Rear View Of Young Woman Looking In Fridge At KitchenA California woman says LG needs to take responsibility for defective ice and temperature control systems in its LG refrigerators.

Plaintiff Cynthia Kao says the ice-making system and cooling control system in her LG refrigerator both fail to do what they’re supposed to. Defects in these systems cause food to spoil and ice to melt and leak, she alleges.

She is holding defendant LG Electronics USA Inc. responsible for fixing these alleged defects in accordance with the LG refrigerator warranty, on her own behalf and that of proposed Class Members.

Kao says that in September 2014, she bought an LG refrigerator, model number LFX31945ST.

She says she bought that particular refrigerator in part because of two features: the Slim SpacePlus ice system, which opened up more storage space inside the refrigerator by putting the ice maker components inside the refrigerator door; and the Smart Cooling Plus system, which would provide temperature and humidity control in different zones within the fridge, each of which was purportedly optimized to keep a particular type of food fresh.

Within a year of purchasing her LG refrigerator, Kao says, it began to show various error messages. Sometimes it would simply stop working, she says. To fix this problem, an LG representative allegedly told her to restart the refrigerator’s computer by unplugging the refrigerator for 15 minutes.

Sometimes, Kao claims, she had to go through this unplugging cycle several times in a row to reset the refrigerator. Meanwhile, she says, the ice system inside the refrigerator door shut down, and ice melted and leaked onto her kitchen floor.

On other occasions, Kao says, the ice system would clog with ice, causing it to stop working. Kao says an LG representative told her she would have to empty the ice tray once a day to prevent the system from clogging.

The Smart Cooling Plus system also failed to perform as advertised, according to Kao’s LG refrigerator class action lawsuit. She says the Smart Cooling Plus system failed to properly cool her food while the refrigerator was showing error messages, causing the food to spoil.

Other LG refrigerator owners have reported similar problems, Kao says. She quotes complaints found on LG’s website and on Amazon in which owners report ice makers jammed full of ice or allowed ice to melt. Others report their refrigerator or freezer fails to maintain the right temperature, causing food to spoil.

Replacing components of the refrigerator’s computer failed to fix the problem, according to some of these owners.

Kao proposes to represent six different plaintiff Classes, generally covering persons in the U.S. who purchased an LG refrigerator with either a Slim SpacePlus ice system or a Smart Cooling Plus System within the four years prior to the filing of her LG refrigerator class action lawsuit.

She seeks an award of compensatory, punitive and statutory damages, restitution, court costs and attorneys’ fees, plus an order barring LG from continuing the allegedly unlawful conduct complained of.

Kao is represented by attorneys Robert W. Thompson, Kathleen M. Hartman and Jimmy T. Nguyen of Callahan Thompson Sherman & Caudill LLP.

The LG Refrigerator Defective Ice and Temperature Systems Class Action Lawsuit is Cynthia Kao v. LG Electronics USA, Case No. 8:17-cv-01181, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Our 2 year old LG french door refrigerator stoped working. It was about 3k dollars and I cant believe it broke after only 2 years. LG really needs to stop selling defective fridges. HUGE disappointment.

It’s October 2018. We purchased a Sears, Kenmore Elite Refrigerator made by “LG” two years ago, October, 2016. It was difficult getting Sears to come diagnose the problem. They wanted us to wait 10 days for an appointment. AGAIN, I HAD TO FIGHT. They came the next day. Diagnosed that it was the COMPRESSOR!!!! We had the frig for 2 years. Never had this problem in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and part of the 2000’s. This all started happening in 2007 that appliances went downhill.. What is going on in the USA that our buyers are accepting these appliances from OVERSEAS that are defective??? We had to wait 7 days for a new compressor and then they had to use a TORCH to solder the copper pipes to it that came in the mail as 3 different packages. We purchased the extended warranty through October 2019. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE HEADACHE IF WE DIDN’T HAVE THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. SOMETHING HAS GO TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS. WE WANT SOME MONEY BACK FOR THE INCONVENIENCE AND STRESS. What happens if the new compressor breaks in the next 2 years. I want my warranty extended free of charge. though October 2020. HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THE NEW COMPRESSOR ISN’T A REFURBISHED ONE AND CAN BREAK AGAIN. Now I get to worry about a fire in my home. WE ARE NOT HAPPY.

Does this mean that our government will “bail out” Sears, Kenmore et. al.? I want my money back to buy a different brand.

        OUR MODEL # 795.73157.610

ALSO, MET SOMEONE IN THE MARKET THAT SAID HER “LG” REFRIGERATOR COMPRESSOR BROKE. SHE SAID THIS HAPPENED IN 2016. AND THEN ANOTHER PERSON TOO.

AND, I WAS INFORMED BY SEARS REPS THAT THE ICE MAKERS ON OUR MODEL IS A PROBLEM TOO. AS WELL AS THE COMPRESSOR.

2 years in and more problems again. Ice buildup in lower fan units. Living out of coolers again I during another hot humid summer. Thanks again l.g. for taking care of no one. How dissapointing.

Same here, 5 times in three years this piece of junk has failed!! So upset! Why are the class action lawsuits agai st LG being dismissed? WE ARE BEING ROBBED! 3rd service company is here now for the same compressor failure issue and he says he “doesn’t know if he can fix it!”??

