Man taking food from refrigeratorLast week, LG Electronics USA Inc. was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging some of its refrigerators have a defect that causes widespread compressor failure.

LG refrigerators contain a compressor defect that allegedly renders the refrigerator unable to keep food contents cold. According to the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit, the compressor failure may be caused by a failure in the ice maker and/or fan.

“LG promised consumers that its Refrigerators would give them ‘peace of mind’ and be long-lasting,” plaintiffs Robert Montanye, Jason Saber, Jim and Jeni Oney, and Kelley Haggard allege in the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit.

However, they claim that a defect in the refrigerator compressors causes the refrigerators to fail prematurely, causing consumers to be faced with spoiled food and damage to their kitchens due to water leaking from the refrigerator.

“These food losses can cost hundreds of dollars or more for consumers,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit alleges. “Incidental damages, e.g. damage to warping of wood floorboard trim and hardwood floors due to leaking water, cost even more.”

When consumers call LG for repairs, the repairs allegedly fail repeatedly and the customers are required to pay for labor costs each time a repair is attempted, the LG class action lawsuit alleges. The large number of compressor failures related to the LG refrigerator defect has allegedly resulted in a backlog of replacement compressors, forcing consumers to wait a long time—sometimes more than a month—for repairs.

According to the LG refrigerator compressor defect class action lawsuit, the compressor defect typically manifests within the first two to four years in the life of the refrigerator. Although the defect manifests early in the useful life of the refrigerator, LG’s limited warranty reportedly does not cover the labor costs beyond the first year for compressor replacements. Therefore, consumers often have to pay for all of the costs.

Labor costs for compressor repairs and replacement often cost more than $500, the plaintiffs allege in the LG class action lawsuit. They claim that thousands of consumer complaints about the LG refrigerator defect have been posted online, many of which can be viewed on LG’s website.

The plaintiffs allege that LG knew of the compressor defect in the refrigerators but failed to disclose it to consumers in order to increase their refrigerator sales.

“LG had a duty to disclose the Compressor Defect based upon its exclusive knowledge of the Compressor Defect – a material fact that, had it been disclosed to consumers (including Plaintiffs), would have resulted in consumers not purchasing their Class Refrigerators,” the LG class action lawsuit states.

The LG class action lawsuit seeks to certify a nationwide Class, New Jersey Class, New York Class, Texas Class and Utah Class of consumers who purchased an LG refrigerator with the alleged compressor defect. The plaintiffs assert claims for violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express warranty, breach of the implied warranty of merchantability, unjust enrichment, and other consumer protection statutes.

Last month, a California woman filed a class action lawsuit alleging LG refrigerators have defective temperature control systems that cause food to spoil and ice to melt.

The plaintiffs are represented by Benjamin F. Johns, Alison G. Gushue and Andrew W. Ferich of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Robert Montanye, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:17-cv-05882, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Purchased LG French Door fridge from Lowe’s here in PA in June of 2018. Problem started three days ago, first with ice maker making ice but not depositing it in the bin, two days later, ice in tray turned to water and my food in freezer was starting to thawe, called Repairman and he said he wouldn’t even touch it, said to call LG ,lawsuits pending. I called LG,said the would sent out service rep in 12 days. I better not have to pay for labor on this compressor or they will be hearing from my attorney. I will NEVER purchase ANYTHING from LG again.

      Same exact issue here.

      1. JaniceRN says:

Mine just stopped working tonight and I replaced the compressor about 2 years ago. The repair guy said it is an issue with LG fridge. I am debating just buying a new one. This is ridiculous. New fridge NOT new LG.

  2. Ann Scoma says:

I have a kenmore refrigerator French door ice maker 3 years old refrigerator stopped cooling service man from sears said interior temperature reading is 74 degrees compressor is back ordered after one I called they have no idea when or if I would get the part after 3 weeks no refrigerator they were going to send me $158 for part that never came. I had to go out and a refrigerator original refrigerator was $1800. New one 2000 with removal of broken refrigerator

I bought my LG French door fridge in 2017. Compressor went out last week. they replaced the compressor 4 days later. but my food in the fridge and freezer spoiled. was looking for compensation from LG and saw class action law suit at https://www.lgfridgesettlement.com/submit-claim.php. Court hearing will be in December 2020 according to the website. FYI

  3. Saima Malik says:

Second time replacing an Lg compressor in 4 years. Don’t understand why the f**** sears is using lg compressors in kenmore elites. Spent over 3k on this piece of junk.

