The City of Baltimore filed a lawsuit against the owners of the M/V Dali ship claiming they should pay for all damages after the ship crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge and halted commerce in the Port of Baltimore.
There were no high winds or limited visibility when the crash occurred, and boats pass under the Key Bridge approximately 3,600 times each year to the Port of Baltimore without incident, the lawsuit states.
The lawsuit names M/V Dali owner Grace Ocean Private Limited and manager Synergy Marine LTD as the parties responsible.
“The Dali slammed into the bridge, causing the bridge’s immediate collapse, killing at least six individuals, destroying Baltimore property and bringing the region’s primary economic engine to a grinding halt,” the Baltimore Bridge lawsuit says. “The impact of this disaster will be felt for years.”
Port of Baltimore handled 55.5M tons of cargo in 2023, report says
The lawsuit cites a Maryland Department of Transportation report stating the Baltimore Port District handled 55.5 million tons (or 111 billion pounds) of international and domestic cargo for exporters and importers in 2023.
The lawsuit also says tens of thousands of jobs rely directly on the Port of Baltimore’s operation with an estimate that the port generated more than $70 billion of economic value in 2023 alone, including billions of dollars in yearly tax revenue for government entities.
Last year, a class action lawsuit claimed Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) illegally threatened to shut off gas service to Baltimore City residents who declined to have an external gas regulator installed at their home.
