Baby ShampooIf you purchased Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo or Wal-Mart brand Equate Tearless Baby Wash, you may want to stop using it. A class action lawsuit has been approved this month that claims these products may contain a toxin linked to cancer.

The class action lawsuit, filed earlier this year, accuses Johnson & Johnson and Wal-Mart Stores of selling shampoo and baby wash that allegedly contains methylene chloride, an ingredient banned by the FDA in cosmetics because it’s linked to cancer. The law firm that filed the lawsuit is also investigating Target’s Night-time Bath and Body Wash, which is not currently named in the suit.

A third Johnson & Johnson plant is now also under investigation for alleged quality concerns. The new Johnson & Johnson plant is one that manufactures Pepcid and Mylanta among other products.

This is scary, especially since I was diagnosed with blepharitis, an infection of the eye, and one of the treatments my eye doctor told me to do was wash my eyes out daily with baby shampoo, so I bought the “Johnson’s” brand, thinking it was the best, and would be the most delicate on the eyes, not knowing I probably was doing more damage.

I used that product on my newborn. She got a severe skin reaction that caused her to hospitalized for 8 days. I hate J&J products. My lawyers will be fighting on my side.

From what I’ve read online J&J is reformulating its entire children’s line to avoid any & all carcinogens by sometime b4 the end of this year (2013) and all adult products by I believe the first quarter of 2014! That said, I’m wondering if Aveeno which I’ve been using for years is safe. Didn’t specify which products in either case. To be safe I just decided to avoid J&J and go to other safer product lines. Yes to carrots has a wonderful adult line of lotions and makeup, method, 7th Generation, and Burts Bees are some of my favorites that I’ve researched and feel safe using.

My father has been using this in the shower to clean his eyes. I know it sounds crazy but for as long as I can remember since childhood, I’m 35 now, he uses it to wash hos eyes. Literally puts lather IN his eyes. Hmmm.

  7. StylishConsumer says:

My daughter has sensitive skin. So I have always used this Johnson & Johnson in her hair. This is ridiculous.

  8. Mary says:

I am not surprised that there is a lawsuit. In Canada, by law you don’t have to put ingredients on the label, unless you can drink the product.

My sources say that products can be sold on store shelves and do not have to have any testing by gov’t. Tearless shampoos contain an ingredient that numbs the eyes so they don’t feel the sting. You can

I used to slather my new baby in their lotion every single day! Sickening! I’ve known about them for a couple years now and switched stores, shopping online for safe products with a company I trust. I actually talk about how the J&J shampoo anethetizes eyes in my presentations with the wellness company I work with.

I am making the switch from conventional baby soaps to homemade natural baby body wash and shampoo. There are many tutorials online. Its much cheaper and much safer than anything you can find in these conventional baby soaps. Remember that even if the FDA approves an ingredient, it doesn’t mean that there are side effects or health hazards linked to the ingredient. Its definitely worth looking into for the health of our children!
