asbestos lung cancerMesothelioma is a known adverse side effect for some people who were exposed to asbestos at work or through other avenues. However, while the fibrous material often finds its way into the lungs, many people may not realize that asbestos exposure and scarring can lead to cancer in several other organs, as well. Negligent exposure to asbestos has led to billions of dollars in mesothelioma class action lawsuit settlements.

Mesothelioma develops in the pleura or lining of the lungs. The second most common type of mesothelioma is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. One-in-five patients with this type of cancer will see major problems with the lining of the abdomen. The warning signs are pain and swelling in that area. However, due to the compression on various organs from the peritoneal inflammation, there can also be symptoms that include nausea and diarrhea.

Much less likely, but still possible, are pericardial mesothelioma and testicular mesothelioma. Mesothelioma class action lawsuits and asbestos class action lawsuits note that just six percent of all diagnoses of mesothelioma affect the linings of the heart or the testicles. However, just as with those affecting the pleural lining of the lungs, irritation caused by asbestos exposure can lead to fluid buildup and then tumors.

Part of the difficulty with all types of mesothelioma except the testicular variant is that treatment can be very dangerous. Any radiation or other treatments for the lining can damage the cardiovascular system, so in many cases, this type of heart or lung cancer merely receive pain relief aids and similar care.

Since about 80 percent of all mesothelioma patients will be diagnosed with tumors in those areas, the prognosis is poor with very low survival rates.

That is one reason why patients who have developed cancer as a result of asbestos exposure may want to consider legal action. Billions of dollars have been set aside in trust funds by numerous companies, including many of those linked with the most extensive use of asbestos that was commonly used as insulation and in similar applications. Millions of dollars in unclaimed mesothelioma class action settlements are set aside and waiting to be paid out to mesothelioma victims and their families.

In general, asbestos mesothelioma lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
