A widely used heartburn medication, Nexium, has been pinpointed in a new Nexium lawsuit by a plaintiff who claims that he suffered from adverse reactions as a result of this PPI med.

According to his Nexium lawsuit, plaintiff Robert G., of Virginia, claims that Nexium causes kidney disease. Robert allegedly took Nexium from 2012 through 2016. In addition to claiming that Nexium causes kidney disease, Robert also alleges that Nexium caused his end-stage renal disease as well as the need for dialysis.

In this Nexium lawsuit, Robert is bringing forth many claims including design defect, failure to warn, negligence, negligence per se, breach of express warranty, breach of implied warranty, negligent misrepresentation, fraud, fraudulent concealment and violation of the state consumer protection laws of the state of Virginia.

Robert’s Nexium lawsuit joins many others as part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL).

Nexium Causes Kidney Disease, Plaintiffs Claim

Robert’s Nexium lawsuit is not the only lawsuit that claims that Nexium causes kidney disease and other complications.

Nexium belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs. PPI medications help patients who have problems with too much acid in their stomachs. PPI medications help the stomach to stop producing too much acid. This helps those patients who suffer from acid reflux or ulcers.

Nexium and other proton pump inhibiting medication inhibit a system called the hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase enzyme system, otherwise known as the proton pump system. This stops certain cells from producing too much acid in the stomach.

However, research has connected Nexium and other PPI meds with both kidney disease and kidney problems, as well as stomach cancer. In fact, a recent study found that Nexium and PPI meds nearly double the risk of the incidence of stomach cancer.

Nexium lawsuit plaintiffs who claim that Nexium causes kidney disease allege that the drug is linked to kidney problems in recent studies. The increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease may be as high as 28 percent greater in those who take PPI meds like Nexium.

Other studies have found that PPI meds increase a patient’s risk of developing kidney failure by 96 percent.

Filing a Nexium Lawsuit

There are over 4,500 Nexium lawsuits in federal court as of June 2018. The number of plaintiffs filing a Nexium lawsuit due to chronic kidney disease, kidney failure or stomach cancer has risen almost 800 percent in the first half of 2018.

If you or someone you love has experienced chronic kidney disease, kidney failure or stomach cancer and believe it is due to Nexium use, you may be eligible to file a Nexium lawsuit. While legal compensation cannot take away the pain and suffering one may experience from chronic kidney disease, kidney failure or stomach cancer, it may help alleviate the costs of medical bills and lost wages.

This Nexium Lawsuit is Case No. Case 2:18-cv-11187 in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, Newark Division.

In general, acid reflux medication lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
