Lexus RX Defective Headlight Class Action Lawsuit

By Kimberly Mirando

2009 Lexus RXA federal class action lawsuit claims Toyota knowingly sold 2004-2009 Lexus RX vehicles containing a defective headlight assembly that allowed condensation and moisture to penetrate, subjecting motorists to dangerous short circuits.

“The Class Vehicles’ headlamp assemblies and related parts are defective, including defects contained in the headlamp housing, because they fail to prevent water and moisture from entering and damaging the interior components of the headlamp assemblies,” the class action lawsuit states. “As a result of the headlight defect, water and moisture enter the headlamp assembly, damaging the ECU [electric control unit] and other related headlamp assembly parts. When this occurs, the Class Vehicles’ headlamps can become dangerously dim and/or completely fail before their expected useful life has run.”

The Lexus RX headlight class action lawsuit goes on to describe how dangerous the alleged defect is, saying that drivers can experience sudden loss of illumination from one or both headlamps at unpredictable intervals, exposing them, and those who share the road with them, to significant and unreasonable danger.

“In addition to those safety hazards, the costs of the headlight defect to consumers can be exorbitant because consumers will be required to pay hundreds, and in many instances, thousands of dollars to both diagnose and repair the headlight defect,” the class action lawsuit says.

The lawsuit alleges Toyota has known about the alleged Lexus headlight defect since at least 2010, when it issued a secret technical service informational bulletin to only dealers, but refuses to recall the vehicles to fix the defects, and has not offered its customers a suitable repair or replacement free of charge, or reimbursement of the costs they incurred in diagnosing and repairing the headlight defect.

The Lexus RX headlight defect class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all purchasers and lessees of any 2004-2009 model year Toyota Lexus RX vehicle who reside in the U.S. It is seeking damages, restitution and other relief for alleged unfair and deceptive business practices, violations of California’s Unfair Business Practices law, fraud by omission, breach of warranty, and more.

How do I join this class action lawsuit?

  2. Gary Miller says:

What is the status of this class action? I have the same problem with the headlights on a 2004 RX330 but with 140,000 miles on it.

  3. Susan Thomas says:

I bought a pre owned Lexus RX330 2 weeks ago and have condensation in my headlights and was wondering if anything ever came about with the class action lawsuit? Or was there a recall?

  4. DEBRAJRAMSEY says:

I asked months ago when could I get my headlamps replaced. The dealer told me when I got the second letter telling me I could take it in. I am still waiting on that letter. My headlamps look awful. I was thinking about selling my car. If I do, I will not be buying another Toyota/Lexus product. I have started noticing headlamps on all cars. Basically the plastic type look awful on other cars too. They may not have this problem but they do have the cloudy problem that inhibits the headlamp. Does anyone know of a car that does not have headlamp issues as it ages? I think they should find a different material. Glass might work.

  5. Sharon Livingston says:

When I received the notification from Lexus I wasn’t having a problem with my headlight. It is on the left have side and I noticed it after picking it up in May 29, 2014. After a transmission was placed in car. I don’t know why they didn’t notice. I called Lexus and was told to bring the car back.

April 2, 2014: Lexus has issued a recall of these headlamps and will replace them free of charge as I understand it. Also, Lexus has notified Repair Facilities of this recall but NOT as yet any consumer or owner of the Lexus cars.

  7. leo says:

I also have the same problem on my 2007 Lexus is 250.. Dealer wants me to pay the cost for replacement.

    1. YOushouldcalltoyota says:

You should call toyota. They have been replacing headlights. Mention lawsuit as well when you talk to them.

  8. Don says:

The left head light leaked and I had it replaced at a cost of $600.00 and now their is a recall on this unit. I was told that I could get my money back for that cost.

  9. April says:

2004 RX330- has been garaged. Moisture in driver’s side assembly has caused entire drivers side headlight assembly to be replaced. $1800 The dashboard has mulitple cracks and I understand this is also a problem with that model.

  10. Melissa dignazio says:

My drivers side headlamp went out with no damage to the exterior. The entire assembly was replaced as it was modular. Cost me$2000. 80k 2007 rx350. I can’t afford for the other light to go.
