A plaintiff couple has filed an intracranial bleeding lawsuit claiming that the husband suffered serious bleeding problems as a result of Xarelto.
Plaintiffs Paul B. and Eugenia B. are filing this intracranial bleeding lawsuit against Janssen, the makers of Xarelto, an anticoagulant that the husband was taking to prevent blood clots.
Paul began taking Xarelto, generically known as rivaroxoban, on April 3, 2015 and continued taking it until April 9, 2015, less than one week. His intracranial bleeding lawsuit states that he began taking Xarelto to treat blood clots.
However, on April 9, 2015, he began to experience serious intracranial bleeding.
This intracranial bleeding lawsuit claims that Paul “was caused to suffer from serious Intracranial bleeding, as well as other severe and personal injuries, serious physical pain and mental anguish, diminished enjoyment of life, and financial expenses for hospitalization and medical care” as a direct result of taking Xarelto.
Whart Are the Risks of Xarelto?
Xarelto, an anticoagulant, was approved in 2011 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to prevent stroke and systemic embolism in those who were at high risk for blood clotting, including those who suffer from atrial fibrillation.
It was approved one year later to treat those who suffer from deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is the second most used blood thinner in the U.S. behind warfarin.
Warfarin, the industry standard for decades, is a successful blood thinner. However, patients who take warfarin often have to change their diet and be subject to close monitoring to make sure dosing is correct.
When Xarelto came on to the market, it was promoted as an easier alternative for patients without needing close monitoring and diet changes.
Unfortunately, Xarelto does not have an approved reversal agent. If a warfarin patient begins to bleed excessively including intracranial bleeding or other types of hemorrhaging, a doctor can administer Vitamin K to reverse the effects. Xarelto, on the other hand, does not have such an antidote. During the seven years that Xarelto has been on the market, patients have not had the benefit of a reversal agent that could block the drug’s effects in cases of excessive bleeding.
Many patients have died or suffered unnecessary adverse bleeding events as a result of Xarelto use. The validity of the pre-approval clinical trials associated with Xarelto have been called into question.
Additionally, plaintiffs in Xarelto cases often accuse drug makers of over-promoting Xarelto to patients, doctors and the medical community.
If you are taking Xarelto, it is suggested that you pay attention to the following symptoms in order to be aware of possible adverse bleeding events. If you experience frequent nose bleeds, heavier menstrual bleeding or vaginal bleeding, bleeding from the gums, any bleeding that is severe or cannot be stopped, coughing up blood, red or pink urine, vomiting blood or red or black stool, you should seek medical help to rule out the possibility of excessive bleeding.
This Xarelto Intracranial Bleeding Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-00756-EEF-MBN in the United States District Court of the Eastern District of Louisiana.
