Man taking food from refrigeratorLast week, LG Electronics USA Inc. was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging some of its refrigerators have a defect that causes widespread compressor failure.

LG refrigerators contain a compressor defect that allegedly renders the refrigerator unable to keep food contents cold. According to the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit, the compressor failure may be caused by a failure in the ice maker and/or fan.

“LG promised consumers that its Refrigerators would give them ‘peace of mind’ and be long-lasting,” plaintiffs Robert Montanye, Jason Saber, Jim and Jeni Oney, and Kelley Haggard allege in the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit.

However, they claim that a defect in the refrigerator compressors causes the refrigerators to fail prematurely, causing consumers to be faced with spoiled food and damage to their kitchens due to water leaking from the refrigerator.

“These food losses can cost hundreds of dollars or more for consumers,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit alleges. “Incidental damages, e.g. damage to warping of wood floorboard trim and hardwood floors due to leaking water, cost even more.”

When consumers call LG for repairs, the repairs allegedly fail repeatedly and the customers are required to pay for labor costs each time a repair is attempted, the LG class action lawsuit alleges. The large number of compressor failures related to the LG refrigerator defect has allegedly resulted in a backlog of replacement compressors, forcing consumers to wait a long time—sometimes more than a month—for repairs.

According to the LG refrigerator compressor defect class action lawsuit, the compressor defect typically manifests within the first two to four years in the life of the refrigerator. Although the defect manifests early in the useful life of the refrigerator, LG’s limited warranty reportedly does not cover the labor costs beyond the first year for compressor replacements. Therefore, consumers often have to pay for all of the costs.

Labor costs for compressor repairs and replacement often cost more than $500, the plaintiffs allege in the LG class action lawsuit. They claim that thousands of consumer complaints about the LG refrigerator defect have been posted online, many of which can be viewed on LG’s website.

The plaintiffs allege that LG knew of the compressor defect in the refrigerators but failed to disclose it to consumers in order to increase their refrigerator sales.

“LG had a duty to disclose the Compressor Defect based upon its exclusive knowledge of the Compressor Defect – a material fact that, had it been disclosed to consumers (including Plaintiffs), would have resulted in consumers not purchasing their Class Refrigerators,” the LG class action lawsuit states.

The LG class action lawsuit seeks to certify a nationwide Class, New Jersey Class, New York Class, Texas Class and Utah Class of consumers who purchased an LG refrigerator with the alleged compressor defect. The plaintiffs assert claims for violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express warranty, breach of the implied warranty of merchantability, unjust enrichment, and other consumer protection statutes.

Last month, a California woman filed a class action lawsuit alleging LG refrigerators have defective temperature control systems that cause food to spoil and ice to melt.

The plaintiffs are represented by Benjamin F. Johns, Alison G. Gushue and Andrew W. Ferich of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Robert Montanye, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:17-cv-05882, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

UPDATE: The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit was dismissed on March 29, 2018.  Top Class Actions will let our viewers know if any new lawsuits with this complaint are filed.

  1. KJ Cotts says:

Cut your losses and don’t ever buy LG again is my advice. I bought my fridge for $2100.00 six years ago and have had several cosmetic problems including door rust (first 6 month) and the shelves are made to fall off. And then the big problems started one year after my five year warranty was up. Freezer stopped working June 2021 that cost me $800 and now the compressor in September. LG so graciously has given me a replacement compressor for free (guilty), but labor will cost $638.00. Stay away from Home Depot, Lowe’s, and PC Richards when buying appliances, they push garbage appliances like LG and Samsung. Get a Bosch or KitchenAid from a local reputable appliance only store. Shop around! You will pay more up front, but it will save you money in the long run.

  2. MASOOD HAQ says:

The Lg french door I purchased in 2019 have a problem, the repair company came in to put new compressor but the result was worst this time .Refrigerator have 70 F and freezer was tuning at 65 have to call beck the mechanic who stated that i need complete Evaporated assembly. The company which is provided by LG have absolutely no knowledge and this company Appliance service located in Burbank Ca

  3. Celeste says:

And what are your alternatives if your model is NOT on the list? Our LG Refrigerator LMXS28626S just stopped working two days ago. Had zero idea that LG had known problems with their appliances. I’m so pissed as are all of you. Non LG repair company wants to charge $1200 for replacement compressor.

