According to a class action lawsuit filed in an Illinois federal court, certain LG refrigerator models contain a defect which prevent them from sufficiently cooling food and beverages.

A group of plaintiffs recently filed the class action lawsuit against LG Electronics USA Inc. alleging that various LG refrigerator models contain a defect in the compressor which renders them unusable.

The LG refrigerator class action lawsuit notes that the compressor in an LG refrigerator plays a vital role in the cooling of food. By compressing gaseous refrigerant to increase its pressure and temperature, the compressor helps convert the refrigerant gas into a liquid. The liquid is then passed through coils in the refrigerator where it absorbs heat from the interior of the, turning it back into a gas and restarting the process.

According to LG class action, a manufacturing defect renders the compressors in certain LG refrigerator models defective. If the compressor does not work, the entire refrigeration process is disrupted, rendering the product useless, the plaintiffs allege.

“All Class Refrigerators suffer from the same Compressor Defect, which invariably causes the Class Refrigerators to cease cooling and/or freezing food,” the LG refrigerator class action claims. “Therefore, the Compressor Defect renders the Class Refrigerators useless and unfit for their intended purpose of cooling and freezing food.”

Plaintiffs claim that they were forced to pay hundreds of dollars to have the LG refrigerator defect repaired, including parts of labor costs. Additionally, they sustained financial damage from the spoiled food resulting from the alleged defect.

The LG class action also claims that LG is well aware of the widespread nature of the compressor defect. Numerous consumers have left reviews on websites which detail the problem, which the plaintiffs say LG is aware of or should have been aware of.

One review referenced in the LG refrigerator defect class action says “we had our [LG refrigerator] less than 6 months and compressor went out! We are an older couple and had to go without a Fridge for 25 days last August with heat being in the 90’s! My Husband is a disabled Vietnam Vet and we live on his disability pay! LG sucks wish we had known what garbage there products was before we saved up to buy it!”

The plaintiffs seek to represent a Class of consumers who purchased one or more of the LG refrigerator products in question.

Should their primary proposed Class not be certified, they alternatively seek to represent numerous subclasses of consumers in Illinois, California, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Ohio who are protected under their respective state consumer protection laws.

The LG refrigerator class action lawsuit seeks actual, general, special, treble, incidental, statutory, and consequential damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

Plaintiffs are represented by Katrina Carroll, Kyle A. Shamberg, Bruce D. Greenberg, and Susana Cruz Hodge of Lite DePalma Greenberg LLC; and Joseph G. Sauder, Matthew D. Schelkopf, and Joseph B. Kenney of Sauder Schelkopf LLC.

The LG Refrigerator Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Jackson, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 1:18-cv-06746, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

My LG Refrigerator is a nightmare! I have essentially been without a working refrigerator for over 3 months!!! I have called LG representatives more than 6 times. They continually give me the runaround and I am beside myself!!

Our beautiful 8 year old stainless steel with water and ice in the door has never worked properly. We’ve never been able to use the ice maker the way it was intended. Design flaw.
A couple of weeks ago I noticed freezer items didn’t seem frozen solid. Last week everything thawed. We called a repair service who explained that it is a LG compressor that fails, even the replacement compressors fail. When asked whether we should repair he adamantly said no. The same thing would happen with a new compressor. The fridge was also not cooling properly. I moved everything I could salvage to our 20+ year old Maytag in the garage.

We’ve been advised by others and the repairman not to buy lg to replace it. Don’t worry, lg was already off our list!

We went to Best Buy outlet and for $1200 bought a smaller KitchenAid that does not have ice and water in the door. Ice is in the freezer and water is just inside on the wall. Good enough for us!

I want to join this class action against lg mainly to send a message that we are done with your trash. We have lg washer and dryer that has been ok but we will NOT replace with lg. Our next stove also will NOT be lg.

Hoping lg gets the message we are DONE with lg.

We have a LG model LFX31925St refrigerator it still has never made to our brand new kitchen. We left it in the garage and it still has the bottom of the shipping material under it that it came with. The film is still on the front panels of the fridge to protect the finish. We bought it prior to the kitchen cabinets being done because we thought we got a deal from Home Depot. Well it was a hot summer so I plugged it in and it never worked right. Ice maker jam ,noisy and never cooled right. Within 8 month the compressor quit. Good thing we bought extended warranty because ever 8 to 10 month after that the compressor had to be replaced. We put 4 compressor on this fridge always resulting with a compressor failure. Finally our warranty ran out so LG wanted us to pay them to service it at a cost of 300 dollars. They would warranty the compressor because it has a one year factory warranty but not labor. So now we use it to cool drinks and make ice but jams up. I have to unplug it a couple times a month because the fan hits the ice build up in the freezer. It to bad big business especially foreign country have enough clout to sell this faulty equipment and get away with it. I have been patiently waiting for a class action lawsuit that will release us of this fault equipment