  4. Cathy Wilson says:

So are you saying that we as a consumer can’t do anything about the compressor? My was 2 yrs old when it went. The Sears service guy that came out said to me before he walk in the door that he knew whast was wrong. Then he goes to his truck and get a new compressor. He said it was the 5th one he replace this week. At that point I knew there’s a problem. Is there anything we can do?

  5. Ann Larson says:

Purchased Kenmore with a lg compressor, it went after 4 years. The compressor and refrigerator only had a one year warrenty. $ 837.00 to fix. What a RIP off.

    1. D Avila says:

Last month, it happened exactly the same to me, I had a Kenmore fridge with LG compressor.
Such a rip off in parts and labor.

  6. chrissy calderon says:

So this is a prior incident? I was given an error code 22 on my refrigerator and the overload protector is good. LG says it isn’t covered in the warranty. Only the compressor. My relay, may I add is not the same relay you find in every video, has continuity. My compressor however doesn’t. I still have to pay to have a service technician come out and have him verify for it to “maybe” be covered. 2 years and one month and we have had nothing but a leaky fridge that doesn’t get warm anymore, the ice maker was always getting stuck, it’s super loud and now my tile creaks in my kitchen, not to mention everything spoiled since we went grocery shopping the day before, have pets on refrigerated meds, a toddler and a special needs adult with a special diet that spoiled. i’m pissed. Now I have to find my receipt wherever it is before I can submit my claim for a tech to come out or I am responsible for the cost of this scam fridge. Good thing our 30 year old fridge in the garage works great. Wish we had all our food in there when this gigantic paperweight went out.

    1. JaniceRN says:

OMG your issue sounds almost identical to my issue. Except I don’t have a lot of what you are dealing with – I can’t even imagine as dealing with a freezer/fridge that doesn’t work is bad enough. I already had this POS fixed 2 years ago (mine is an LG). Now not working again. We also have an old big box freezer in the garage, thank god.

  7. Kat Stidham says:

We purchased our LG refrigerator a little over five years ago and a couple of years into it we had to replace the compressor motor and now we’re having to do it again. This is so frustrating because we’ve lost food twice now, Not to mention all of our hardware in the refrigerator rusted and had to be replaced.b We are seniors and replacing a refrigerator with a limited income isn’t easy………

  8. Heather Wangeman says:

Our 2 year old LG refrigerator stopped cooling. The repairman told us it was the compressor and he refused to fix it because he said the replacement compressor would fail within 6 months and it would cost us so much money for the labor and parts. He said that in the past 2 months he has found 7 different LG refrigerators with failing compressors. Never buy LG. They are faulty and they know it but won’t answer the phone.

    1. Don Hatfield says:

I only had my lg LFXS29766S FOR 2 YEARS AND IT HAS A BAD COMPRESSOR AND LG WILL NOT ANSWER THE PHONE OR EMAILS. I’LL NEVER BUY LG ANY MORE.

      1. Laura says:

Don Hatfield you need to call the 800-243-0000 number. My fridge compressor died July 31…I think I am just now about to get it all resolved but in the meantime they provided me with a link to get reimbursed for the purchase of a mini-fridge (up to $250). Call the 800 #…at first prompt say Customer Service (or press 3) the next prompt say Refrigerator and then you should get a customer service rep. If the bot says it can help you just keep repeating Customer Service (usually after 3x it sends you to a rep, all bots need you to say it 3x usually just like sales people when you say no not interested 3 repeats of the answer moves you out of that queue) GOOD LUCK its been a pain thats for certain but I think I’m in the last step. THeres also a form for reimbursement of loss of perishables but you have to provide receipts for that as well.

    2. Ophelia says:

I called Sears at Customer Solutions 1-800-479-6351 then option 6 and then 4 and they were able to look up my receipt from 2015 with my phone number and email me a copy. LG said they would cover the compressor but not the labor only if I had proof of purchase. We’ll see if they do.

  9. Randy says:

Refrigerator is less than 5 years old and the second compressor quit last night. No one should buy an LG. They are junk and know one wants to work on them.

    1. JaniceRN says:

      Hi Randy,
Same here. Second time this has happened with this POS LG fridge. Last time it was the compressor and something else. Only part was covered by LG not labor or anything else. It cost me 1K to fix with the LG rep that came out. I paid it because I wanted a working fridge. I should cut my losses and buy a new fridge. NOT LG!!!!!!!

  10. Marleny Cribb says:

Same problem here. I bought a combo of 4 Lg kitchen appliances on 2015. 2017 I got a light for filter replacement, I got a new filter but the ice maker never worked again. Last weekend the refrigerator stopped cooling and my food getting damage. A technician came check it and said it was the compressor. It cost me all $700 dollar. I am very upset the compressor used life it’s around 12 years not less. Add me to the list!
