A growing number of Pradaxa users are filing lawsuits, alleging that the blood thinner causes Pradaxa bleeding injury problems. Any medication comes with certain mild side effects, and Pradaxa is no exception.
However, despite the popularity and widespread usage of the Pradaxa blood thinner, many patients claim that the risk of Pradaxa bleeding injury is greater than the benefits it offers.
Background of Pradaxa
Pradaxa (also known by its generic name, dabigatran) was approved for use as a blood thinner or anticoagulant by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just seven years ago, in 2010.
Over the last few years, newer blood thinners like Pradaxa have begun to enter the market in an attempt to replace warfarin (Coumadin), which has remained the dominant anticoagulant for decades.
Pradaxa and other new blood thinners seek to improve upon warfarin by offering greater convenience for its users. These new anticoagulants no longer require the use of constant blood monitoring checkups that have always been required for warfarin.
While Pradaxa and these other drugs also involve a considerable price hike, millions of patients have already switched to Pradaxa, clearly willing to pay the substantial difference for the sake of convenience they find in the newer drug.
Unfortunately, Pradaxa has been linked with putting patients at risk of Pradaxa bleeding injury. Given the sudden and intense popularity of this new anticoagulant, the risk of Pradaxa bleeding injury faces a huge number of patients who may not know about this risk.
Risk of Pradaxa Bleeding Injury
While any medication brings with it the risk of certain mild side effects, Pradaxa bleeding injury can be permanently damaging and even fatal, and occur often enough to be of serious concern.
If a person suffers from a bleeding injury, the body’s natural defense mechanism is to form blood clots that slow down the bleeding, helping to prevent more significant damage.
The purpose of a blood thinner is to prevent such blood clots. For some patients, that’s a desireable result: it can prevent dangerous clot-related conditions like stroke and pulmonary embolism.
But impairment of the blood’s clotting mechanism can put patients in serious danger if they suffer a Pradaxa bleeding injury. Without their normal clotting function, their bleeding may be difficult or impossible to control.
A Pradaxa bleeding injury can be one of many serious problems associated with this drug. Some other Pradaxa complications include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Heart attacks
- Liver failure
- Major bleeding
- Death
Filing a Lawsuit Over Pradaxa Bleeding Injury
Lawsuits filed against Pradaxa’s manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, claim that the company either knew or should have known about the risk of serious Pradaxa bleeding injury, but failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community. Thousands of Pradaxa users have already filed lawsuits in response.
While filing a Pradaxa lawsuit cannot negate the pain and suffering caused by Pradaxa bleeding injury, it can help compensate for financial expenses from medical bills and lost wages.
If you or someone you love has taken Pradaxa and subsequently experienced Pradaxa bleeding injury or other major complications, you may be able to file a Pradaxa lawsuit.
In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
