Monsanto non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is being alleged in a new product liability lawsuit, filed by a Georgia woman alleging the company failed to warn her against the disease.
The woman claims she was not warned against Monsanto non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at any point in time, and that she would not have used the product if she had received notification.
Plaintiff Karen D. alleges her Monsanto-induced non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma had developed as an alleged result of regularly using the company’s popular weedkiller Roundup. More specifically, she claims Roundup’s main ingredient glyphosate has been established as a carcinogen and dangerous if exposed to without protective equipment.
Glyphosate is a broad spectrum herbicide, which targets specific plant life often classified as weeds. Glyphosate is one of the most commonly used weedkillers in the United States, being used to treat plant nurseries, golf courses, and lawn grass on personal properties.
According to the Roundup lawsuit, Karen had started using the weedkiller on a regular basis in 1976 to 1986 while she was living in Illinois and again between 1986 to 2010 after she moved to Georgia. During both time periods, Karen says she only used the weedkiller for typical purposes and was exposed to glyphosate on a regular basis.
Karen says she was eventually diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma on Feb. 19, 2016. She opted to file legal action after discovering the company either knew or should have known about the carcinogenic nature of glyphosate.
Overview of Monsanto non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Correlation
Glyphosate has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for decades, with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suspecting it was a carcinogen since the 1980s. Researchers began to explore the alleged correlation between glyphosate and other pesticides after numerous farmers had reportedly developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
This research was eventually consolidated and released in a report by the International Agency for Research (IARC) in March 2015, which concluded glyphosate was a probable carcinogen. The report came after several studies were published in the United States, Canada, and Sweden showing similar results.
The study published in the United States was in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, which concluded glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and had an increased association with higher non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma incidence.
The study published in Canada was in the medical journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, which found that men exposed to glyphosate were likely to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in just under 10 years. The Swedish study had found similar results, which was published in the International Journal of Cancer.
In addition to Monsanto non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, consumers using Roundup are at risk for other cancers including but not limited to:
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Skin Tumors
- Pancreatic Islet Cell Tumors
- Chromosomal Damage
- DNA Damage
Monsanto was reportedly aware of the risks of cancer development in conjunction with glyphosate, but had allegedly prolonged a campaign of misinformation to government officials and the general public about Roundup’s safety profile. Karen is filing this Roundup lawsuit seeking multiple damages, including negligence and failure to warn.
This Monsanto non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Lawsuit is Case No. 1:18-cv-01215, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
