Mirena IUD birth control lawsuitTexas plaintiff Alyson C. is suing Bayer Pharmaceuticals for the injuries she allegedly suffered from using the Bayer contraceptive Mirena IUD. Alyson claims she developed non-cancerous cysts inside her ovaries and had to undergo to surgery to remove them as a result of using Mirena.

The plaintiff alleges in the Mirena lawsuit that she chose the IUD as her primary choice of birth control for its conveniences and longevity. The product had been inserted into her by her physician in February 2009 and was properly placed inside her uterus, according to the Mirena lawsuit. Ideally, the plaintiff could use the reportedly hassle-free birth control method for up to five years.

This allegedly did not end up being the case for Alyson as the IUD had to be removed after she started experiencing painful side effects. The Mirena lawsuit says the IUD initially worked well for the plaintiff but she started feeling pain in October 2012 and had to undergo various medical testing by her physician to identify the problem. She was officially diagnosed on Dec. 12, 2012 with the formation of two ovarian cysts, one on each ovary, after she underwent medical digital imaging, the Mirena lawsuit alleges.

Luckily, permanent damage was avoided for the plaintiff as the Mirena IUD was removed the day the cysts were discovered and had the cysts were eliminated soon after. However, her physician warned her that her ability to have a child may have become compromised due to the invasive surgery performed on her ovaries. So even if the plaintiff is no in danger, there is a strong possibility that her life has been permanently compromised, according to the Mirena lawsuit.

After learning of the various potential side effects of Mirena, which included the development of non-cancerous cysts, Alyson filed this product liability lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals. As the manufacturer of the device, the plaintiff states that the company was directly responsible for her injuries because they failed to warn her of these potential Mirena IUD complications.

Additionally, her lawyers claim that the company had the civil duty of warning their client and the general public of these potential Mirena IUD complications because they rely on the given information provided with the product. Alyson states that she never would have used the Mirena IUD if she had known about the possibility of ovarian cyst formation.

So for being allegedly responsible for manufacturing, selling, distributing, and marketing an allegedly dangerous product, Alyson is suing Bayer Pharmaceuticals. The charges include: negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product.

This Mirena IUD lawsuit is Case No. 3:14-cv-01088-DRH-DGW, in the U.S. District Court of Southern Illinois.

Overview of Mirena IUD Complications

Hundreds of Mirena lawsuits have been filed by women across the country alleging the IUD caused serious and painful complications.

The Mirena IUD is a t-shaped intrauterine device that is directly inserted into the woman’s uterus and is designed to last up to five years. When the IUD is inserted, it releases a synthetic progestin hormone called levonorgestrel that prevents sperm-to-egg fertilization.  Healthcare providers often only prescribe this device to women who have already had one child due to the fact that doctors do not know how the IUD affects unborn children.

Mirena was approved by the FDA in December 2000 and is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals. Since its release, over 2 million women in the United States have chosen Mirena as their birth control method, and it is used by 15 million women worldwide.

Despite its popularity, numerous injury reports have been submitted that indicate the IUD can cause a variety of problems for users. The main problem reported by women is that Mirena can allegedly unexpectedly perforate and migrate from the uterus and embed itself into a different part of the woman’s abdomen.

This gives way for cramping, pain, bleeding, unexpected pregnancies, and ectopic pregnancies in the most extreme cases. Some women who become pregnant after the IUD is removed report that their pregnancies developed abnormally as an alleged result of Mirena side effects.

Bayer has been repeatedly criticized for understating these adverse Mirena side effects and for allegedly deliberately concealing vital safety information from consumers. Women who file a Mirena lawsuit are seeking compensation for this alleged negligence and for damages associated with pain, suffering and medical expenses related to Mirena complications.

  1. Krista Farrar says:

I was on birth control for 12 years, but didn’t start to get ovarian cysts till 2022. I was on the birth control pills from 2010-2016. I had no issues with the birth control pills. I was recommended by a friend to get on depo-provera, so that I didn’t have to worry about missing a dose with the Birth control pills. When I asked my doctor in 2016, she told me I wouldn’t have any complications while on the depo-provera. I didn’t start to have issues until 2022 while on depo-Provera. I was in a lot of pain and rushed to the hospital because I had intense pain coming from my left side. The doctor told me I had a cyst on my left ovary, but measured at 1.6cms. I asked the doctor what has caused me to get the ovarian cysts and he told me menstrual cycles. He gave me pain medication and sent me home. My symptoms started worsening for 2 more years after that. I decided to research up on the depo-Provera to see if they caused cysts and the results I got was yes. I reached out to my doctor about getting on a different type of birth control that would prevent me from not getting Ovarian cysts. She said the Mirena IUD would prevent me from not getting ovarian cysts. I got the IUD put in, but not long after that, I started to get multiple cysts on both sides of my ovaries. I eventually again researched on Mirena IUD to see if I would get ovarian cysts and it said yes. There has been countless times that I’ve went to the hospital because of the intense pain coming from both sides and finding out I have cysts on my ovaries. When questioning doctors, they will always tell me that birth control doesn’t have nothing to do with getting cysts on ovaries. They just told me to rest and to take pain relievers for the pain. Back in 2024, the Mirena IUD fell out. I told my doctor about it and she asked if I wanted to get back another one out in. I told her no because I keep getting cysts on my ovaries, but she said that the Mirena can cause cysts on ovaries, but it’s rare. I didn’t know what to think anymore. I’ve been getting ovarian cysts for 3 years straight. I currently have a 4.4cm cyst on my left ovary and it is required to get removed. I can’t bare the pain anymore. I can’t even work without having pain from the cysts on my ovaries. It’s been difficult to try for another kid, due to these cysts. Every night, I’m always groaning in pain. I nonstop hop in the shower to see if the hot water will ease the pain a little and it does. I’m getting sick to my stomach every day. I can’t even sleep comfortably at night. The pain gets 10x worse when I get my menstrual cycle and I get massive blood clots. I can’t hardly walk without getting pain in my left side. I have forced myself to go to the store to get groceries while in pain. I’m having financial problems because I’m not able to work right now. I always turn down my friends when they want to hangout with me, because I’m in pain. I have a toddler who loves to run around and play, but it has made it difficult for me to do the same with him. Having all these issues is causing a lot of issues and the doctors can’t really do much about it. I’m tired of them saying they can’t do anything about it. I’m hoping someone will be able to help me out, because it’s causing a downfall on my life with not being able to work, due to having cysts for 3 years straight from being on Mirena IUD and the Depo-Provera.
