roundupWere you or a loved one diagnosed with cancer after working with the popular weedkiller Roundup?

Monsanto Company is facing a new Roundup leukemia lawsuit from an Arizona couple, alleging the popular weedkiller had caused the husband’s deadly cancer development. The Roundup leukemia lawsuit alleges the manufacturer either knew or should have known about their product’s alleged connection with cancer, but had failed to disclose this information to the general public.

Plaintiff couple Isaac A. and Stephanie H. had opted to file the Roundup leukemia lawsuit after discovering the company may have known that their weedkiller contains a carcinogen.

The Roundup leukemia lawsuit was filed soon after Isaac was diagnosed with the disease. He was reportedly exposed to Roundup regularly between 2012 and 2015.

Isaac claims he used Roundup on his property for at least three years during his time in maintenance employment. As an alleged result of this exposure, Isaac developed and was later diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in September 2015. Since his diagnosis, Isaac says he has had to contend with rigorous medical treatment for the disease.

He and his wife filed the Roundup leukemia lawsuit, stating he did not know the weedkiller’s ingredients could potentially cause cancer until after July 29, 2015. At this time, the first Roundup cancer study was published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) after researchers discovered Roundup’s main ingredient, glyphosate, could pose a risk of cancer.

Overview of Roundup Cancer Risks

The IARC also linked four other pesticides to cancer in this report, which came after several significant studies were published in the United States, Canada and Sweden beginning in 2001.

The study conducted in the United States was published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Journal, which concluded that glyphosate was “potentially carcinogenic” and was “associated with increased NHL [non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma] incidence.”

Researchers began investigating the alleged link between glyphosate and cancer after noticing a number of farmers had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had reportedly began suspecting the link from as far back as the 1980s.

The FDA eventually released a warning regarding the alleged correlation on Feb. 17, 2016, stating that the it was planning to start testing for glyphosate residue in certain foods including: soybeans, corn, milk, eggs, and potentially more. According to a representative, the FDA had considered starting this process in the fiscal year 2016.

It is important to note that Monsanto Company is the world’s leading producer of glyphosate. It produces approximately 27% of the world seed market. There have been numerous studies observing the effects of glyphosate in rivers, streams, and groundwater in agricultural areas the weedkiller was used.

Even though Monsanto Company allegedly knew about the cancer risks for years, it also allegedly failed to disclose this information to the public. At all times relevant, Isaac says he had used Roundup for its intended purpose, and did not deviate from product instructions.

In addition, Isaac received no warnings from Monsanto Company nor was he provided any relevant studies. Isaac states he would not have used Roundup, if he had known the potential risk of leukemia.

This Roundup Leukemia Lawsuit is Case No. 2:17-cv-03205-GMS, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.
