to keep himself alive, and has been forced to cease working.
Larry is currently receiving infusions of gammaglobulin IV therapy every three weeks because his immune system was permanently damaged by chemotherapy and the disease.
At all times relevant, Larry says he used Roundup for its intended purpose and did not deviate from product instructions. Larry and Sue opted to file this Roundup cancer lawsuit after discovering that glyphosate was linked to a number of cancers.
Overview of Roundup Cancer Correlation
Monsanto Company is facing public criticism for allegedly concealing knowledge of the potential correlation between glyphosate and cancer for years, with the Environmental Protection Agency suspecting a link back in the 1980s.
Researchers began observing the effects of glyphosate and other pesticides, after noticing a significant number of farmers were being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Several studies in particular had contributed to a report being published that concluded glyphosate was carcinogenic, including:
- A Canadian study published in the American Association for Cancer Research in November 2001, which found that men exposed to glyphosate were developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after exposed in under 10 years.
- A U.S. study published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, which concluded that glyphosate and other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and had a strong association with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
- A Swedish study published in the International Journal of Cancer, which found that the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was very strong with glyphosate exposure.
In addition to these studies, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report in March 2015 stating that glyphosate and four other pesticides were probable carcinogens.
Consumers like Larry say they have been using Roundup for years without knowing its alleged link with cancer, resulting in numerous situations like Larry and Sue’s. The couple is filing this Roundup lawsuit raising claims including negligence and failure to warn. Larry states he would not have used Roundup if he had known the carcinogenic effects of glyphosate.
This Roundup Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-00795-SRW, in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama.
