The Syngenta Corn controversy continues as more and more individuals in the farming industry are joining in the legal fight against GMO corn giant Syngenta.
A review of several of the farming articles posted in recent monts shows some forward movement in the Syngenta MDL litigation, a potential roadblock, and indicates that more and more individuals in the corn industry are stepping up to fight the perceived injustice that has been placed upon them.
Here is a look at several top Syngenta farming articles:
Syngenta Corn MDL Bellwether Cases Have Been Chosen
Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against Syngenta alleging the corn manufacturer’s premature release of the MIR162 Viptera seed into the market caused widespread economic loss throughout every industry related to the production, sale, distribution and trade of corn.
Since there have been so many Syngenta lawsuits filed against sharing similar accusations against the GMO corn manufacturer, the lawsuits were grouped together in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) under a single judge at a single court location.
As part of the MDL process, a group of trials are selected to represent the group of cases that will initially be heard. These “test” trials give an idea of how the remainder of the trials will proceed toward a resolution.
Farming News: Corn Producers Don’t Want Syngenta Bellwether Cases Dismissed
As of mid-January, 48 Syngenta lawsuits out of thousands are ready for the next step in the MDL against the GMO corn manufacturer alleging the early release of GMO corn into the market caused irreversible financial damage in all areas of the corn industry.
As part of the multidistrict litigation, the 48 Syngenta GMO corn lawsuits were selected as bellwether cases to be the initial cases heard at trial. However, shortly after the bellwether trial selection, Syngenta filed a motion to strike 15 of those bellwether cases.
The plaintiffs in the Syngenta MDL filed a motion in opposition to Syngenta’s motion to strike, saying that Syngenta’s motion “could create prejudice in the minds of the courts,” according to the article.
Farming News: Syngenta Lawsuit Alleges GMO Corn Caused Financial Harm
A pair of Arkansas farmers are some of the most recent plaintiffs to take legal action against Syngenta. The lawsuit alleges that Syngenta’s commercialization of the MIR162 Viptera corn continued despite Syngenta’s knowledge that the unapproved seed would pose a risk to the corn industry.
The Syngenta lawsuit highlights that other trade disruptions, such as the 2000 corn supply contamination and the 2006 contamination of GMO rice, should have served as knowledge about what Syngenta’s corn commingling could have done to the market. The lawsuit claimed that Syngenta should have been more responsible about introducing their new corn seed into commerce.
Iowa Corn Farmer Files Syngenta GMO Lawsuit
An Iowa corn farmer joined the ever-growing number of lawsuits filed against Syngenta with allegations of financial loss due to the corn manufacturer’s actions.
Plaintiff Daniel C. not only alleged that the allegedly premature release of MIR162 Viptera corn caused him financial damage, but Syngenta’s Duracade caused the same type of financial harm.
Duracade is another GMO corn seed released by Syngenta that was released after Viptera. According to the article, Daniel claimed that “Syngenta’s follow up release of a second generation GMO corn seed after the Viptera debacle demonstrates the company’s disregard of corn farmers and the corn export industry.”
