A recent class action alleges that LG washer rust plagues the high end washing machines and results in ruined clothes.
Three plaintiffs allege that LG Electronics USA Inc. knowingly sells defective washing machines which rust prematurely.
According to the LG class action, the LG washer rust stems from a manufacturing defect associated with the top loading washers’ tops.
The tops are allegedly defective and begin to rust within months or a few years of purchase. The plaintiffs say that considering that expensive appliances such as washing machines typically last at least 10 years, the short time it takes for rust to plague these LG washers is significant.
The LG washer class action claims that the rust starts around the bleach dispenser on the washing machine top. The bleach dispenser is a plastic insert which fits into the metal top of the washer. Plaintiffs allege that the metal tops are poorly sealed which leads to the leakage of water and formation of rust.
According to the LG washing machine class action, the rust is not only an eyesore, it can destroy clothing put into the washer for cleaning. This compromises the washer’s ordinary purpose, meaning that consumers are allegedly not getting what they paid for.
“Once it begins, the rust inevitably spreads throughout the top of the washer to the point that rust seeps into the laundry bin and stains clothing during the wash cycle,” the LG washer rust class action lawsuit states.
Plaintiffs argue that LG should have foreseen that washer tops, which are subject to “wet, humid conditions,” may be more prone to rusting.
The LG washer class action further claims that instead of properly sealing the washing machine for foreseeable circumstances, LG manufactured the washer tops carelessly and defectively.
Despite manufacturing a defective product, LG representatives allegedly deny the issue and place the blame on consumers. The plaintiffs say the company denies warranty claims for LG washer rust, calling the problem “cosmetic” or blaming it on inadequate care by the consumer.
The LG washer rust class action rejects these arguments, maintaining that the defect is more than cosmetic and in fact prevents the appliance from working as intended.
The LG washing machine class action also argues that the defect is due to poor material choices and manufacturing, so no amount of customer care could have prevented rusting.
“Despite LG’s admonitions, upon information and belief, the rust develops regardless of overflow or spill of bleach or detergent because of the nature of the defect,” the LG washer rust class action claims. “No amount of maintenance, cleaning, or non-spilling, or wiping away of detergents would prevent the Defect.”
The plaintiffs as a group aim to represent a Class of consumers who purchased LG top loading washers since 2012. Individual plaintiffs also seek to represent two subclasses for California and Missouri consumers, respectively.
The LG washing machine rust class action lawsuit seeks actual damages, special damages, incidental damages, statutory damages, punitive damages, other damages, restitution, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.
Plaintiffs are represented by Timothy N. Mathews, Benjamin F. Johns, and Zachary P. Beatty of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP.
The LG Washer Premature Rusting Class Action Lawsuit is Acosta, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:18-cv-15584, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

I purchased a LG Washer, top load, in July 2012 and within a year the rust started around the bleach dispenser. The washer was purchased at Home Depot with an extended warranty. Home Depot would not cover it and referred us to LG. LG actually came to my home to look at the washer and claimed it to be cosmetic. Now the rust is spreading.
How do I join the Law Suit?
I don’t know how to join but I’d sure like to…mine is doing the same thing!
Put me on board we have one of these rusty washers as well almost new machine Ill never buy and Lg product again not to mention its balance issue and likes to destroy other things
I purchased a new LG washer and dryer in 2014. My washer is a top load, True Balance, Top of the line appliance. A little more than a year later, I noticed rust around the bleach dispenser area. When I contacted LG I was told there did not warrant the product for rust and that I was out of warranty. Now I see that this is a standard problem with the LG washers. Surely a washing machine should last more than 5 years? I previously had a Maytag that was 20 years old…it never leaked or required any service and it had no rust on it when I gave it to a family that needed a washer and dryer. Now I have discovered that the washing machine is leaking from the bottom of the machine and soaking my tile floor in the laundry room. I would like to file a claim on this machine. What do I need to do? LG is not a reliable appliance and they will not take care of the problem. Please help.
I would also like to learn more about this class action. My machine also started rusting at the bleach dispenser and is now rusting all around the top of the machine.
So I am a nurse and I purchased over $500 in white uniforms at the uniform store put them in my LG washer top load and sure enough rest spots on every single white uniform running everything I didn’t attribute it to the bleach dispenser I thought it was from the water heater plumbing or some other issue and now after it’s probably been a year I put it together by looking in googling and seeing other people with these issues and now the bleach dispenser literally collapsed and my washer is just slightly over seven years and LG won’t stand behind it they said it’s only a year parts and service unless I pay For a technician to come out plus they have to have $125 upfront so I told him no I’ll join a class action lawsuit this is a common issue I’ve had washers last beyond 15 years so I’m never purchase another LG washer and now I can’t even use it because the dispenser collapsed and it’s blocking the top
I would like to file a claim with the class action law suit for my LG washer machine. My washer rusted around the bleach dispenser it ruins our clothes, the bleach drains into the side of the washer before the washer starts and stain the wash.
My washer is doing the same rusting issue, its less then 2 years old. I first noticed it around the top ring about the tub, an dafter seeing a tv news report on the LG washers bleach dispenser, I pulled the plastic dispenser out and it is starting to rust under the plastic dispenser also. Can I join your class action law suit? Or have you had any results getting LG to replace the tops?
They told me it was cosmetic issue and not covered.
