Man taking food from refrigeratorLast week, LG Electronics USA Inc. was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging some of its refrigerators have a defect that causes widespread compressor failure.

LG refrigerators contain a compressor defect that allegedly renders the refrigerator unable to keep food contents cold. According to the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit, the compressor failure may be caused by a failure in the ice maker and/or fan.

“LG promised consumers that its Refrigerators would give them ‘peace of mind’ and be long-lasting,” plaintiffs Robert Montanye, Jason Saber, Jim and Jeni Oney, and Kelley Haggard allege in the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit.

However, they claim that a defect in the refrigerator compressors causes the refrigerators to fail prematurely, causing consumers to be faced with spoiled food and damage to their kitchens due to water leaking from the refrigerator.

“These food losses can cost hundreds of dollars or more for consumers,” the LG refrigerator class action lawsuit alleges. “Incidental damages, e.g. damage to warping of wood floorboard trim and hardwood floors due to leaking water, cost even more.”

When consumers call LG for repairs, the repairs allegedly fail repeatedly and the customers are required to pay for labor costs each time a repair is attempted, the LG class action lawsuit alleges. The large number of compressor failures related to the LG refrigerator defect has allegedly resulted in a backlog of replacement compressors, forcing consumers to wait a long time—sometimes more than a month—for repairs.

According to the LG refrigerator compressor defect class action lawsuit, the compressor defect typically manifests within the first two to four years in the life of the refrigerator. Although the defect manifests early in the useful life of the refrigerator, LG’s limited warranty reportedly does not cover the labor costs beyond the first year for compressor replacements. Therefore, consumers often have to pay for all of the costs.

Labor costs for compressor repairs and replacement often cost more than $500, the plaintiffs allege in the LG class action lawsuit. They claim that thousands of consumer complaints about the LG refrigerator defect have been posted online, many of which can be viewed on LG’s website.

The plaintiffs allege that LG knew of the compressor defect in the refrigerators but failed to disclose it to consumers in order to increase their refrigerator sales.

“LG had a duty to disclose the Compressor Defect based upon its exclusive knowledge of the Compressor Defect – a material fact that, had it been disclosed to consumers (including Plaintiffs), would have resulted in consumers not purchasing their Class Refrigerators,” the LG class action lawsuit states.

The LG class action lawsuit seeks to certify a nationwide Class, New Jersey Class, New York Class, Texas Class and Utah Class of consumers who purchased an LG refrigerator with the alleged compressor defect. The plaintiffs assert claims for violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express warranty, breach of the implied warranty of merchantability, unjust enrichment, and other consumer protection statutes.

Last month, a California woman filed a class action lawsuit alleging LG refrigerators have defective temperature control systems that cause food to spoil and ice to melt.

The plaintiffs are represented by Benjamin F. Johns, Alison G. Gushue and Andrew W. Ferich of Chimicles & Tikellis LLP.

The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Robert Montanye, et al. v. LG Electronics USA Inc., Case No. 2:17-cv-05882, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

UPDATE: The LG Refrigerator Compressor Defect Class Action Lawsuit was dismissed on March 29, 2018.  Top Class Actions will let our viewers know if any new lawsuits with this complaint are filed.

My refrigerator freezer has failed. The ice maker doesn’t work and foods thawed in the freezer.

      1. brenda clarkston says:

I just had the same failure I have only had it ,, 5 years!! The compressor
        Rip off.

  5. Mike Armando says:

We bought Kenmore 3 doors french door refrigerator in 2019 and the compressor stop working in Jan. 2022.
    Kenmore refrigerator
    model number: 795.73105.711
    serial number: 901KR00029
We had the LG compressor replaced by sears repairman in Jan 29th and broke again on April 29. the repair cost is $675.18 x 2 = $1350.36 + tip($100 x 2) =$1550.36.
We intend to take a legal action against this incident and hoping one of you Sears, Kenmore, LG can take care of their customer issue.
I downloaded SC-100 form and filled out and ready to go to Superior court to fill the small claim case.
This is rediculous and neglect of consumers.
For justice, we can not let this monkey business keep going.
    We need to stand up.

