Monsanto Company is facing a new non Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuit from a Kentucky man alleging the popular weed killer caused him to develop cancer.
The non Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuit alleges the company either knew or should have known about the alleged link between Roundup and cancer. Roundup is used by millions of Americans on a daily basis, with many of them largely unaware of the potentially deadly side effects associated with the weed killer.
Plaintiff Timothy R. filed his non Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuit after discovering the alleged link between glyphosate and cancer. Glyphosate is the main ingredient in Roundup and is commonly used as a pesticide and weed killer.
According to the non Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuit, Timothy began using Roundup on a regular basis in 1986. During all times relevant, Timothy exercised all precautions advised by the warning label and did not use the product outside of its intended purpose. Even with this diligence, Timothy developed non Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2012.
Timothy opted to file a non Hodgkin’s lymphoma lawsuit, after discovering the company may have known about their product’s alleged link to cancer for years. These allegations stem from several studies that were published in a single report in March 2015, showing a link between glyphosate and cancer.
Overview of Roundup Cancer
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a 2015 report that concluded glyphosate was carcinogenic. Along with glyphosate, the IARC report also found that four other pesticides could cause cancer to develop.
The report consisted of different studies published from the United States, Canada, and Sweden, with one study stemming all the way back to 2001:
- The Canadian study was published by the American Association for Cancer Research in November 2001, with researchers finding that people who used glyphosate had higher chances of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This study lasted for 10 years, with researchers observing the long-term side effects of the pesticide.
- The United States study was published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, which concluded glyphosate and other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and had a strong association with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
- The Swedish study was published in the International Journal of Cancer in October 2008, which found that the risk of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis doubled after less than 10 years of glyphosate exposure.
Although these studies were recently brought into the spotlight, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suspected a link between glyphosate and cancer back in the 1980s. Researchers began examining the carcinogenic risks associated with glyphosate after noticing many farmers were diagnosed with non Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
For the past 40 years, glyphosate has been used as a weed killer and pesticide for commercial farmers and households across the United States. Approximately 250 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on crops, lawns, parks, nurseries, and golf courses, exposing numerous people on a daily basis.
This Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Lawsuit is Case No. 5:17-cv-00409-JMH, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky.