  3. Trish Burgin says:

I have a 2 year old LG model LFXS29626S/01 that failed. Best Buy tech found a sealed system failure and compressor failure. No charge to diagnose but told we needed to call LG. After 3 hours and multiple calls we were forced to use the only “certified” technician in our area. They insisted on coming to diagnose and would not look until I wrote a check for $95. Called next day stating it was a compressor failure and it would be $785 minus the $95 I already paid. But of course the part is covered! After more research, we have decided to replace with a different fridge (NOT LG!) and will pursue other options including legal.

it appears as courts may be trying to conjoin the three registered class actions that have been filed against LG. MY concern that the Kenmore models Sears slapped their Kenmore Elite emblem on with get caught up in their bankruptcy filing. THis is way these type of cases take years to finally settle and without any regard to those that do not what do do about the hunk of junk refrigerator in their possession. it is my opinion that they are not repairable from my experience. Do not waste anymore money (or risk of losing more food) trying to fix it. LG/Sears still profits on selling parts.

  7. Jacalyn Ford says:

Ditto. How can I get my refrigerator fix?

  8. Lynne MacPherson says:

I too purchase the notorious LG LFX31925ST refrigerator in August 2012 and it worked for 2 years. First problem was the ice maker recalled which LG covered but it has been annual fall repair with it broken as I write. I am fighting with the CPS warranty company over what started as a noise issue with the duct fan and they said they do not cover noise, I explained that noise is indicative of a problem not just a nuisance but they rejected my claim and not the error code appear and it has stopped cooling. It always starts with a fan noise from the freezer to the refrigerator. This is a horrendous refrigerator and LG should be held accountable for selling expensive, unreliable junk.

  9. Lynn wilburn says:

I also purchased the largest and highest rated and featured 31 cf refrigerator and had the sealed system fail at 3 year point, prior to that the ice maker continually did same thing where it slightly thawed and caused the ice in the slim system to refreeze it into an unusable clump of ice and thus would require enormous effort to get out as the door would freeze shut and you couldn’t pull the bin out, so you had to try to break away ice to unjam it. Yes that was unbelievable $2500 plus tax and so I tolerated this because I liked the refrigerator. After cooling quit 3 years into it the attempt to get it serviced was not good, no on in area from LG willing or available, two authorized service trips replaced parts, then within a few weeks same thing failed again. Same service guy came back out and serviced it and pumped Freon into it patched. A year later same problem wouldn’t cool, lost all food and had to wait a long time to get anyone to come out. Weeks!! Finally a service person came out and pretty much redid what the previous service man did. Here we are another year later and again can’t get an LG factory tech and local serviceman told me that it was the sealed system and the compressor. Said they should have replaced it all right years previous. Now I am just about 1 year from being out of sealed system warranty and 3 years out of compressor warranty and this time I am told it will be $1,700 labor to put in the covered warranty parts. This is insane, it is more than half the cost of the refrigerator. This should be illegal or these products should not be sold here. I don’t care how pretty they look they don’t run as intended and their sales tactics are misleading and the warranty right on the refridgerator indicates 10 years compressor and 7 years on sealed system. This is so unfair to consumers to be treated this way. First the product should run and be fit for it’s purpose. No one pays that kind of crazy money for a cadillac that won’t run. Second, there are extremely limited service technicians to service the product. Wait time for service is awful. These manufacturers should not be permitted to falsely advertise these products as being so reliable and these wonderful cooling systems that keep your food at the right temperature, most reliable, 10 year warranty on compressor etc., then when the part fails anytime after the first year, a consumer is subject to a $1,700 labor to install a part that is required to make the item fit for it’s purpose. What happened to a product being fit for it’s purpose and should provide proper use for an extended or reasonable amount of time. We allow these items of such cheap manufacturer to be sold to consumers due to the excessive profit margins on these things and our landfills are full of them. They aren’t providing the service they claim and it is not cost effective to fix something and who really wants to even take a chance at repairing a product for another $1,700 and the warranted part that was supposed to be free is only good for 90 days, warranted for 90 days. And in LG’s case, they indicate they don’t even have to put in a new part! So I paid $2,600 and to fix it with a part that is guaranteed for 90 days I pay another $1,700, so this would be $4,300 into this refrigerator with no guarantee that it will run more than 90 more days. I would think that it would be a no brainer, get a new one, however when you go to purchase replacement, you are faced with the same ugly situation, all overpriced junk that is only guaranteed 1 year without facing an ugly labor expense, if you read the complaints most every brand is providing the same non quality products. Please help us to go after this problem and realize the impact on consumers and our landfills. Thanks in advance for allowing me to vent.

    10/4/2017
I purchased a 30.0 cubic ft. Stainless Steel model LFXS30766S French Door refrigerator on 7/19/2015 and a two year protection plan. I was originally told that the two year protection plan would start after the one year manufacturer warranty, so I would be protected for 3 years. Well, my refrigerator went out twice in the last 2 years two months and when I called the warranty company, they told me that my two year protection plan started at the date of purchase, instead of beginning at the end of the original one year manufacturer warranty.
After hearing that they wouldn’t help me, I called LG’s Corporate Office and they emailed me and told me that they would pay all labor costs for one of their contracted repair technicians to come out and fix the fridge.
I am wary about the repair because I have read countless stories about people getting their refrigerators repaired only to have it fail again shortly after the repair.
It is ridiculous that my GE side by side refrigerator that is now in my garage has lasted for 12 years but this LG refrigerator which is more than double the price has only lasted for 26 months. Help!!!