I have the same model number and had it 5 months and 22 days and the mother board went out and sears sent repair person out well as today I found out not only did they replace the mother board but the fan and some other major part went out ! Since then we’ve had all kind of ice maker problems and water leaking and freezing under veg drawer plus the plastic breaks inside well our beautiful LG stainless big refrigerator kept making a loud noise and my husband kept telling me he was hearing something in the kitchen and I thought he was hearing things cause I never heard it, until one night I heard a loud noise about 2 am in the morning and I thought someone had shot out side! Well on March 25 ,2019 our beautiful LG refrigerator made the noise again and it was the compressor so I looked and the ice trays I had to put in the freezer part was water and no ice then the food was soft well next morning everything was hot in the top of refrigerator! So I called LG and they don’t want to help I told them they be out of business cause no one that I know will pay 3200.00 for six years of nothing but troubles! The men that delivered our refrigerator told us to put extended warranty and I did twice and after five years the extended warranty was so expensive I cannot afford to pay for it! So disappointed! ILL NEVER BUY NOTHING LG!

I have a LG refrigerator that is only 3 years old! All of the sudden it just quit! Yes dealing with China when you call LG…

I have been without a refrigerator for A MONTH!!!!!!! From March 1 to today April 10th 2019 – as of today I have had 6 visits from the A&E technicians, LG has sent and it still doesn’t work!

    – They have replaced every part Possible.

    – LG says their HIRED tech have to say its not fixable – Which are HIRED by LG! Its a total consumer racket and of course we the little guys are the losers. I paid $2500 for this refrigerator!

What can we do as consumers to make these BIG companies own up to there BAD products!!!!!!! I will never buy a LG product every again and I will spread the word to all I can not to.

I just want a refrigerator that is reliable and works!

  5. Denny and Leigh Karchner, New Port Richey, FL says:

Purchased our LG French 5-door 30 cu/ft in September, 2016 after shopping for it for over 2 years. We finally decided on this model and size because of the nice features and since it was 20% off, we jumped in expecting our $2900 refrigerator to last us at least another 10-15 years as the previous Maytag had. We absolutely love this refrigerator because it has the room, lighting, and features both me and my husband wanted. The first year or so everything worked great until we returned from a 3-month vacation last summer to discover that it wasn’t cooling efficiently any longer and the ice maker suddenly stopped working. After numerous attempts to reset the icemaker, we called LG to see what else could be done. Initially, they were resistant to even advise what to try because the unit was already out of the year warranty. Ultimately, I expressed concerns over the issues I had read about our same model in online reviews and that the known issues with cooling at or around the 2-year mark seem to be a common denominator with this unit. The LG rep reluctantly admitted that because this was a known issue, they would send a tech out to evaluate and fix the refrigerator for us that time at no charge as a “courtesy.” An LG service repair person came out November 15th, 2018 and checked for coolant leaks and found nothing. He stated then that all the LGs are experiencing similar issues and asked us if we kept our home above 80 degrees and stated that all the LG models require cool room air temps to function properly. None of that should have been an issue or the cause. The coolant pressure was still good so it didn’t appear to have a leak that caused the lack of cooling. He then suggested it might be a motherboard issue causing the problems but said that he was prepared only to replace the compressor and coolant for that visit. The technician then extracted all the coolant, replaced the compressor (welded all new lines), checked for leaks again, and then recharged the unit back to factory standards. Once that was completed, he again checked for leaks and didn’t find any. The whole process took over 4 hours, including the drying process to make sure the correct coolant pressure was re-introduced. Forward to less than four months later, just as we were preparing for a party at our house this past Saturday night for 50+ guests, we noticed the night before the party that once again, the ice maker had stopped making ice. Again, we tried the reset option, to no avail. We also noticed that the internal temp of the fridge had shot up about 5 degrees. By the next morning, the temp was 50 degrees so we immediately began disposing of anything concerning and moved all remaining food that we felt was salvageable to coolers with ice. We even moved many items to our upright freezer in our garage for safe keeping on the lowest setting (warmest) in hopes to get us through the party and the weekend until we could arrange for a service tech to come out. The first phone call to LG CS resulted in us being told there weren’t any techs in the area that had openings. I explained that we had just survived a party of 50+ guests and had to send many of them home with food that we could not keep nor refrigerate because this $3000 refrigerator had puked out on us for the second time in less than 4 months. He reluctantly arranged for a private company 35 miles away to do the assessment and repairs. When that company called us, they said it would be at least 10 days before they could even come out to assess the issue and would be another week or so (if they could determine the problem) before any repairs could be made. The person that called I could just tell really did not want to even come out to look at this LG nightmare. He kept insisting he didn’t have any openings any earlier than 10 days and that I should call LG back and request another company………. so I did. This time, I asked to speak with a manager. The manager (Keir was his name), while he was very professional, he also brought up that the unit was out of warranty and suggested that we have an “assessment” of the issues again and said he would order a new compressor, condenser, etc. and have them expedited so that repairs could be made as quickly as possible. He never mentioned cost, nor did he ask me if I would be willing to pay for any repairs or labor. Since the last repairs had not corrected the issues, he also suggested that if the tech stated the unit could not be repaired that the best he could do is offer a credit voucher toward a new unit, meaning we would have to get another LG refrigerator I reluctantly agreed. An AP Factory Service tech came out this afternoon and after extensive testing, including disassembling the back and removing all shelving and interior panels, he could not find any leaks of coolant inside or outside this unit even though the pressure was indeed low and explained why the unit was not cooling. He was very clear that the coolant was low and that there had to be an internal leak within the sealed interior, none of which is correctable from a technician standpoint. He offered us 3 options: do the same repairs as before replacing the compressor, condenser, recharging the coolant, etc. that might last one day, a week, maybe a month but that we would have to pay for the labor charges at $400+ since only the parts are covered under the parts warranty, pay only the $95.20 service call (which I declined immediately since I did not agree to any charges), or do nothing and go buy a new refrigerator. I asked him what he would do. He stated if it was him he wouldn’t put another penny in this LG and just go buy another refrigerator. That was all I needed to hear! My husband and I are fed up with LG and this refrigerator. After reading 5 pages of identical problems and issues from other customers in the same 2-3 year range on the LG reviews page for this unit where LG has continued charging their customers for labor to replace faulty parts for faulty, defective products that actually did no good and the same issues continue to reoccur, we have come to the conclusion that not only are the 2-3 year refrigerators (LG and Kenmore) like ours are having the same issues over and over but also the new models using the same technology so replacing this fridge with another LG product will just be more headaches and not an acceptable option. Put us on the list for the class action lawsuit! I am attempting to contact the same manager again tomorrow and if I don’t receive satisfactory remediation (refund!!), I will be contacting an attorney to represent my husband and I in this Class Action against LG. Oh, and we have also replaced all of our other kitchen appliances with all LG components. Keeping our fingers crossed. So far, so good on the rest. Apparently, LG is very aware that they are selling a load of crap with every LG refrigerator and now it’s up to consumers like us to raise enough stink and stand up to this nonsense until a recall actually happens if we expect to get anything done. Too bad because we really love all the appliances we’ve bought and if they could actually fix our “top of the line” refrigerator, we would love it too. We will never buy another LG product now!

