A new set of plaintiffs has filed a glyphosate and cancer lawsuit against the Monsanto Company, manufacturers of the Roundup weed killer product, after developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from product use.
The glyphosate and cancer lawsuit alleges that regular exposure to Roundup directly contributed to their development of cancer.
The glyphosate and cancer lawsuit was filed by the plaintiffs in St. Louis County court and has since been removed to federal court.
According to the glyphosate and cancer lawsuit, plaintiff Jill P., a New York resident, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2015. Other plaintiffs included in the lawsuit were similarly diagnosed with cancer. They state that had they known that the product’s main ingredient, glyphosate, was linked to cancer, they could have avoided developing cancer.
The glyphosate and cancer lawsuit was filed on multiple counts of design defect, failure to warn and negligence. The plaintiffs demand a trial by jury.
Roundup Overview
There have been more than 1,100 lawsuits in federal and state courts due to Roundup’s link to cancers like non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, especially among gardeners and laborers. Farmers and gardeners are suffering from the development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and have filed lawsuits against the company due to the herbicide’s alleged link to the disease.
Monsanto’s Roundup is one of the most commonly used herbicides in the world. Its active ingredient is glyphosate. Some people that have regularly used Roundup have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other kinds of cancers.
While lawsuits are being filed against Monsanto, plaintiffs claim the company continues to misinform the public and government agencies about Roundup’s safety.
In fact, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a division of the World Health Organization (WHO), glyphosate is a chemical that is probably carcinogenic.
Additionally, the United States Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has said about current glyphosate exposure that “glyphosate ranks high among pesticides causing illness or injury to workers, who report numerous incidents of eye and skin irritation from splashes during mixing and loading.”
What is scarier is that glyphosate use in the United States is more common than it ever was. Glyphosate targets an enzyme responsible for plant growth. According to reports, glyphosate use is only increasing and seventy-five percent of all glyphosate sprayed since the 1970’s happened within the last decade alone.
Ninety-three percent of people may have glyphosate in their bodies, as concluded in a study conducted by the Detox Project. The study consisted of volunteer test participants who, when tested, found traces of glyphosate in their bodies. The study reported that children may be found to possess higher percentages of the glyphosate chemical on average.
The Glyphosate and Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. 4:18-cv-00008-NCC, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
