Utz potato chip recall overview:
- Who: Utz Quality Foods LLC is recalling limited varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips.
- Why: The recall is due to potential Salmonella contamination in a seasoning ingredient.
- Where: The recall is effective across the United States.
Utz Quality Foods has initiated a voluntary recall of specific Zapp’s and Dirty potato chip varieties due to a potential health risk.
The recall, announced on May 4, follows concerns that a seasoning ingredient, sourced from California Dairies Inc., might be contaminated with Salmonella. Although the seasoning batches tested negative prior to use, Utz is taking precautionary measures to ensure consumer safety.
The recall affects several varieties of Zapp’s as well as Dirty potato chips, including Bayou Blackened Ranch, Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, Big Cheezy, and Sour Cream and Onion, with specific UPCs and batch numbers. These products are available nationwide in various sizes, such as 1.5oz, 2oz, 2.5oz and 8oz packages.
Utz emphasizes that no other products are included in this potato chip recall. “Consumers who have these products should not eat them and should discard any products they may have,” the recall notice states.
Salmonella is known to cause serious health issues, particularly in vulnerable populations, such as young children and the elderly. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In severe cases, it can lead to more dangerous conditions like arterial infections or endocarditis.
Consumers advised to discard affected potato chips
The potato chip recall notice advises consumers not to consume the affected Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips and instead dispose of them.
Retailers are also urged to ensure that these products are removed from shelves to prevent any potential health risks to consumers.
