A Kansas woman recently filed a lawsuit against Monsanto Company alleging that she suffers from Roundup cancer due to exposure to its popular weedkiller product. According to this lawsuit and others like it, Roundup weedkiller carries with it a substantial cancer risk.
The plaintiff, Joyce B., alleges that she used her Roundup weedkiller on a regular basis for years, following instructions and safety warnings. The listed warnings did not include the risk of Roundup cancer.
Unfortunately, Joyce was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a kind of cancer. According to Joyce’s lawsuit, her non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was a direct result of her years-long exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller product. On top of her cancer diagnosis, Joyce alleges she has also suffered from economic and emotional damages as a result of this exposure.
Joyce filed her Roundup cancer lawsuit on Feb. 2, 2018 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The Roundup cancer lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, design defect, failure to warn and others.
Joyce’s lawsuit, along with many others like it, alleges that Monsanto has been aware of serious Roundup cancer risk linked with its popular weedkiller products, and yet has misrepresented the use of Roundup as safe.
She claims Monsanto’s advertising of Roundup has made the product seem far safer than it actually is. The company was allegedly aware of a serious cancer risk associated with Roundup, but even still has used tag lines like “safer than table salt,” playing down that risk. Monsanto was hit with a lawsuit by the New York Attorney General back in 1996 over these kinds of statements.
Basics of Roundup Cancer
Monsanto’s Roundup has been a widely used weedkiller product for decades. Unfortunately, Roundup’s active ingredient is glyphosate, which has been linked with a number of serious kinds of cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
A growing number of those exposed to Roundup have filed lawsuits against Monsanto with allegations of Roundup cancer risk, alleging that they were diagnosed with cancer because of their use of and exposure to the weedkiller.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began to suspect a connection between Roundup and cancer since the 1980s. A report published in March 2015 by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that glyphosate is linked with cancer.
Roundup Cancer Risk
Roundup cancer risk from the use of Roundup has reportedly included a number of cancers. These cancers include the following:
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple myeloma
- B-cell lymphoma
- Bone cancer
- Renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Other cancers
