Unfortunately, a possible connection between Levaquin and aortic aneurysm means that those patients using these antibiotics should be aware of the possibility of aortic dissection treatment.
Levaquin, a popular antibiotic, has been tied to the risk of aortic aneurysm. Patients who develop an aortic aneurysm may require immediate aortic dissection treatment, and a growing number of lawsuits allege that the manufacturer failed to properly warn patients about this risk or allow them to identify the symptoms which could indicate a serious aortic event.
An aortic dissection is a medical emergency that should prompt the patient to get immediate treatment. Therapy may include medications or surgery, depending on the portion of the aorta affected. In a surgery aortic dissection treatment, surgeons remove as much as possible of the dissected aorta and use a graft to reconstruct the aorta.
Aortic dissection treatment can be especially problematic because diagnosing the symptoms of an aortic dissection is challenging. The symptoms of aortic dissection resemble many other health problems. Aortic dissection is often diagnosed if the following symptoms are present; the widening of the aorta in the chest x-ray, a sudden ripping or tearing chest pain, and a blood pressure difference between the left and the right arms.
Sensitive imaging techniques are often required in order to find out if aortic dissection treatment is necessary for those patients who have used Levaquin. These include an MRA, a CT scan, and a TEE.
Treatments can be invasive and carry their own risk of side effects. Plenty of patients who have had no other option but to go this route say that they wanted to be warned about the possible risks so that they could take next steps to protect their interests. Aortic dissection treatment can be hard for patients to accept, especially if the patient did not expect the risk of developing this side effect.
Certain medications can lower blood pressure and reduce heart rate, which can be used to help the aortic dissection from getting any worse. New research suggests that people taking fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as Levaquin are two to three times more likely to ultimately require aortic dissection treatment because of the development of aortic issues.
Some of the side effects linked to use of fluoroquinolones like Levaquin include an aortic aneurysm, also known as a bulge in the aorta, and aortic dissection, or a tear in the aorta.
Many different lawsuits that have been filed after patients have had to get aortic dissection treatment allege that the labels for these drugs do not contain an appropriate warning. This means that patients do not even know about the risks or how to look out for it.
Common bacterial infections prompt physicians to give more than 20 million prescriptions for fluoroquinolone antibiotics every single year. A 2015 study, however, revealed that fluoroquinolone antibiotic use could lead to aortic dissection or aortic aneurysm.
Those patients who have already developed these side effects might have grounds to pursue compensation with the help of an experienced attorney. Current investigations are looking for those patients who have had to go through aortic dissection treatment as a result of taking fluoroquinolones like Levaquin.
