LG washing machine defectA recent class action alleges that LG washer rust plagues the high end washing machines and results in ruined clothes.

Three plaintiffs allege that LG Electronics USA Inc. knowingly sells defective washing machines which rust prematurely.

According to the LG class action, the LG washer rust stems from a manufacturing defect associated with the top loading washers’ tops.

The tops are allegedly defective and begin to rust within months or a few years of purchase. The plaintiffs say that considering that expensive appliances such as washing machines typically last at least 10 years, the short time it takes for rust to plague these LG washers is significant.

The LG washer class action claims that the rust starts around the bleach dispenser on the washing machine top. The bleach dispenser is a plastic insert which fits into the metal top of the washer. Plaintiffs allege that the metal tops are poorly sealed which leads to the leakage of water and formation of rust.

According to the LG washing machine class action, the rust is not only an eyesore, it can destroy clothing put into the washer for cleaning. This compromises the washer’s ordinary purpose, meaning that consumers are allegedly not getting what they paid for.

“Once it begins, the rust inevitably spreads throughout the top of the washer to the point that rust seeps into the laundry bin and stains clothing during the wash cycle,” the LG washer rust class action lawsuit states.

Plaintiffs argue that LG should have foreseen that washer tops, which are subject to “wet, humid conditions,” may be more prone to rusting.

The LG washer class action further claims that instead of properly sealing the washing machine for foreseeable circumstances, LG manufactured the washer tops carelessly and defectively.

Despite manufacturing a defective product, LG representatives allegedly deny the issue and place the blame on consumers. The plaintiffs say the company denies warranty claims for LG washer rust, calling the problem “cosmetic” or blaming it on inadequate care by the consumer.

The LG washer rust class action rejects these arguments, maintaining that the defect is more than cosmetic and in fact prevents the appliance from working as intended.

The LG washing machine class action also argues that the defect is due to poor material choices and manufacturing, so no amount of customer care could have prevented rusting.

“Despite LG’s admonitions, upon information and belief, the rust develops regardless of overflow or spill of bleach or detergent because of the nature of the defect,” the LG washer rust class action claims. “No amount of maintenance, cleaning, or non-spilling, or wiping away of detergents would prevent the Defect.”

The plaintiffs as a group aim to represent a Class of consumers who purchased LG top loading washers since 2012. Individual plaintiffs also seek to represent two subclasses for California and Missouri consumers, respectively.

The LG washing machine rust class action lawsuit seeks actual damages, special damages, incidental damages, statutory damages, punitive damages, other damages, restitution, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

Plaintiffs are represented by Timothy N. Mathews, Benjamin F. Johns, and Zachary P. Beatty of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP.

The LG Washer Premature Rusting Class Action Lawsuit is Acosta, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:18-cv-15584, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

  1. Melissa Gauthier says:

My LG washer WT5480CW started rusting less than a year after I purchased it. It started next to the soap dispenser tray. I called LG and they would do nothing, as they said it was cosmetic. Now years later, the rust is clear across the inside top, above the soap dispenser and coming out from behind the lid to the exterior. It is now dropping metal chunks and rust into my machine. We now have to replace it. I will NEVER buy LG products again. They do not stand behind them.

  2. Denise Thompson says:

My LG Washer is corroded with rust near the detergent tray, and is ruining our clothes.

    1. Deborah sanders says:

I have had the same problem

    2. Melissa Gauthier says:

Mine started rusting from the inside out there also, right by the little blue circle thing…LG said it was cosmetic and now 4 yrs later it’s across the whole back , under the lid and above the soap dispenser…dropping rust into my machine…I will NEVER BUY LG products again!

  3. Michael Baria says:

We have a top load LG washer and as others have stated that it is rusting terrible after 2 years around the top inside of the frame where the detergent additives go. We never use the additive trays and it has rusted to the point we are afraid to use the washing machine.. Can’t believe they continue to sell this product knowing that it will rust out like this. What steps need to be taken to get all of these recalled or replaced at manufactures expense.

    1. Ronda says:

      We have the same problem

    2. Melissa Gauthier says:

Same exact problem and LG would do nothing about it

  4. Dissapointed says:

I’ve sent back 2 brand new turbowash washing machines because of rust in the drum! Came brand new from the manufacturer with rust around the perimeter seam where the drum wall meets the impeller bottom. Absolutely ridiculous.

  5. CR Barragan says:

We have a matching LG top load washer and dryer. The rust dispenser is very rusted. We seldom use bleach. Eye sore and rust spreads to clothes. LG should replace the top cover or consider a monetary compensation.

  6. Rachel says:

Also rusty bleach trap made the interior tray fall and water leak all over floors

    1. Linda Hollingsworth says:

That certainly is the problem with my LG model WT497OCW.

      1. Quezon Viloria says:

Our LG top load washer’ s dispenser has corroded to really bad. Chunks of thin parts chipping into the wash causing rust stains. Can’t afford to replace it. We are on fixed income. Will the company replace or have parts repaired? Help.

  7. Debra Smith says:

I have the same issue … the top edge of the inside of my washer is rusted … only 3 yrs old
Warranty does not cover rust I’m told.

  8. Sessions says:

Like most appliance manufactures, LG top loaders have a stamped out standard market grade sheet metal top cover. Any stamped edge of that cover is not going to resist moisture and is going to rust, period. Factory applied paint on stamped metal is thinner on edges. All edges. No tech excuse is going to fix that. Its all about the money you spend on the appliance versus the time it takes to rust. It’s apparent that LG considers a few years acceptable. What a shame that they didn’t consider a stainless steel top cover to match their “NeveRust” drum. My bet is that they did.

  9. Elizabeth Geloso says:

I have a severe rust issue with my washer!

  10. Karen Shallcross says:

I have LG washer and ThinQ and just ruined expensive clothes from rust. Ad me too warranty ran out 8/26/22

    1. Sharon Brown says:

I have the same issue. I dismissed the rust as cosmetic over the year but now it is crumbling and depositing rust stains and pieces on my clothes and inside the washer bin. It’s no longer under warranty but I noticed the rust very soon after I bought the unit.