    1. Leon says:

My LG refrigerator went out today. Look up the class action lawsuit. It was closed on December 2020 stating that LG will replace your compressor if you purchase from 2014-2017

      1. Epuefua says:

        Hello All,
We have encountered the same Freezer stop working problem. Also was not aware of the class action lawsuit in 2020. Such a shame! Bought the LG side by side fridge in 3/2018 from Best Buy, the freezer went out a week ago. Called LG, it was the compressor which is covered for 5 years so worked it out to an appliance repair guy that they are contracted with, he replaced the compressor 3 days later, however today noticed ice-cream is real soft so we reset it by pressing per online instructions “Press and hold both the REFRIGERATOR AND ICE PLUS buttons simultaneously for five seconds.” We shall see what the verdict is in the morning. So upset. We previously owned a Whirlpool bought it in 2021 it is 20 years old and we put in the garage for overflow never had problems and it is still humming along. Replaced it with LG in 2018, and I can already see that it was a bad purchase. The ironic thing is when it went down, we had to put items in the whirlpool…I will not ever buy anything LG related.

        1. Debbie Scott says:

Might want to file another class action law suit. LG is still having problems with their Refrigerators . We received our LG appliance package mid November 2020…..ordered it in June. The gas stove went out in less then 36 hours after being installed in our home. Home Depot replaced it….though it took 3 months. They did give us a loaner though it didn’t match the color of our other appliances. We called on our refrigerator on September 17, 2021. Gave all the information and did some troubleshooting. Finished troubleshooting on my own. Was told I’d receive a call back within a couple days. Call never came. Finally I called them back last week. They sent someone out from LG. It was my compressor.??‍♀️ (They still have compressor problems). The guys tools were on back order so he couldn’t put the coolant in it. So I had to wait until yesterday for another company to fix it. Started over for diagnosis…came to same conclusion. Then when the guy installed the coolant I kept telling him I was smelling it, that apparently there was a leak. He finally checked for a leak….and sure enough there was. Thankful there’s not pilot lights on my stove…..the coolant is highly flammable. Five hours of my time yesterday, 2-3 hours Friday and been on the phone with them today for approximately 3 hours. Now taking photos of every food item we lost….then starting to shop to replace it all. Keeping receipts because they’re going to pay me back 100% of what it cost to replace it. If they fight me on it, I’ll take them to court.

          1. Em says:

Do you have one of the newer LG fridges with R600 coolant in it? Or is it still R134 coolant?

      2. Kimberly Widmer says:

Just call LG CUSTOMER SERVICE!! They replaced BOTH my Comoressor and motherboard completely free of charge, no labor fees or parts ect, and were pretty fast with sending repair man out ect. The only thing I’m unhappy with is I did loose alot of food and have to.wait on check for food replenish 6 weeks for check, a little ridiculous.. otherwise hapoy with purchase, just hoping it doesn’t break again and then id have to pay

        1. Shari Edwards says:

Is your unit within the 5 year warranty period? I just called and mine was purchased in 2015, and they said I would have to pay for labor because the 5 year period had passed. But my model is included in the class action lawsuit settlement.

  4. Dana Whalen says:

My LG French door refrigerator went out today (non-cooling) and because of the recent class action settlement, it is 100% covered for repairs and loss. (Which includes food loss, damage to property, etc)

When I called LG, the 11st LG rep said that my model was not covered. He lied. I found the class settlement info, called back as my model is included in the suit, and the 2nd rep verified both my refrigerator model and serial number and said it is indeed covered under what they are calling a “Class Action Model.” The 2nd rep also noted in my file that the previous Lg rep lied to me and is following up.

For those of you who are experiencing a non-cooling event, check out the class action settlement link below and for those of us who are classed under “future non-cooling events which is after Sept 2020) I am including the claims form link. Keep all records, grocery receipts or pictures of the spoiled food, damage etc. anything you have.

If you paid for repairs, etc, get your money back! You have 5 years extended warranty from purchase date or until Sept 2021 for those without proof or for those who bought theirs earlier in the settlement year window. On the 3rd failure, they are suppose to give you $500 to up to the purchase price back depending on usage.

