A North Carolina man recently filed a Xarelto blood thinner lawsuit, adding to the growing pile of litigation against Janssen Pharmaceuticals over dangerous complications stemming from its popular anticoagulant.
The plaintiff, Anthony L., began taking Xarelto at the direction of his doctor in February 2015 in order to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
However, the very same month after he began taking Xarelto, Anthony suffered from hematuria (that is, having blood in his urine) and was admitted to the hospital, where he remained for three days. Anthony’s doctors immediately took him off of Xarelto, alleviating his symptoms.
In response to the bleeding injury, Anthony chose to file a Xarelto blood thinner lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals. According to the lawsuit, he directly suffered from bleeding injury because of his intake of Xarelto, incurring additional medical expenses.
His lawsuit and others like it allege that Janssen failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community alike about the serious bleeding risks associated with its anticoagulant, placing patients at significant risk.
Anthony’s Xarelto blood thinner lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including negligence, strict liability, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent misrepresentation and concealment, and others. He filed his Xarelto blood thinner lawsuit on Feb. 8, 2018 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Basics of Xarelto
Xarelto (also known by its generic name, rivaroxaban) is a blood thinner drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on July 1, 2011.
Xarelto belongs to a new class of blood thinner drugs that also includes the popular drugs Pradaxa and Eliquis. These anticoagulants are marketed as replacement anticoagulants for warfarin (Coumadin), which has been the dominant anticoagulant on the market for decades.
Xarelto is manufactured and distributed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a prominent subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, and is meant to prevent blood clots and the problems caused by blood clotting. It is mainly prescribed to treat deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, conditions that both involve blood clotting.
Xarelto Bleeding Complications
While blood clotting is generally a condition to avoid, which is why patients take anticoagulants like Xarelto in the first place, clotting can in some instances actually perform a life-saving function. When the body bleeds, its natural defense mechanism is to use blood clotting to slow the bleeding, which can prevent a person from losing too much blood.
However, if unable to form these life-saving blood clots while on a blood thinner, the body has no other way of slowing the bleeding, which increases the risk of permanent Xarelto bleeding injury or even death.
Filing a Xarelto Blood Thinner Lawsuit
A growing number of lawsuits are being filed over Xarelto side effects. Filing a Xarelto blood thinner lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering of someone who has experienced a Xarelto bleeding injury, and cannot bring a loved one back to life. However, a Xarelto blood thinner lawsuit can at least help to compensate for the financial expenses often incurred by medical bills and lost wages.
If you or someone you love has experienced a severe Xarelto bleeding injury, or even death caused by Xarelto, you may be able to file a Xarelto blood thinner lawsuit.
The Xarelto Blood Thinner Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-01274-EEF-MBN, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
