The Monsanto Company is facing a recently filed Roundup lymphoma lawsuit, filed by a woman from Louisiana alleging the popular weedkiller had caused her to develop non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The Roundup lymphoma lawsuit alleges the Monsanto Company was well aware that their product was potentially carcinogenic, but had failed to warn the claimant as well as the general consumer population in the United States.
Plaintiff Helen G. alleges she developed Roundup lymphoma after years of regular exposure, which occurred with typical uses of the weedkiller.
Roundup is one of the most popular weedkillers in the United States, with the main ingredient glyphosate being one of the most widely used herbicides in the world. Approximately 250 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on crops, commercial, nurseries, suburban lawns, parks, and golf courses, which means that millions of consumers purchase this product each year.
The Monsanto Company markets Roundup as a selective herbicide, which targets weeds while not impacting crops or other plants the consumer is trying to nourish. Glyphosate works by targeting plants with the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimic acid-3-phosphate synthase, and eventually causes the weeds to die out.
With these benefits in mind and no mention of the risk of cancer, Helen claims she and other consumers had no reason to be wary of the possibility of Roundup lymphoma. According to the Roundup lymphoma lawsuit, Helen had used the herbicide for years on a regular basis and had followed all safety and precautionary warnings.
During all times relevant, Helen says she used Roundup according the instructions provided and did not use the herbicide outside of its intended purpose. Even with this diligence, Helen had still allegedly developed Roundup lymphoma.
Helen opted to file this Roundup lymphoma lawsuit after discovering Monsanto Company allegedly failed to disclose their product’s alleged link to non Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers.
Overview of Roundup Lymphoma Lawsuit
The allegedly carcinogenic nature of Roundup has been suspected for several years, after researchers noticed that a number of farmers had been diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma after years of using glyphosate-based weed killers.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had allegedly suspected a correlation in the 1980s, which spurred researchers to further investigate the alleged link. Most recently in March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had released a report consisting of the results of three studies that indicated a link between glyphosate and cancer.
The studies were from the United States, Europe, and Sweden, which indicated that glyphosate and certain other pesticides could cause cancer:
- Canada Study: Published in November 2001, the study was published by the American Association for Cancer Research, which found that subjects exposed to glyphosate were developing non Hodgkin’s lymphoma in under 10 years.
- United States Study: Published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, which concluded that glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and were associated with an increased risk of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
- Sweden Study: Published in October 2008 in the International Journal of Cancer, which found that the risk of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma doubled in less than 10 years after glyphosate exposure.
Even though the Monsanto Company was allegedly aware of the risk of Roundup lymphoma for over 40 years, the company failed to warn the public. Helen states she would not have used the weedkiller, if she had known the risk of Roundup lymphoma.
This Roundup Lymphoma Lawsuit is Case No. 4:18-cv-00868-NAB, in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Missouri.