Oh, and one more note. We continuously receive offers and emails from LG about buying an extended warranty for this refrigerator and our other appliances. When we try to buy the extended warranty for this refrigerator, a message pops up saying our refrigerator is beyond the 1-year manufacturer’s warranty and cannot be insured for future repairs by LG. Now what does that tell you? LG knows full well their refrigerators are crap but they don’t have a problem continuing to charge customers for the labor to come out and replace parts knowing full well that these are merely temporary fixes, if fixed at all!! Make them pay the big bucks is the only way to make a lemon into lemonade!

    1. Denise says:

I’m having the same issue. Did you buy a new Fridge, if so, what brand? I’m fed up with LG.

  6. M Nichols says:

I too have had two compressors replaced in my three year old LG and it is still not freezing. I basically have had to rely on an old Amana in my basement for going on two months. They are scheduled to come today, the fifth time, to try and repair. I am so frustrated.

  7. Sharon Estes says:

I too have an LG refrigerator and it started losing temperature about 3 weeks ago. They had Sear appliance repair (A&E now) come service it. There was huge amounts of ice inside the wall of the freezer. He said it if this doesn’t work, it’s the compressor. Next morning, defrosted frozen fruit all over the freezer. Contacted LG and they told me they cannot find a certified LG technician in the area. When I pointed out they had just sent A&E out, they just kept saying no certified LG technicians in the area. I have phoned them over 8 times in the last 2 weeks. They said they have escalated my claim. They have 3-5 days to get back to me. They no longer call me or email me. They definitely do not want my opinion of them on a survey. The fridge is only 2 1/2 years old, I spent $2,000 on it plus have a 5 year extended warranty. I have little hope this will be resolved.

  8. Shirley says:

We are retired, living on fixed income. We purchased Kenmore Elite by LG. Within two months after the purchase ( middle of the summer), it stops cooling. The compressor, Evaporator, coil, fan and fan motor, freezer door part all has been replaced. The refrigerator continues to stop working for months before they were able to make repairs. We went through three summers without a working refrigerator. We paid 2400.00 thinking we purchased a product that will last. The repairs only last a few months.

  9. Ed Gohuen says:

Our LG refrigerator has been out of service for about a month. The compressor has been replaced twice with brand new compressors and the current compressor is not cooling down the refrigerator either.

  10. Anne says:

Have a LG refrigerator that is 5 years old, paid $2,500. The compressor and sealed components have failed. LG repair person says this cannot be repaired. Warranty what a joke sent us a compressor we have to supply costs to repair which cannot happen. Unit can’t be repaired. Why is Home Depot, Lowe’s any other big box stores banning this product?