Hope this helps anyone, like me. I don’t trust Lg at this point, and being lied to by the 1st LG rep really was garbage.

    1. jb says:

lets face it. most appliances built within the last 20-25 years are garbage, period. factory engineered to fail sooner than later knowing most of today`s dumbed-down consumer population will shrug their shoulders and blindly accept their loss yet be the first to make the same mistake tomorrow.

    2. Audrs Smith says:

My LG fridge went out 3 days ago. Of course, it’s the compressor. Thank you for the info. Never would have bought this hunk of junk with these issues.

    3. Elizabeth Puefua says:

Thank you Dana for the links and info. AS soon as our freezer stopped working, I googled LG freezers not working and the class action law suit popped right up. I didn’t know about it until my freezer went down. LG stands for Living is Good, I’d like to add “until your freezer stops working.”

    4. Debbie Scott says:

Sadly my model is not included in the class action settlement. Yet they just replaced my compressor yesterday. I see another class action lawsuit being filed against them

  5. Judith Schnur says:

My Kenmore Elite which I purchased in August of 2016, just went out (freezer and refrigerator. It took 3 weeks to get a service member out to my house. He told me that it is the compressor and that is all he does
(replaces LG compressors for refrigerators less than 5 years old). The replacement will only last the same amount of time. This is costing me $539.00. It will be another 2 weeks before he can come out to fix it. I am spreading the word never to buy an LG, Kenmore, or Samsung refrigerator!

    1. DT says:

Diddo, and same purchase year too. Now all my food is crammed into an 80’s vintage, still running in the basement. Complete BS. For what it’s worth, my matching Kenmore Elite dishwasher, purchased at the same time, had the diverter motor o-ring fail last year. It drained the water onto my new hardwood floors, warping them. Found out it’s another well-known defect. Of course it’s not covered under their fake warranty. They want to sell you a (expensive!) new diverter motor, but it’s discontinued. I couldn’t afford a new dishwasher, so I found a aftermarket replacement o-ring. New Kenmore is junk. You couldn’t pay me to take one home after my experience. Good riddance Sears. I hope they never recover from bankruptcy.

    2. Carol Davis says:

No , will never buy another LG frig. They replacing compressor but I am having to pay for labor .
If this is problem that LG jason regular basis . Not good . Not a happy csmper

      1. Leo says:

Why you are paying for labor?

        1. Troyce Brown says:

Leo, I have to pay for the labor on my compressor also because mine lasted past the five year window where it would have been covered.

    3. Troyce Brown says:

I totally agree. I will never purchase anything from LG again! My freezer door had to be replaced about 2 or 3 years ago and my compressor is being replaced literally right now as I type this message.

  6. Lydia Fox says:

Away, returned to discover all the frozen food defrosted & some luke warm, ruined . Tried the breaker & the unplugging from the wall however the LG refrigerator isn’t working.
I am upset to know that this has been an on going problem & no repercussions to Inforce this company to do the right thing. Unfortunately ,It is the consumers who have to pay the price
    Purchased 2018
I will be contacting the company hoping for a positive reply

  7. Angel Alvarado says:

My LG refrigerator with French doors and bottom freezer stopped working yesterday. I had a tech look at it and he said that the compressor was bad but that I was still within the 10 year warranty which meant that LG will replace the compressor but charge me for the labor which would be about $500 . From what I’ve learned the LG compressor is a defective compressor that they go out quite frequently. I believe there should’ve been a recall to replace the bad all compressors instead of letting people Find out the hard way . Because it’s under warranty from LG my insurance AHS Will not cover it. I am going to try to call LG tomorrow on Saturday I hate to because I know I am going to get the shaft ! When I bought the refrigerator we were never told about the defective compressors and how many were failing. If I knew I would’ve never bought an LG refrigerator!

  8. Deana Yarnish says:

Same thing happened to us on July 12th. LG French Door 25 cu ft fridge suddenly stopped – purchased on March 19, 2019 so only 2 years and four months old . LG us sending tech out on 7/23. Meanwhile I tried to buy a 17 cu ft whirlpool or Frigidaire for the basement. No one had any on stock. So I bought a 10.1 cu ft fridge which was the biggest I could give anywhere to purchase and take home immediately. So far it’s meeting our needs tho space is much smaller. I hope the repair works or I will be buying a new fridge -not made by LG.

