Two Louisiana farmers filed a lawsuit against Syngenta alleging the company falsely advertised its corn, falsely represented China’s approval status of the Vipetra corn, contaminated the corn supply, and interfered with their business relationships.
They assert Syngenta was negligent and its contamination of the corn supply with its Viptera, or MIR 162 corn, constituted a public nuisance.
Farmers Cason D. and Charles T. request an entry of judgment for all of the allegations (fraud, negligence and product liability), monetary damages exceeding $75,000, prejudgment interest, costs of litigation and any further relief deemed proper by the court.
The Syngenta Corn Lawsuit is Case No. 3:15-cv-02369 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, Monroe Division.
What Is GMO Corn?
GMO (genetically modified organism) has been genetically engineered from its original state. Scientists alter the DNA in corn to produce desirable traits including resistance to pests and herbicides.
There is controversy about the safety of genetically modified food. Those who question the safety assert that there are no long-term studies to support the safety of eating foods that have man-made proteins and how this interacts with our body and our own DNA.
Several countries have banned GMO crops. They include Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, France, Austria and Ireland.
Other countries have partial bans on genetically modified crops, and some ban the growth and import of GMOs. Many countries require special labeling of GMOs.
The U.S. has many GMO crops, with corn and soy being two of the largest. In 2014, the United States banned GMOs in all wildlife refuges, though the Fish and Wildlife Service did not give a clear reason why such a ban was made.
