Rear View Of Young Woman Looking In Fridge At KitchenA California woman says LG needs to take responsibility for defective ice and temperature control systems in its LG refrigerators.

Plaintiff Cynthia Kao says the ice-making system and cooling control system in her LG refrigerator both fail to do what they’re supposed to. Defects in these systems cause food to spoil and ice to melt and leak, she alleges.

She is holding defendant LG Electronics USA Inc. responsible for fixing these alleged defects in accordance with the LG refrigerator warranty, on her own behalf and that of proposed Class Members.

Kao says that in September 2014, she bought an LG refrigerator, model number LFX31945ST.

She says she bought that particular refrigerator in part because of two features: the Slim SpacePlus ice system, which opened up more storage space inside the refrigerator by putting the ice maker components inside the refrigerator door; and the Smart Cooling Plus system, which would provide temperature and humidity control in different zones within the fridge, each of which was purportedly optimized to keep a particular type of food fresh.

Within a year of purchasing her LG refrigerator, Kao says, it began to show various error messages. Sometimes it would simply stop working, she says. To fix this problem, an LG representative allegedly told her to restart the refrigerator’s computer by unplugging the refrigerator for 15 minutes.

Sometimes, Kao claims, she had to go through this unplugging cycle several times in a row to reset the refrigerator. Meanwhile, she says, the ice system inside the refrigerator door shut down, and ice melted and leaked onto her kitchen floor.

On other occasions, Kao says, the ice system would clog with ice, causing it to stop working. Kao says an LG representative told her she would have to empty the ice tray once a day to prevent the system from clogging.

The Smart Cooling Plus system also failed to perform as advertised, according to Kao’s LG refrigerator class action lawsuit. She says the Smart Cooling Plus system failed to properly cool her food while the refrigerator was showing error messages, causing the food to spoil.

Other LG refrigerator owners have reported similar problems, Kao says. She quotes complaints found on LG’s website and on Amazon in which owners report ice makers jammed full of ice or allowed ice to melt. Others report their refrigerator or freezer fails to maintain the right temperature, causing food to spoil.

Replacing components of the refrigerator’s computer failed to fix the problem, according to some of these owners.

Kao proposes to represent six different plaintiff Classes, generally covering persons in the U.S. who purchased an LG refrigerator with either a Slim SpacePlus ice system or a Smart Cooling Plus System within the four years prior to the filing of her LG refrigerator class action lawsuit.

She seeks an award of compensatory, punitive and statutory damages, restitution, court costs and attorneys’ fees, plus an order barring LG from continuing the allegedly unlawful conduct complained of.

Kao is represented by attorneys Robert W. Thompson, Kathleen M. Hartman and Jimmy T. Nguyen of Callahan Thompson Sherman & Caudill LLP.

The LG Refrigerator Defective Ice and Temperature Systems Class Action Lawsuit is Cynthia Kao v. LG Electronics USA, Case No. 8:17-cv-01181, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

AGREE, We have a new LG Fridge and as well have been using it since June2017 and have 3 different services on the ICE Maker and the freezer not freezing. It is the WORST fridge/freezer any person could PURCHASE. I hope LG does something about this problem since I we all understand, the ICE MAKER and FREEZER, is a faulty product.

  2. C. Sable says:

Purchased in November of 2014 and have made several service calls on my unit, only to have to replace it in August! In less than 3 years, the ice maker repaired then replaced, the condenser repaired then replaced, and finally a seal that couldn’t be fixed at all. Count me in on a class action suit!

How can I join this lawsuit?

  4. Deb says:

I also have an LG refrigerator that has ice cube problems and would not freeze the food, lots of melted ice cream and other food.

We have had to manually unclog the ice as well as try to goggle how to fix the temperature – calling LG reps is a joke. I need to be included in the case.

My LG fridge LMXC23746 stopped cooling after 15 months, just out of full warranty. It went on and off 3 times over 6 weeks – what a hassle! After 5 service calls on my extended warranty, Lowes gave up but now I am stuck with this fridge. I have sunk $500 into fixing it myself but now we think the compressed needs fixing. LG does not have any warranty service people in the entire North SF Bay Area – it is hard to get parts and they don’t pay their bills!!!
Something is definitely wrong here. I am looking for a class action lawsuit to join!

I have had similar problems with my LG refrigerator Model LMXC23746. After 15 months it stopped cooling. It went on and off 3 times over 6 weeks. After 5 service calls on my extended warranty, Lowes gave up and gave me my money back. What they didn’t tell me was it would cost me $1500 to have it picked up! So, I have replaced the control board and a relay but it still isn’t working. LG has no service companies that will work with them in the entire North SF Bay Area…and none that will service my area. Very few will even work on them at all without a warranty.
They are the worst. Retailers should not sell these things until they can improve their products and customer service.

I am wondering if I can join a class action lawsuit……

I have a LG refrigerator, it is now 6 years old. Between the ice maker and water dispenser it has been serviced 14 times !! Thank God I did the 5 year extended warranty. The ice maker still clogs up – I just live with it. Now the compressor went bad two weeks ago. They shipped one to my house!! When I pull up the service ticket on their web site they say it has been resolved!! I get no phone calls, emails, or text from anyone – every time I call they tell me something different. I am now looking for someone to come out and install the compressor!!! LG is a horrendous company for customer service, I will never buy another product by them and if my refrigerator breaks down again I am going to use it for target practice then ship it to them!!! How is it that this company can get away with such poor customer service -their should be some sort of regulatory commission that imposes fines for such poor service as they are going to continue to do this as long as they can get away with it.

  8. Jay Kobelin says:

Model LMXC 23746 has horrible temperature control. I have had compressor replaced and evaporator and condenser. The temperature is all over the place measuring with a meter with .75% accuracy…..that’s POINT 75 per cent. LG customer service atrocious. Part availability is ridiculous as I was told 3-4 weeks as no compressors were available…the heart of a refrigerator. How do I get on this train?

  9. Arlando Smith says:

We purchased an LG French Door Counter Depth refrigerator in August, 2015. We took delivery in October, 2017. In January of 2017, the freezer went out, twice. We paid for service calls for both visits, plus a third visit for the repair person to bring the correct part that had to be ordered. This past weekend, Sunday, September 3rd, the refrigerator completely died. We had to purchase a new refrigerator yesterday, obviously not an LG. Never again! We have a refrigerator in our garage, the one that was in our house that we moved to the garage when we bought the LG. The refrigerator in our garage is over 20 years old. While that refrigerator was in our house, we had another refrigerator in our garage that was well over 20 years old until we replaced it with the one currently in the garage. This Lg is not even two years old. Any refrigerator should last more than two years. Please allow us to be a part of this legal action.

  10. Kelly Constantine says:

I have an LG french door refrigerator, model LFXC24726S / 02 purchased in May 2015 that contains the smart cooling plus system. It is less than 3 years old and will not cool properly. LG cannot find a certified technician willing to repair the system. I’ve been bounced around on the phone for over 3 hours and 7+ customer services representatives, including supposed “supervisors”, until they resorted to the tactic of just placing me on hold until I am unwilling to wait any longer. Upon return call, I am placed on hold from the first representative. I can not get anywhere with them. I want to be included in this case.
