Thousands File a Monsanto Cancer Lawsuit Including an Arizona ResidentA man who recently developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using the company’s popular weed killer, Roundup, filed a Monsanto cancer lawsuit joining thousands of others.

Plaintiff Robert L. filed the Monsanto cancer lawsuit in Arizona federal court demanding jury trial. The lawsuit was filed on July 18, 2018.

According to the Monsanto cancer lawsuit, Robert is a resident and citizen of the state of Arizona.

He says that he was exposed to Roundup in Auburn, Mass. from around 1974 through 1976, and says that he also used the product between 1976 and 2017 in Phoenix. He was later diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in March 2014.

Overview: Filing a Monsanto Cancer Lawsuit

Popular weed killer Roundup, developed by Monsanto, has been extensively used by gardeners, homeowners, and farmers in over 160 countries since its introduction in the 1970s. However, lawsuits allege the company of falsely advertising Roundup’s safety. In fact, in August 2018, a jury for the Superior Court of California ordered the company to pay $289 million to a man because of Roundup’s role in his development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The man at the center of the California Monsanto lawsuit is Dewayne J., a former groundskeeper for a California county school system. After using the Roundup weed killer as many as 30 times per year, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He says that on more than one occasion he had substantial amounts of the Roundup chemical spilled on his body.

It was in January 2016 that he filed a Monsanto cancer lawsuit against the company, arguing that the product significantly contributed to his cancer development. He also filed the lawsuit through a fast-track system because of his diagnosis with a terminal cancer. Prior to the verdict, the case took two and a half years and revolved around the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) classification of the product’s main ingredient, glyphosate, as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

The San Francisco jury trial awarded Dewayne $289 million ($39 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages) on Aug. 10, 2018. However, Monsanto continues to claim the safety of its product, making it likely that the company will appeal the case with the aim of severely decreasing the award and toss out the verdict.

Lawsuits being filed against the company accuse them of failing to warn of risks associated with Roundup exposure. Despite cases and evidence highlighting the product’s dangers, Monsanto continues to adamantly refuse and deny its any risks.

Cancers associated with Roundup include the following:

  • Bone cancer
  • B-cell lymphoma
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Leukemia
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer)
  • Other cancers

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer the begins in the body’s lymphocytes. These are the white blood cells of the body that help fight off diseases and infections as part of the body’s immune system.

Signs and symptoms of the development of the Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma may include a swollen belly, chest pain or pressure, weight loss, fever, anemia, enlarged lymph nodes, and shortness of breath or cough.

The Monsanto Cancer Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-02272-JZB, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.