    1. Gene Forguson says:

Look at your WARRANTY in your owners manual or find it online with your model number. If it states your compressor is warranted for 10 years then LG will replace your compressor. Mine said if it fails it will be replaced for free. Sears argued with me but the tech that came out, read my warranty and said the repair will be FREE. Don’t let them pull anything over on you. NO CARGE MEANS NO CHARGE. They like saying you get the compressor free but want charge you for labor and service call. NOPE, FREE!

      1. brenda clarkston says:

        Good info I will check.

  6. Britiny Clark says:

I purchased an LG Refrigerator Linear Compressor Model LSX26326S in September 2017 from Lowes. The compressor went out last week 03/01/2022. Total food loss. Called LG and LG charged me $125.00 to make an appointment with a technician and then when he came they had him charge me another $250.00. After tax it was a little over $400.00. This was just for labor as they said they covered the part under warranty. Wow! That’s a lot for labor when they know these compressors are faulty. We went back to the grocery store and loaded up since we previously lost all our food. The repair lasted for one night and they next day, water all over the floor again. Again, more food loss. Called LG and they sent the repair tech out again and he said, “oh, sorry, their is a leak in hose and all your coolant leaked out….That was my fault.” So he repaired that, and we called LG for food replacement. They had me filled out questions and answers via text and the rep said great job, you should qualify and should hear back within a week about your check for food replacement. The very next day, I get a text saying, “Sorry, we cannot approve your Food reimbursement at this time.” Wait, What! LG is a complete head ache. I then called and asked for a refund in labor cost since it wasn’t done correctly the first time and we lost food, yet again. They of course said no. Then said, you purchased the refrigerator in April of 2016. That’s a total lie. The first rep I initially called asked me if she could put down that the fridge was MADE in April of 2016, and I said, “well I guess, but I don’t know when or if that’s when it was made.” Now I found out she put in their system that I purchased it in April of 2016! They are scam artists as well I see. Now they want me to find my receipt to prove otherwise. Even though it says on my LG profile online that I registered it in 2017. I’m now having to try and find a 4 and a half year old receipt, that I’m not sure I still have. Something has to be done about LG.

    1. Sheryl says:

OMG! the same thing I am going through. Model LMXS27626S that stopped cooling and freezing. I had to pay the $125 plus tax for the service tech to come. They replaced the compressor for another $250 and the refrigerator stopped cooling/freezing in 24 hrs. Dealing with that situation right now! ugh I bought it in October 2016.

    2. Georgianna Seidell says:

I bought my fridge in 4/13/16 I called lg and told them? They gave me a appliance repair in my area. I called them they told me they could not check it out for a few weeks? So I ended up paying $133.95 for a appliance person to come ? He told me it was the compressor and it would cost about $14oo to fix it? This fridge is less then 6 years old? I called LG they said I was all set and they would have a appliance repair come the next day and fix it? The next day the appliance person called me and said I would have to pay $1100 to get it fixed?
If you know how I can get any kind of help I would so appreciate it.

    3. Suzanne Kreisher says:

We purchased a Model LSX26326S in September 2018 from Lowes and this past week the compressor died. Like you the warranty covers pretty much nothing at this point. Thankfully we purchased a whole house warranty from another vendor so we shouldn’t we out too very much money. It will be several days until everything is repaired or replaced. We’ve used LG products before and have been satified with them but after this I doubt I’ll purchase LG again.

      1. Casey Rohling says:

My first was repaired 4 times and then bought back my second was purchased in 2017 and the compressor went out. Had an appliance repair man quote the repair parts and labor. Then he said the compressor was probably still under warranty that I would need to call sears. Compressor was covered but the service call and labor was more that if I would have paid someone local to fix. Really feel stupid for buying the elite. You would think that getting what the salesman said was the top of the line would last longer. Bought a cheap whirlpool refrigerator for the garage that, 11 years old never had a problem out of it.