    1. Deana Yarnish says:

The LG technician was to come to repair our refrigerator today. We received a confirmation from LG. This morning he called to tell me he had a family emergency and could he come Monday. Both my husband and I work. My job may require that I leave to attend an appointment in a hurry. I cannot keep clearing my day to wait fir a repair technician who can’t come. I am beyond frustrated at this point and ready to trash this useless thing!

  9. MARGARET LAFIAN says:

my French door top of line 29 CU FT SS LG, model no. LMXS30776S stopped cooling on a Thursday JULY 1, 2021 Monday, 5 days later, after throwing out, probably at least $1,000 worth of food, etc., in fridge and freezer, the DTE home protection plan service, for which I pay $35 month, came to tell me it is the compressor and rattled off repair parts jargon that would be necessary. Considering the shortage of almost everything on this planet, don’t know if it can be fixed or when … only God knows. Luckily I have an extra smaller WHIRLPOOL fridge to help with this disaster and expense. I would not have another LG if it were given to me FREE. Oh… .aesthetically they are very pretty…but their inner guts are CHEAP and horrid. Tell that to CONSUMER’S REPORTS which rated LG so highly ….TOTALLY FALSE, UNBELIEVABLE, AND DOWNRIGHT FRAUDULENT. Who’s in bed with who? and who paid who off to misrepresent the truth to gullible consumers. WHAT A JOKE! ! ! ! I want to be included in the class action litigation against LG. Doesn’t LG stand for LIFE’S GOOD? It should be LG = LOUSY GOODS” My email is mlafian@me.com

    1. Joan says:

the class action lawsuit was dismissed March of 2018
try to call LG using the number inside your refrigerator and as someone else mentioned, keep pressing 3 until you get a live person to speak with

    2. Linda says:

Same here. Will never buy an LG refrigerator again. We had three…two in apartment rentals and one in our home. The compressors in the rental units both died. Am hoping it won’t go bad in my home too.

    3. Dana Whalen says:

You are under warranty due to the class action settlement! Your model is listed as covered , when I looked it up, under this settlement until 5 years from the date of purchase or sept 2021.

      https://www.lgfridgesettlement.com/covered-models.php

Food loss, repairs, damage, all is covered by LG.

Mine is being repaired tomorrow under what LG is calling a “class action model”. Call LG and let them know, they will verify the model, the serial number and then arrange free labor and repair. Hope this helps you. If you did repair then here is the link to the claim form for fail events after sept 2020. (Same page, just a different tab)

      https://angeion-public.s3.amazonaws.com/www.LGFridgeSettlement.com/docs/SA+Ex.+4+Enhanced+Warranty+Claim+Form+Angeion+v.4.pdf

    4. WF says:

Agree, I’m going to cancel my Consumer Reports subscription. They should mention if there is a class action law suit on a product. Only reason I bought LG was that they gave it good marks.

      1. James Carroll Jr says:

Consumer Reports recommended LG as an all around brand. LG refrigerators were not ranked as highly. I’ve noticed CR ratings to be wrong and laughable at times when rating both appliances and automobiles. They definitely have biases. Consumers rank products highly just because CR did one example: Whirlpool makes the essentially similar washer under all it’s brands. The higher priced Maytag and KitchenAid always rank higher. WP made Kenmore appliances for decades, yet an identical Kenmore would be ranked differently from the Whirlpool, Admiral, Amana, Maytag and others.

  10. Barbara A Mayberry says:

Bought a new LG french door model in 2016, needed to have repair work done in 2018 because it stopped cooling. Need to have repairmen come again in 2021 because everything was spoiled in refrigerator. I don’t know how much this is going to cost because the warranty has run out. Refrigerator looks nice: but is NOT worth the money paid. I’m retired and can not afford a new refrigerator but get no help from the company. Should have to refund every ones money who has reported this problem.

    1. CHARLES S HUGHES says:

I, too, bought a Kenmore Elite French door refrigerator made by LG in 2016 and it died today (7/22/2021). Five years and two months is a very short life for a machine that cost almost $3,000!
They should never have dropped that class action lawsuit!!

      1. Leon says:

They never did. Look it up
