LG washing machine defectA recent class action alleges that LG washer rust plagues the high end washing machines and results in ruined clothes.

Three plaintiffs allege that LG Electronics USA Inc. knowingly sells defective washing machines which rust prematurely.

According to the LG class action, the LG washer rust stems from a manufacturing defect associated with the top loading washers’ tops.

The tops are allegedly defective and begin to rust within months or a few years of purchase. The plaintiffs say that considering that expensive appliances such as washing machines typically last at least 10 years, the short time it takes for rust to plague these LG washers is significant.

The LG washer class action claims that the rust starts around the bleach dispenser on the washing machine top. The bleach dispenser is a plastic insert which fits into the metal top of the washer. Plaintiffs allege that the metal tops are poorly sealed which leads to the leakage of water and formation of rust.

According to the LG washing machine class action, the rust is not only an eyesore, it can destroy clothing put into the washer for cleaning. This compromises the washer’s ordinary purpose, meaning that consumers are allegedly not getting what they paid for.

“Once it begins, the rust inevitably spreads throughout the top of the washer to the point that rust seeps into the laundry bin and stains clothing during the wash cycle,” the LG washer rust class action lawsuit states.

Plaintiffs argue that LG should have foreseen that washer tops, which are subject to “wet, humid conditions,” may be more prone to rusting.

The LG washer class action further claims that instead of properly sealing the washing machine for foreseeable circumstances, LG manufactured the washer tops carelessly and defectively.

Despite manufacturing a defective product, LG representatives allegedly deny the issue and place the blame on consumers. The plaintiffs say the company denies warranty claims for LG washer rust, calling the problem “cosmetic” or blaming it on inadequate care by the consumer.

The LG washer rust class action rejects these arguments, maintaining that the defect is more than cosmetic and in fact prevents the appliance from working as intended.

The LG washing machine class action also argues that the defect is due to poor material choices and manufacturing, so no amount of customer care could have prevented rusting.

“Despite LG’s admonitions, upon information and belief, the rust develops regardless of overflow or spill of bleach or detergent because of the nature of the defect,” the LG washer rust class action claims. “No amount of maintenance, cleaning, or non-spilling, or wiping away of detergents would prevent the Defect.”

The plaintiffs as a group aim to represent a Class of consumers who purchased LG top loading washers since 2012. Individual plaintiffs also seek to represent two subclasses for California and Missouri consumers, respectively.

The LG washing machine rust class action lawsuit seeks actual damages, special damages, incidental damages, statutory damages, punitive damages, other damages, restitution, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

Plaintiffs are represented by Timothy N. Mathews, Benjamin F. Johns, and Zachary P. Beatty of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP.

The LG Washer Premature Rusting Class Action Lawsuit is Acosta, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:18-cv-15584, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

  1. Mike says:

I bought my LG washer in 2014 and after approximately a year it started rusting around the bleach dispenser, I contacted HOME-DEPOT where we purchased it and was informed that I had to contact LG for the warranty service. I battled with LG associates for approximately 4 months and eventually had an appointment scheduled for a maintenance appointment. The technician came , inspected the rust and claimed that due to the fact that I lived in Florida it was the sea salt from the ocean that came into my garage bypassed my 2 refrigerators my clothes dryer and a floor food freezer and rusted my LG washing machine. I should have sent a complaint to the better business bureau but at that point I just gave up. I logged on today just to see if there are still complaints and was not surprised at all. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER LG PRODUCT !!!!!! BUYER BEWARE

We also have a LG washer and dryer.LG used to be the top of the line.My washer is rusting real bad around the bleach dispenser. Not very happy about this.LG should at least stand behind there product. Not a happier camper from Oklahoma.

I’d like to add myself to this group. I thought I had a unique problem. I would have added my name to the lawsuit but it looks like it was DISMISSED? I thought it was a manufacturing defect? How is that possible? Who paid off who? I never knew there were other complaints. Rust all over the bleach opening .. and the hingles. terrible. I also didn’t know this washer ‘sensed’ and put water to match the clothes based on the weight. But that doesn’t work either as clothes don’t get clean in 1/2 inch of water.

  4. Lisa Jarema says:

We are absolutely disgusted with how our LG machine rusted. We will not buy another machine from LG. Their ratings on CR are all very good, which is perplexing, but we will not buy another LG appliance. They are all plagued with poor performance.

  5. Holly A Heuss Elledge says:

My LG washer (purchase date Dec 2016) is rusting out as well. I first noticed the rust around the hinges to the top loader’s door, but continued to use it knowing that one day I’d need a replacement. Today as I was opening the softener dispenser, a big chunk of rust fell into the softener dispenser and down into the drum on my clothing items. No problems with my dryer, thank goodness. So, I am off to purchase that afore mentioned replacement. I really thought I’d get a good 10 years out of this thing.

I am sooo disappointed in my LG Washer & Dryer! I paid more then $1,100 for each of them and thought I was buying quality, top of the line appliances at that price! My washer is rusting uncontrollably as stated in other comments from buyers and rust is seeping into my washer and ruining my clothes!
My dryer…. Which is why I came to this site in the first place….. ruins all my towels! I couldn’t imagine why every brand new towel would come out of the dryer with a million pulls! At first I thought it was the quality of the towels and kept buying new towels…until finally after replacing more then 20 towels I found out online many complaints about LG Dryers that snag the clothing while drying. I felt all around the inside of my dryer but could not pinpoint where this was happening. All my towels look like rags at this point! ☹️ I’m so disappointed in LG. There was a time I thought LG products were the best but not anymore. I will avoid buying anything LG in the future! BUYER BEWARE!

  10. Mimosa Louise McNerney says:

Same problem. Rust and corrosion Māori d bleach dispenser. The rust has spread underneath and now water is leaking out of the bottom of the machine . I can see rust on the inside walls and the top of the drum. Chunks of rusted material drops into the drum. How is there not a recall our lawsuit for this. ‘My machine is destroyed and water all over my floor everytime I go to wash something . I need a new machine and would like to stay with LG (matching dryer), but so t know if LG has fixed the problem on newer machines. Such a huge waste of money!!