  7. Cynthia DarDar says:

I purchased an LG refrigerator and the compressor has gone out it has not never kept my food cold enough or the freezer cold enough it is completely out now

    1. Taylor says:

I purchased an LG refrigerator (2/2018) and the freezer suddenly stopped working and after looking at the panel and following the reset button, one day later both the refrigerator and freezer are not working. I’m disgusted as is everyone else & disappointed I didn’t do my research

      1. Jeanne says:

Yes, my LG refrigerator freezer just went out and I had to throw away $1,000.00 worth of meat and seafood in the freezer because it thawed. My warranty was up 3 months ago. Bought it in 11/2016. My floor is flooded and when I called for someone to come out and look at it they said they cannot be here for 3 more days. I am so disgusted as well and disappointed. I will never buy a LG product again. Im sure everything will go bad in the refrigerator as well. They have not heard the last of me.

        1. Tamara Revoir says:

How do you find a repair person? We have called everywhere in our area within 200 miles and no one will fix it.

      2. Pamela Hyland says:

        Feel the same.
3 year old Kenmore Elite with an LG linear compressor failure and Sears wants 729$ to replace ,despite compressor covered under warranty. Apparently they charge 300$ an hour for labor plus parts.
So you end up paying for the defective compressor anyway.
Seriously 300$ an hour ?…..lawyers and surgeons don’t charge that much an hour.
Sears is a sad version of itself now. I’m done with Sears and LG.

        1. Lori Tripp says:

Same with my Kenmore Elite. They cancelled 2 repair appointments, promised to call my in 72 hours three times. i filed a complaint with the BBB, and Sears finally answered. Now my local repair guy diagnosed the compressor was bad and sears has said they will send me the parts under warranty. I haven’t gotten them yet, but i will file in small claims court for the price to rent a refrigerator for 5 weeks since they have been giving me the run around, and add labor cost since Sears knew LG was having issues but still chose to use substandard parts. I am very disappointed and will no longer by loyal to the Kenmore brand.

    2. Em says:

Just curious… do you know when your fridge was manufactured? I just bought a new LG fridge 2 days ago and I’m hoping I didn’t make a bad decision. I had a 5 yr old LG that the compressor just went bad on and got this new LG hoping that they fixed their problems.

      1. Kimberly says:

I bought a LG refrigerator model # LRDCS2603S April 22, 2021 and one day I woke up and I noticed my ice cubes were turning into liquid and stuff wasn’t as cold as it should be!! I was sooo pissed BUT then remembered that I had registered it online and still had P.O.F, so called and have to sat was VERY PLEASED with their customer service, she scheduled a repair man to.come out less then 36 hours after I realized BOTH units were not working at all (it was warmer in my fridge then inside house!!) The Service tech came out and had to.order BOTH a compressor and a motherboard and asked me if we had any power outages in the area recently, which so.had happened 2 weeks prior…really?! I started questioning that moment, it doesn’t take 2 weeks after a power outage for a appliance to FAIL, does it???!! Ok, he ordered parts had them sent UPS to my home and came back 4 days later and fixed it. He was very pleasant also AND ALL THIS WAS COVERED UNDER MY 2 YEAR WARRANTY…..welp, I LOST over $1000 in food and am a family of 5 and bow am STILL STRUGGLING WITH FOOD, because I had to.toss EVERYTHING AWAY and I filed for the food compensation CIA text message 4 times bow and finally was approved for $150.00…and…they said it will take 3 to 6 weeks to.recieve a check!!!
WHAT, THATS ALL & shouldn’t that shit be expedited or something?! I think so….so here we sit with barely any food and going to churches ect for.extra help….sooo upset 😡 🤔 has me thinking if I.made a bad decision purchasing this also. I would have never bought this if I knew of all this. I should have done better research!! Was just excited I was actually able.to afford that at that time!!! Hopefully I have no problems, my warranty expires in 2 month, I guess I’m very lucky to have it happen BEFORE it expired….bow they want me to purchase a extended warranty for 490 bucks or around that yearly so if this shit happens again, I’m covered… SMDH!!! Maybe if it’s bot too late, I’d return that item andngo.back and by a whirlpool or Kenmore or just do some good research and make sure u get the best for yr money…I now.know what I wish I knew before qe spent over $2000. On this fridge. OTHER THEN THAT ISSUE I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS FRIDGE 100%

      2. Georgianna says:

You made a really bad choice.

      3. SFG says:

HI Pam, The same thing happened to us! Our Kenmore Elite with LG Compressor went out although it was older than yours but apparently age doesn’t mean anything because the charge and story is the same apparently. $729 for Sears to put on a “so called” new compressor from LG!!! What a rip off!! Never again. What is odd is my daughter has the exact same LG refrigerator and LG came and fixed hers at $0 !! This was last year. Guess they were in a better mood last year.

      4. Kim says:

They still are NOT backing there warranty for faulty compressor issues as of 3/24/22. Purchased our French door fridge from Lowes in September of 2020 so it’s just about 2 years old. Lowes, Assurant (warranty/protection plan purchased) nor LG will take ownership of compressor now. I’m stuck with spoilage loss of over $1000 + $4500 fridge that doesn’t work properly!

  8. George Michael Kibby says:

At least I live in bitterly cold Iowa. Outside temperature is just a few below zero. Our problem is keeping refrigerated items from freezing. We have 6 coolers with refrigerated products in them. For $20 you can buy a wireless thermometer with TWO remotes. So when refrigerated products get down to 31 degrees we bring them inside till they warm up to mid 40’s then they go back out to garage. Usually about the time we sleep each night.Next week we expect temps in the 40’s for two days. We will put freezer stuff in coolers and refrigerated in cabinets. Then when it goes back down we switch again. I think 95% of people would die if the power ever goes out state wide. We only have to wait another 30 days before a live person SAYS he will show up. Our side by side is just short of 4 years old.

And as a side note. The $5.00 cheap foam coolers work better than the $200 super duper ones and weigh a tenth as much. And be ready for a sales pitch to buy more worthless service contracts on your home products.not already covered on your initial call.

  9. Randy Erickson says:

Well here we are in 2021 and LG refrigerators still have same problem. Mine is 1 year old and compressor went out! Started with ice maker, now the computer board is fried.
Been in contact with LG for last 3 weeks. Each repair company they send out to repair problem can’t do the repair. They were not informed the refrigerant was R600. Lost all the Thanksgiving leftovers. Thanks LG for nothing.

  10. David Dresselhouse says:

Can this same claim process be used for LG refrigerators sold under the Kenmore brand? I have a 3 year old Kenmore (built by LG) that has a defective compressor, purchased in May 2018.

    1. Robert says:

      From Phoenix Arizona.

I have the Kenmore Elite Refrigerator Made by LG also. I purchased mine from a Sears Appliance store in May 2017, This Store is now closed.
My fridge also needs a new compressor and of course the compressor is covered under warranty, but not the high cost of the labor.
I Have been contemplating writing The Arizona Attorney’s General’s Office, thus requesting they step in and have LG repair the defective compressers at 100% of the cost Or forbidding LG to sell any of their products in the state of Az.
It appears the higher courts don’t give hoot. because they set the Class Action law suites aside. What Kind of a deal is this ?
I’m speculating a large kick back vacation somewhere on LG !
      Robert

      1. Eric says:

We have a LG fridge and the compressor just went out 2 weeks ago. contacted LG and they repaired it today for free. no labor charges or part charges. fridge is just less then 4 years old. Did not even have to ask them to cover it they just said they would cover the repair in full. In short just call there customer service line.
